I got 2016 VW Passat GTE. I do charge it as much as I can and I do about 1500-1600 km with its 50 litre tank. I do mostly up to 50-60 km a day with once a week 110-120 km ride (mostly on the highway). So pretty phenomenon for such large car if you ask me

Right now, I think PHEV is the best option for short city travel and long distance travel at the same time. After the battery technology catches up and charging network fully build up, full electric will dominate. PHEV is just a transitional design that serve its purpose.

I have a plug in hybrid, yesterday we took a long drive then stopped for a few hours. They had EV chargers there but the app wasn't working so there was no way to charge. But no problem we drove home mainly on gas like any other hybrid. If we had driven a full EV and the battery was low we would have been out of luck. Until they get they get more reliable chargers and more of them plug in seems best for us.

Outlander PHEV does all those things, 30 miles EV can charge battery from the engine, decent mpg on petrol, no gearbox the engine drives a generator, only at motorway speeds does the engine connect to the wheels mechanically

I have always thought myself a petrol head and never thought I would be anything else until I drove my son’s BMW 330e. It was so good that I went out and bought one. Performance in electric only mode up to 50 mph is brilliant. You have to drive one of these to understand what the instant torque of a electric motor feels like - brilliant. At higher speeds when the motor kicks in its very quick - similar to the Impreza WRX I once had.
I have had a wall charger fitted, and have only visited a petrol station twice in almost 2000 miles. I am getting over 99.9 miles per gallon - the computer only goes up to 99.9 mpg.
You have to try one of these BMWs, if you do I am sure you will never want a normal petrol or diesel car again.
My son has now got a BMW 530e which is even better!!

Been driving a Kia Optima PHEV estate for the last 18 months. Incredibly frugal with up to 70km pure electric range if you drive carefully. Supreme build quality. Fluid transmission system. Extremely comfortable. If you only cover medium distance every day, you never need to fill it up! Just remember, these are heavy vehicles and you will sacrifice a bit of boot space compared to non PHEV models. Our Optima’s boot is around 40 litres smaller than the normal version.

Typical What Car, putting the Prius plug-in in the ‘ones to avoid category’ without researching the facts. For the first 20,000 miles I actually achieved 234 mpg, although that required routinely plugging it in and mainly local journeys.
Despite the common misconception that many journalists go along with (largely, I suspect, as a result of their ‘churnalism’) not all plug-in’s mpg figures fall off a cliff when the battery drains. On long journeys my Prius routinely achieves 80mpg when starting with an empty battery.
Also, the handling is excellent despite the wonderful ride the 15” wheels provide. Granted, tyre noise is on the high side and space is compromised by the batteries. Toyota are masters at hybrid technology and the transition from electric motor to ICE is seamless. If the engine is noisy it’s being driven by a What Car 20-something boy racer in Power Mode!
It’s important to bear in mind that the engineers’ main brief was to produce probably the most efficient hybrid car in the world - and this they have achieved. That it drives so well is a bonus.

For those who are looking for real economy, don't have the cash for a new car, the used Volt market is good. I bought a 2017 model in April, am getting from 50 to 60 miles on electric, depending on temperature and driving conditions, and a steady 40 mpg on gasoline. Size can be an issue, it's not a big car, but for a couple it's great. If the on-board computer can be believed, the historical mileage is 178 mpg.

I feel there is an important aspect of buying a PHEV and/or a full EV that seems to be being ignored by reviewers - pretty much all of them don't have a spare tyre. Not even a space saver.
Instead you get a plug in air pump (thats what the "generous/featured 12v outlet in the boot is for) and a puncture repair kit - usually with the gunk that finds and fills holes that the tyre outlets hate and will only sell you a new tyre instead of a proper repair. And what happens if you slash the tyre sidewall or have more than a nail in the tread - your stuffed.
I'm not against electric and found this all out when I went looking at new PHEV's - particularly the Mitsubishi outlander PHEV. But I've now swapped range anxiety for puncture anxiety instead. I really wanted a PHEV because I'm sick of the high cost of fuel and the consumption of my present vehicle - I saw it as a perfect answer to my many short trips and occasional longer trips. And I need a wagon. And I liked the safety aspect of AWD. But alas, the lack of a spare tyre is a deal breaker for me.
So are reviewers being ordered not to discuss this fact by the car makers for fear of being locked out of cars to review?

My PHEV gets at least 50 miles in town. I can drive 100 miles a day and only use 1 gallon of gas.It has an electric motor which always drives the vehicle and has an onboard gasoline generator with an 8.9 gallon tank that gives it an additional 400 mile range. My car was made in 2016. My car is a 2016 Chevy Volt. Just like the EV1, GM dumped it when it had so much potential. Even the people working on the project weren’t given an explanation for it being removed from the market. The biggest difference between today’s PHEVs from the Volt is the engine/transmission design. The full time electric engine paired with a gas generator make it highly efficient. I believe GM dropped it because the Volt could easily let most daily commuters go to and from work without using any GAS at all or very little and then only use more gas when on longer road trips. This would’ve been a major hit to the oil industry, which is why most suspect the EV1 was dropped.

I have driven BMW 330e for about 1.5 years and 18000 kms. On a full tank with a full battery the car could do 600 kms if you do not cross 120kmph. Since I live in Germany and drive on the Autobahns, I would get around 350-400kms which is also pretty neat. However in other European countries for example Netherlands or Switzerland where the maximum limit is 130 kmph, this car is really very fuel efficient. In fact if you drive at 100 kmph, it can go upto 700 kms on a full tank which is just awesome.
One more thing about this car is that it charges itself back when you are driving. I always used the Sports mode on the highway to conserve energy and pure electric in the cities. Also, whenever on the highway I saw a downhill I would switch to pure electric which would actually be a free ride for a few kms.

first of all, thank you for this good listing of PHEVs, there are some I did not know.
I'm really surprised not to see the Kia Niro or Hyundai Ionic in the list.
I own one (Kia Niro PHEV) that I bought 2 years ago and I'm very happy with it. The DCT 6 speeds makes it very reactive. The 9.8kWh battery offers a steady 26 miles (USA) pure EV range.
On a long (>200 miles) road trip I stay between 50mpg and 65mpg (USA) depending on wind and ratio highway/freeway.
On a more common week composed of daily work commutes (EV) and mountain during the weekend (Hybrid + regen downhill), I end up around 100mpg (USA).

After 4 years of PHEV ownership of two, (his and hers) 2017 Chevy Gen II Volts with more than 80,000 miles combined, our real world experience of 42 - 50 mpg on gas, and 50 - 55 miles on the battery alone is our reality.
Not as big as many of the choices here, but our 4.5 year old cars van certainly compete with comparable range, mpg, and acceleration.
I would say we made an excellent choice.
I can't think of another car I would buy to replace them.
GM was stupid in their marketing and cancelled the Volt in 2019. I would buy a Chevy Equinox all day long if they would just resurrect this drivetrain.

That is true it hasn't got the biggest trunk but otherwise it is the best for relaxed driving and economy and it looks awesome.

2 Things that Bug Me: (1) All electric range is directly sensitive to outside temperature, and concomitant need to heat the cabin from the electric source. So a Mercedes A250e gets as low as 20 miles electric only when it is zero outside, and gets all of its claimed 44 miles when the temperature outside is 20C. So you would do better to reflect 'all-electric' range as a range of ranges, as it were. (2) Miles Per Gallon is a bogus economy figure when there's any electric in the mix, and your atttested mpgs tend to exclude the cost of charging with electric. So you have to sort of figure mpg for ICE only running, and KwH for electric only running. But all these cars have a pure hybrid mode as well, which increases the mpg figure with 'self' charging and regeneration. So the only fair way to compare is to figure total KwH used, by adding the KwHs you charge with, and add 43 KwH equivalent for every gallon of petrol you slosh into it. In thsis instance you're going to aggregate, though pure petrol will get you something around 1 mile per KwH , while pure electric running will give you somewhere between 2.5 and 4 KwH per mile.
The more ICE running you do, the more your average will tend towards that 1 KwH/mile figure, and the more Electric running you do the more your average will tend towards that up to 4WwH per mile figure.
Certainly the comparison within a PHEVdemonstrates that Electric running is ridiculously more efficient than ICE running, and that the best use profile for a PHEV is if your driving is weighted toward shorter trips within your electric range, and you can charge daily at home. If you do big motorway miles daily, don't even think about a PHEV.

I have the c300e hybrid and it’s fantastic, you can run 1500 km (932 mi) on a single tank of 66 liter and still have reserve fuel (about 20 liter). Great horsepower and torque 333 hp and 700 Nm and 0 to 62 mph in 5.6 s. I charge it 2 times on a day and I can run 45 km on a single charge (summer) and 30 km in winter. The A250e has same hybrid technology. Even when you battery is “empty” he will give support on accelerating the car (battery is never full empty, always keeps a bit energy to give power to save fuel consumption) when you drive good with the hybrid it can charge the battery when driving so it can drive full electric for a few kilometers. I realize now 1/3 on fuel and 2/3 on full electric drive mode. How more you can charge, how more you can enjoy the electric drive. Only the maximum charge support is 7.2 kWh, so it have 1,5 hours to charge the battery from empty to full (13.5 kWh battery). Now the newest c300e (model 2021) can drive 100 km on a single charge battery and charge maximum 11 kWh!
