The more I've used my 4x4 hi/low rear locker it engages quick and smooth now when needed. Pretty much instantly without grief. I live in Alberta, and yes, when I first got my truck, it was tricky at times to go in and out of both 4x4 and the rear locker. Now, it's literally indtant at 26,000kms. I use my 4x4 and engaged the locker at least once a month. I listened to the Car Care Nut, and he said to avoid problems, use it regularly. So, even when I didn't need it, I'd turn it all on and off 1 or 2 times a month in the alley at home or the work parking lot. It only takes a minute. Now, no issues. I had it on the trails to the west in the mountains this past weekend and instant transitions with every change. It was great!

@mattandrickadventures8416 I had to use my locker daily thw whole time I owned my 22 tacoma. Rear locker engagement was brutal and exhausting. Number 1 reason I sold it. Even the fact that I have to go into 4 low to use it was horrible
I must have had a bad unit. My 21 taco was one of the most troublesome vehicles I owned. My JL and JT got more miles put into them and zero problems. All maintained per manufacturer specs except oil change and tire rotation intervals which I do at 5k with synthetic amsoil

I actually took my truck in on one of my few days off because I thought it was broken because it makes a grinding noise and shakes the truck. I tried asking them over the phone but they acted like they had no idea what I was talking about. So after burning an evening at Toyota they told me it was totally normal and was designed that way. Multiple posts have been made about this but after paying a fortune for the truck I had to be sure. However I will say my needs are different than yours as I just needed a reliable truck. @385nol1 yep if I didn't need a truck to do what I do daily in the swamps I'd still have my tacoma. But being in and out of 4 low and engaging locker 6 to 10 times a day in the tacoma was brutal for me. Really the 4 wheel drive system is the main reason I sold it.

Please help deciding. This is my issue. Thinking of getting a 3rd gen taco. But the cons are bothering me like the space. Considering a full size truck like tundra v8 crew cab or f150 v8, im not gonna tow anyting but i chose the v8 for simplicity.
I don’t consider myself a “hater” on the disposable/throwaway 4th gen Toyota Tacoma but a “realist” on how cheap and hastily designed platform it is. @@efil4kizum Yes, I noticed that when I switched from my 1996 1st gen Tacoma; arguably the best gen😳, to the current 3rd gen I have now. Was shaking my head at how much cheap plastic was installed on the truck and now the 4th gen is even crapier than the 3rd gen.
@@deantrainr they did much improvement to road wind engine noise on the gen2 ... I can push that gen2 4cyl AT up to 90mph and I hear no engine or trans noise whatsoever... The v6 with MT on my gen1 screams at those speeds lol
I have worked as a painters helper where I retired from and I found out that paint is very picky. Someone who is wearing too much cologne or perfume can have a big impact on it.
Close to 30 years ago I read an article in an auto manufacturing magazine describing paint issues Dodge/Chrysler was having. They were getting fish-eye imperfections in the paint of newly sprayed cars and trucks. They traced it down to an issue caused by a deodorant that some if the paint line employees were wearing.
@@bruinruin591 Very true and it can take along time to find out what the problem is. We had some rubberized roll up doors in the big paint booths that did the same thing until they got enough over spray on them to cover them.
Why don't any mid size truck manufacturers put storage in the floor like ram? I also really like the ram box that they got from Chevy avalanche, but ram improved on it. Honda came up with some good storage ideas.
My family has been driving Toyota’s since the early 80’s quite a few of our vehicles managed to reach 500k plus miles including several 4Runners and early Tacoma of the early 90’s. Moving forward, when I bought my 2022 Tacoma SR 5 2WD , right on the dealer lot, brand new and it sounded like it needed a valve job. I thought, it hasn’t been broken in yet cause at the time it had barely 7 miles on the odometer. Today at 25kmiles it still sounds the same. Does anyone know about this? Or is this common? Cause Toyota went from 5w-30 to now 0W-20 I figured light weight oil would do this but not sure…
The valve noise that sounds like a diesel is the direct injection. Has regular injection and direct.Direct is very high pressure. Eight thousand pounds, or something close to that.
My 2020 TRD sport does this as well. As stated from others. Normal. It's our little diesel sounding 3.5 Atkinson cycle engine. One of the noisiest engines I've ever owned. It will cycle on and off at idle. With the DI/Port Injection system it will keep your valves clean. No need for walnut blasting at 100K. I'll live with the noise.
I feel like you could have fixed a lot of these issues with an aftermarket lift kit and a cab mount trim. I look at the Tacoma as more of a starting point and not a turn key off-road ready vehicle.
I really wanted to love my 22 Tacoma TRD Off-road. I did the factory TRD 2 inch lift installed by the dealer and one size bigger BFG 265’s. After 25K thousand miles I had to sell it. The seating position was terrible causing poor visibility. The engine was weak and the transmission was an absolute disaster. Surprisingly NOT capable off road over the rocks in AZ and almost useless in the hills of Moab. The paint quality was terrible and so was the connectivity from the infotainment system to my cell phone. I could go on and on, but ultimately had to make a decision and get rid of it. Best thing I ever did….
To have a decent viewing angle, you have to have the seat to max height. But everyone these days wants the seat as back and low as possible. Just not an option with this truck.
The price of the 3rd gen went up after the 4th gen The 5 gen 4unner prices will go up also!!! I’m keeping my 2022 trd off-road access cab with 5900 miles for a good long time.
I’ll never understand why people feel the seating position is like a car. My 23’ OR is definitely a truck compared to my 19’ Jetta and even my wife’s Honda passport.

I was a Toyota fan for more than 20 years and owned Tacoma and Tundra until this year. My 2007 Tundra SR5 access cab was still running well but now that I am 75 years old I wanted more safety such as lane assist etc. I also wanted a truck my Wife would be comfortable driving and the Tundra was too big for her. I drove all the mid-size trucks including the Frontier and it was OK but the steering was very heavy and it didn't "wow" us at all. I bought a Honda Ridgeline Black Edition because my Wife and I did get the "wow" we wanted with safety and comfort. We don't really need a truck’s truck at our age. I never thought I would want a mid-size and definitely a Honda Ridgeline but perspectives change as you get older.
Congrats on your new Ridgeline! and for a truck thats used like a Ridgeline is, there is nothing better. More room, great reliability, awesome tailgate, great bed storage, and excellent ride
I agree with all points you made here. I had 2 TRD sports from the 3rd gen. I heard later in the gen that the auto trans was better. I had a 17 and hated the trans. I traded for a 6sp manual. Way better with that. I loved those trucks though. I have to agree with both lists except one thing. Maybe it was the area you were in. My experience i made money on my tacoma during covid. My first tacoma i had 2k negative on it from my WRX. And still made 2k on the tacoma with trade it. A total of 4k since it covered that neg and i gained. Again, it could have been the area too. I know all the toyota dealerships here in NE ohio were really hurting for some tacomas. From my previous comments in your other videos, you may know I went with a 24 pro4x. I plan to keep that until it dies. Over all it looks and rides better than the 3rd or 4th gen tacoma. And it has a auto locking tailgate 😂 lol i like that feature too.
@MsAce0424 great info. And love the pro4x! Yep that locking tailgate not being on the tscoma really pissed me off. I was swearing the whole time I had to install it saying how stupid it was that a trd off road team doesn't have that.
I had a 2016 3rd gen Tacoma -- it has been a cesspool of "reliability and durability" myth. It had $17,000 worth of extended warranty claims: front LCA, PCV, clutch pedal/master/tubes, whole new manual transmission, front timing cover leak, valve cover leak, accumulator leak, steering rack, TPMS. And the front diff was about to go after warranty expired, so it's gone! All that was only 8 years old and 80k miles. The last two visits at the shop it stayed there for one month, and two weeks each. Parts backordered, trans were two weeks out, steering rack was one week out. Yes, I do tow trailer for my track-day car, but it's within GCWR and GVWR. I like the truck, but it definitely turned me away from Toyota for the foreseeable future. Bought the Taco for 32k in 2016, traded in for 24k. Got myself a 2024 Colorado WT instead -- only 34k net purchase price, down from 37k sticker.
Been doing this exact same thing with ford, jeep, and ram for last decade and always made money on every one of them. In the last 9 new trucks this toyota is the only one that cost me money. This tacoma was the worst vehicle purchase financially I've made in a long time

And the 4wd is a pita to get the locker to engage. But it's more than that. It's the ENTIRE truck. It says off-road but this isn't meant for off-road . No way. You know the gm problem they'd take them through the car wash and the roof would cave in ? It's like that. These aren't meant for off-road. You'll just trash your truck. That's all you'll accomplish is you'll trash your truck. Unless you in open field then (maybe) you be okay. Anything brush, around it, over it will trash it. Anything under it will trash it. It's not like the old trucks. Weak. It's very weak. Weak paint. Weak plastic, weak panels . Fragile. It's literally fragile. Around here it's hunting logging camping stuff. Tote roads. Sorta overgrown old roads. Kinda trailish. Logging roads. Been doing this years. I've taken it down a couple easier wider ones? Did great. But generally most of them a big NO. This isn't the short box Chevy I used to run around. Definitely not the old GMC. It come back missing pieces. And you wouldn't be buffing scratches out they go through every layer. It's that bad. People say they off-road . I don't even know what they talking about? This thing didn't even make it past my rhododendron bush. The new 24 Tacoma seems no better . There are seat jackers available that give you an inch or 2 more lift to the seat for better seating and view , super easy install
I am really glad I got a 3rd gen. If I was in the market for a mid size now, I probably would not get any midsize. I’d just go to a full size.
Full size offers more room for sure
I have a 22 TRD sport and I get over 30 mpg. I really like alot of the improvements on the 24 but right now they are starting to have too many problems. I figured that if the older models are good enough for alkida and the taliban, it's good enough for me.

Please help deciding. This is my issue. Thinking of getting a 3rd gen taco. But the cons are bothering me like the space. Considering a full size truck like tundra v8 crew cab or f150 v8, im not gonna tow anyting but i chose the v8 for simplicity.
All great trucks. But the tundra stands out as the reliably champ and offers the room you want and the quality. My 2 cents.

I don’t consider myself a “hater” on the disposable/throwaway 4th gen Toyota Tacoma but a “realist” on how cheap and hastily designed platform it is.

All fantastic storage set ups. And agree manufacturers could find ways to implement these if they wanted to and it would be a huge benefit

@@chrislewis6606 ah got it! Makes sense cause all Toyotas now have both PFI and DI thank you…
Atkinson cycle engine. They are just noisy/ticky. I've got a 2019 TRD OR with 168k. Havent had a single engine issue.
@@KayBertoss this is the last breed of the good Toyotas.. hang on to it.
I feel like you could have fixed a lot of these issues with an aftermarket lift kit and a cab mount trim. I look at the Tacoma as more of a starting point and not a turn key off-road ready vehicle.
@ZOMGscubasteve maybe . But as a high mile driver that drives 40k miles a year doing a lift on a tacoma is not a good idea.
Looking at seat covers…
RC neoprene covers really good for summer heat and humidity?
I guess not different than fake leather seat covers.

I bought my 2015 Tacoma used for $27K in 2021 got into accident and the truck was totaled. Insurance paid me $34.7K for it. I’m totally impressed!

It seems weird to dwell on the reliability of a truck you only took to 60k miles. Pretty much any rig you buy new is going to be trouble free for 60k.

@@westcoastplinkin6559 I literally put a scratch on mine from a piece of a rhododendron bush sticking out. Backing a trailer through cuts close with the bushes.. Done this for years. Many vehicles.. Never had a deep scratch from it. It went through every layer paint right down to the metal. Never seen such a thing. Been backing my cars and trucks through for years. Occasionally clip the bushes. No big deal. It wasn't even off road. It was in my yard for heavens sake. The front grill and bumper move . I can move them with my hand. Cheap plastic. This truck isn't made like our old trucks where we just go through the tote roads rub "whatever". Metal bumpers. This truck ain't that. The scratch went through all the layers. From just a bush . And the truck would probably fall apart In pieces off road . Pieces falling off. . Leaving a trail of little pieces of cheap metal and cheap plastic behind. Suppose it be like bread crumbs if you were lost. Find your way back out following the truck crumb trail .
Like he mentioned the y pipe and stuff hanging down under it a issue.
