    I have 8 years in aviation. The information this guy is telling you is great. Minus anything he has to say about being an actual mechanic. If you fail as an aircraft mechanic, and a lot of people do. Use the tools you have already learned, and use them to your benefit. There's plenty of fields in aviation, and the more experience you have in the technical field. Will make you that much more sellable.

Wages are rising in many places for aircraft mechanics, but South Florida companies are not paying more. Many airlines are hiring right now because many old mechanics decided to retire during lockdown. This is where you want to go.

With the volatility of the airline industry, its about staying employed full time. While the current job market is good for pilots, having the A&P is a good fallback for furloughs and for FOs needing more income. I experienced this many times with pilots. Good Video! For those that fall short of those standards there is another great option in a part 147 school choice, The Aviation Institute of Maintenance schools (AIM) offer a capstone review course at the end of your program to get you ready for your certification tests. This review program, like the early Os and Ps approach offers the student an advantage is passing those exams. I just wanted to make viewers aware of another great option.

    32 year retired airline A&P here. I started in the Navy and took classes in my off time when I could. Finished on my A&P the month after I separated, went to work defense contract no A&P required. Then worked in a defense contract where it was required and got a pay bump for it. From there I went to a commuter/regional, then air freight, then major airline. Be prepared to work many YEARS of third shift, you will experience fatigue and exhaustion daily. If you work line maintenance it will more than likely be out in the elements, hangar is better as it never rains or snows in a hangar. It is an extremely dangerous business and I have seen people killed and maimed for life, you need to keep your head on a swivel and always be aware of your surroundings. There are also many dangerous chemicals (hydraulic fluid, lavatory, etc) you will work with take all precautions using them. You aren't a real A&P until you have gotten sky kill in your eyes, and had your arm in a dirty lavatory tank up to your shoulder. This business has mandatory drug & alcohol testing you will never know when it is coming, unless you are involved in an incident then you will likely be tested. In most cases when you report to work you will be told to go to the office & handed a piece of paper and told to go to the testing office. Hope this information helps, FLY NAVY!!!

    I do upholstery work for all my GA clients as well. I can charge a premium because it can be difficult to find a good upholstery shop, then get one with fire retardant materials on hand. I work for UPS and have my own shop at Bowman Field. I get tons of contract work with whatever price I want to charge on all the jets coming in for the Kentucky Derby. I've been fortunate and motivated enough to work on tons of aircraft types. Majority of my co-workers are old, and UPS pretty much has all the turbine AMTs until you get up to CVG with the regionals. This was my hometown, and cost of living is low. I got to be surrounded by family as my wife and I built our own.
    Always plan for your future, and make sure to take tax liabilities into consideration when thinking about a move or comparing offers.

It’s really not something easy, I went in very mechanically inclined and thought this will be easy but in reality it’s not. As long you y’all are okay with lots of regulations to follow, lots of paper work that has to be 100% perfect and a true passion for aviation then by all means do it!

Higher quality ratchets are great to have, sometimes snapon includes a socket set with a ratchet and that deal is hella worth it. Keep a varied selection of impact/chrome extensions. Alex, upon reviewing 65.83 recent flight experience
    A certificated mechanic may not exercise the privileges of his certificate and rating unless, within the preceding 24 months-
    (a) The Administrator has found that he is able to do that work; or
    (b) He has, for at least 6 months-
    (1) Served as a mechanic under his certificate and rating;
    (2) Technically supervised other mechanics;
    (3) Supervised, in an executive capacity, the maintenance or alteration of aircraft; or
    (4) Been engaged in any combination of paragraph (b) (1), (2), or (3) of this section.
    With a full time airline job, it seems that your A&P certificate would expire. A commitment to 6 months of consecutive work out of 24 months is a lot for someone wanting to fly primarily as their career.

    Thanks for the information and for posting this video Alex. I'm 46 and was laid off back in March due to the pandemic. I'm on a waiting list to start A&P School at a local junior college right near LAX. I never thought about becoming an aircraft broker 2-3 years after being in the industry but I love that suggestion and will pursue that lane. I also read the comments below and saw your suggestion about specializing in avionics. Thanks again for all of the great tips. Hoping my age won't be a huge deterrent in landing my first job. Are you aware of any age discrimination going on in the industry? Thanks again!

I’m very happy for you, in regards to the age I never seen any discrimination, they main thing the employers is going to be looking for is your willingness to work hard and openness to LEARN, I’ve mainly worked with people that are 40+ so I don’t think you will have a problem. My feedback on your points:
    1. Absolutely, take your O&Ps as early as you can.
    2. Take advantage of Snap-on's discount for the basics, but do not go buy a new box from them. I promise noone with experience gives 2 shits what brand tool box you use.
    3. No, dont bother. Go work for a dumpy MRO and learn the basics there. You will make far more and get experience on a large array of airframes quickly.
    4. No experience with brokering so cant say.
    5. Not just charter companies but various other types of operators, such as aerial fire fighting and agriculture in general prefer A&P holding pilots.

Your quality of education will be better, you student loan with be 1/5th of what riddle would charges and at the end of the day absolutely noone cares where you got it. The point is you have it.

    I am about to apply to an aviation institute of maintenance school. I got an associates degree in Graphic Design and went on to pursue my Bachelors' in motion graphics/visual efx. It sounded cool at the time when I got out of the military, however, I researched the art design/film industry as a whole and went to several info panels at my school. realized that it was not a good secure career option for me, so I did not finish. From that point on, I have been in career purgatory ever since. A wife and 2 kids later, I was thinking about going back to college and thought a trade would be a smarter route at this stage in my life. I wanted to maybe be HVAC or electrician and then I thought about avionics. I got introduced to an admissions rep for AIM and took a campus tour. My childhood interest in planes came back to me when my toddler son grabbed to reach a piston propellar plane. I want to get into avionics, and I think completing the AMT 21 month program is a good bet to get my foot in the door with aircraft maintenance. both AMT and avionics technicians require the FAA and A&P license to get a job. why not go with the shorter school program. thoughts anyone?

    Excellent information on the doing the oral as you go. I've been a licensed pilot for several decades now and tried to get an A&P certificate a couple of decades ago. Because of the tight time requirements of the school I didn't finish due to work schedule conflicts. My present boss (same job) now has given me the greenlight with an option to flex my schedule to finish my A&P training.
    The oral exam idea is an excellent one that I'll incorporate on my own if not provided.

      serious question. I had actually planned to do something similar but reversed. Go to work in the tech field and while doing that get my flight license. From your time in the field would you think this to be a viable route?

    • @muhammadsteinberg
      @muhammadsteinberg 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @loganatkins1171 Getting your private pilot certificate shouldn't be that hard. Most local flying schools/clubs let you set your own schedule. The problem would be getting on the schedule if the school is popular. If possible, try to schedule as many dates in advance as possible if possible. 40yrs ago when I 1st started flying, scheduling wasn't an issue. Rental fees (wet) was $14 for a cessna 150/152, $28. I ended up finishing with a private instructor (retired C-130 pilot).
      Flight training schedules are very flexible. A&P instruction is very different. The FAA regulates flight schools. It gives the student pilot a lot of flexibility.
      When it comes to A&P instruction, the FAA regulates the school and regulates the hours a student must be in class. A&P schools and students are held to a stricter standard.
      Hope that answers your question.
      I already work in the aviation industry, but need the A&P to move to another department. 75% done before I had to exit program, ironically due to my aviation job.

    Unfortunately, getting an internship does have its caveats. If you’re still an active student then you can’t just pick up and go to another city or state for an internship. That may have to wait until after school, but that’s really when you need to start bringing in income so you can pay off those student loans. That really will be a matter of luck for a student who can’t move during school, considering you still need to attend classes.

    I don't understand this statement "when it comes time to sell your tools"? I have been a mechanic for 51 years and started buying tools before I was 13. I never once considered my tools as an investment to cash in on but an investment to create an income. Sure, the $100 plus thousand dollars I have probably spent in my life would bring about $20 thousand now to cash in on them. Tools aren't the stock market besides if you decide to do something else for a living the tools you have can come in handy for hobbies or home repairs.
    I have just one question, When you buy a couch, chair or stove, are you worried about it's resale value if you decide to sell it? Didn't think so and they don't help you earn an income.

    Pretty good advice except the tool advice. Buy the tools you can afford. In fact, start with cheap tools. Do not go into debt to have the high priced tools. Debt is dumb, cash is king. I used all Snap On in the military and then got out and bought cheap tools. You won't know the difference until you look at the brand stamped on the tool. Also, follow this rule; once you have borrowed a tool 3 times from someone, buy your own. Don't be the guy constantly borrowing your coworkers tools. Be a professional. Good luck everyone! There is definitely some good information here, but at the same time, there is some not so good information. First of all, tools aren't that important. For certain calibrated tools such as micrometers, calipers, torque wrenches, etc, its good to get high quality, but most of the mechanics I know in the airlines as well as myself use a lot of husky tools. If they work, then why do something else. Secondly, it is true that in the airlines, having both your pilots license and A&P is not that useful, however in GA, it can definitely be helpful, especially as you get more experience, you may be the one test flying the aircraft if needed. Lastly, I wouldn't actually recommend going straight into the majors. It can be much more overwhelming and they will be a lot more strict. Not saying that it's necessarily a bad idea, but it would be nice to get some experience in the smaller regional.

    This is about 25% of what you need to know. The real thing you need is relationships in aviation. Without knowing people youll be an underpaid slave. I wasted some time interviewing with a big airline. I had experience manufacturing all sorts of aviation parts and spent time at a repair station for bearings. I knew all the FARs and paperwork, but the people interviewing didnt care. They only wanted to know who I knew. It was a monumental waste of time. The person that begged me to interview with that company kept calling me begging more. It made me leave the aviation industry altogether which I am glad I did, since the entire thing is a clownshow. I switched back to making tools, where I make 3x what I would have at "we let our wheels fall off airlines". Ironically, I set delivery and pricing of tooling to multiple aviation companies where it's important to know me, not the other way around. Aviation is a rigged game. I highly highly recommend anything else unless you have inside people.

      FORGET AIM, they are crooks and have lousy programs, go for a local community college or tech school, some cost as little as $6,000 for the total program
      DON'T go to AIM and get RIPPED OFF, their graduation % is very low

    I graduated in 94 couldn't find a job with the airlines just general aviation which paid very poorly. Ultimately stayed a bricklayer. Stay away from the tool truck period many of my classmates fell for that. They are a rip-off. I don't remember the testing or oral and practicle being that hard

    I finished my a&p school 2 years ago and still studying for my tests. I have finished the General and airframe written now practicing for the orals and practicals. So much studying, I hate it. And re learning stuff I forgot is crap too. My family keeps asking why it’s taking so long? When I try to explain, they have no interest in it. Any tips to help me along?

    What tests you can take when is dependent on what wavers your school has. For example I can take the General after I’m done with the general section of my school. Because they have a waver. But I can’t take the airframe or power plant until I’ve completed both. Has nothing to do with GPA. That’s just his school. And in regards to this apprenticeship shit, that’s just being an ASM. Which you don’t have to have an A&P for. You’re paying for the required hours being logged when going to school people, not the teaching. The teaching isn’t shit. They give you the material. It’s up to you

    As long as I study I’ll be okay ? I’ve never had a mechanical mind but stronger in other fields like math. I’ve been working dead end jobs my whole life, I’m 25 years old now and I’m trying to find a better route for myself. I’m going to take out loans and it’s going to be a pain in the ass but I hope with good work ethic and commitment I’ll get through it. I’m honestly terrified because if I fail I’ll be in debt with nothing to show for it. Do you think you have to be mechanically inclined to progress in the aviation field? I’m interested in the maintenance side of things or even the manufacturing of parts

    My school told us as of about year ago, maybe a little less, that the faa no longer allows us to take our written, orals, and practicals til we’re completely done with our program, even though we’re done with the airframe portion of the program within 3 semesters

    Yup, pick one. A&P OR Pilot. I have three, heli pilot, FW pilot and A&P. You won' make more money having more. Pick one, stay focused and get hours, doing that, get into airlines thats how you make money in aviation. I spread myself too thin and I've burned out and left aviation entirely.

    Hey there. I’m older, no education, a land machine mechanic, and have about 10 hours of flight time under a cfi. I already know becoming a pilot is the goal, but how can I pay for the training? Is doing the ppl first the right route? It’s very expensive
    Or do you have any suggestions?
    I’m using a ground school, have all my books, iPad, nav apps, ground school paid, sea legs are getting stronger, just keep hitting gaps in between training sessions due to financial reasons.
    Please let me know if you know any way to help I would really to gain some fluid momentum here

      AIM is a great school. My son is going there. Expensive, but they get direct hires at regionals and majors.
