Good video, as usual Tim. I hate these "Ipad bolted to a dashboard" looking infotainments now. I hate the look, and for some reason just find the bare unit distracting, even when it's turned off. It's never going to be redeemed without fan control knobs either. I think mk7.5 was absolute peak dashboard design in looks and useability.
@ Though the scrolling animation on the Mk7 trip computer between functions was the start of the slippery slope of superfluous nonsense and the cheaper door cards in the rear were a sign of things to come.
Just had my new Golf estate 1.5 Life delivered. Just the base model and I love it. The screen is great, very easy to use. Not distracting at all. The 1.5 manual 115ps is fine for me. Surprisingly quick and fine for me around our country lanes.
In a £40k Golf I expect near perfection. This is a commodity car personified and therefore deserves no premium over any other commodity car that just gets people from A to B.
Tim, I've got the new Tiguan (for my sins) and it has the same 1.5 with mild hybrid. The brake pedal is just the same but I've found that if I change the regen setting to Low instead of auto, the brake pedal is more consistent
Drove the new golf and Honda hrv the same week and same price, crazy big difference, golf so smooth, pleasant ride, Honda felt trapped inside and that whining transmission got me nuts.
I'm sure it's a decent car but it isn't desirable anymore, it's just a generic small family car now. The hot versions are just too expensive for the badge.
Perhaps they have calibrated the braking to first bring in some regen using the MHEV system - via the beefed up 48V starter motor/alternator? I dont know this, I just thought that up. It's something they might have done given the hardware they have on an eTSI, to extract maximum efficiency.
It won't sell because it is neither Arthur nor Martha - those who actually want a load lugger and care about image will still buy an A4 Avant or a 3 Series Touring instead and those who purely want the practicality of an estate will just buy the cheaper/bigger Octavia (and not give a fig about the badge etc). This falls between the two stools - and Golfs no longer carry the cache they once did - hence you will see very few of them I suspect.
Interior looks so cheap. They improved the ergonomics slightly but they were so horrible that they are still poor. I see zero reason to buy this over superior competitors
Hey Tim? Can you do the Ford focus Active? I think its right up your street. Great for people who live in the country and want a practical car but dont see the need in an estate. Plus they want to stop selling them next year 😢
I ordered a Golf Estate 1.5 Style Auto, the peak of sensible back in 2021. After waiting 8 months, the dealer presented me with a hatch, not the estate!!! They kindly said they would try to order the correct car but it would take 9-12 months!!! No apology or offer to make up for the #### up.
9:26 You asked earlier in the video why anyone would buy a Passat over a Golf Estate; well there's your reason. Cars like the Passat and Superb compete to an extent with higher end cars like the Audi A4 and A6 and as such have better soundproofing and refinement.
500 miles to a tank, this is why I miss my Leon ST, Kia proceed 1.5, on 300 miles and it says I have 90 left (won't be lucky to get another 50) why is it so bad, says short term is similar mpg to Leon, wish I could reject it back (lease) get one of these or Octavia or even another Leon!
I have to say I would pay to get rid of that ugly central screen. Don't get me wrong, I know it is needed but that thing being big and on top of the dashboard seems like you just glued a cheap tablet in there. Next time, make it smaller, lower and integrated, like in the golf mk7. About the brake pedal, I feel exactly the same on my B4 Passat. Is this a VW thing?
I have the 8.0 and honestly, you get used to the haptic buttons. I really don't mind the steering wheel buttons and I'm hearing the same from people that own one. The classic buttons in the 8.5 look cheaper. I get that a press drive is too short to get used to them. Glad to see they fixed the backlight of volume and temp controls though. Those are annoying on the 8.0 and near impossible to find in the dark. I think the brake pedal sponginess depends slightly on what mode you're in. You get more assists in comfort than in sport.
Crashing VW software has been an issue for years. I had a 2019 Rline Passat - the car was a mess. NOTHING worked on the infotainment. VW eventually took it back. The sat nav was hilarious - I would put an address in (if it worked) and it would instantly lock up, emit a high pitched scream through the stereo and then reset itself only to repeat the cycle. Awful. And don’t get me started on the disgrace of an engine that is the 1.5 tsi. Slow, thrashy and boring.
I suppose because the Golf has better performance, ride, handling, plus better economy. So for those that value driving dynamics and money, it’s possibly the better choice. . I think we know SUV owners prioritise none of those things, so both vehicles still exist 🤓
Smaller in what way exactly? I'm pretty sure that apart from headroom you're wrong there. I would love to know how people are still being brainwashed to think that SUV's are in any way better practically or dynamically than a traditional estate.
I'm not sure what that vehicle is supposed to be, but it is not a Golf. Golfs are supposed to be stylish, sporty, have loud, slightly obnoxious exhaust, and when riding in one, be able to feel the road while taking a sharp corner. That vehicle is a flaccid flobberworm lacking any form of style or excitement. Don't get me started on the lack of knobs. It is like watching King Charles give a speech, although there may be a knob present in the speech, depending on your opinion of the Monarchy.

As above but preferred the MK 7 with the hard keys each side of the screen.

Yay buttons are back.
At times, when in a lazy mood, a boring easy relaxful car is perfect

Great video!
best car to be anonymous..not bringing attention at all
They've finally managed to make the new Golf nearly as good as it was 10 years ago
I wish we had the golf wagon in the US. I think they look great
No not for me, the 7.5 was the high water mark, also really dislike these massive screens
I would still have one. It's a bit of a classic and the new plugin hybrid is a game changer

Overpriced and boring.

Any CarPlay glitches?
No I’ve not had any on the big 13” VWG screen yet, and I’ve done lots of miles in cars with it this year…
It is over priced and boring and VW build and reliability is nothing to write home about either. There are better cars out there.
Even the new Tiguan has spongy brakes, which is disconcerting.

Bit of a jelly mould body design Tim and I suspect, overpriced :)
Just terrible when compared with the mk 7 & 7.5.
However the wagon no longer on sale on Australia!

Oh dear, oh dear and oh dear. I'll keep my MK7 Golf thank you very much until such time that VW make decent interiors again therefore probably never.
yh i agree
mk6 and mk7 great interiors i feel like mk7 has anything you would really want anyway these mk8 golfs are meant to be very safe whch is good ig
unfortunatey the PHEV does not appear to come in estate version, which is a shame.
Octavia is not 10cm longer, it's 6.7cm longer.
I shall do better
I’m not sure Paula Hamilton would like this one?

The main problem with the Golf Estate is that it is 3 inches longer than a Tiguan, yet it is smaller on the inside. I just don't see the point of it.
