- Arguably the most bizarre episode ever hosted in Tom Bergeron's tenure hosting Hollywood Squares, returning champion David defends his title against Valerie in an episode that features 9 consecutive incorrect guesses, with 6 of them on celebrity Gilbert Gottfried, who, along with Penn & Teller, frequently shout "You Fool!" after many of the incorrect guesses. It's the only Bergeron-hosted episode that lasted precisely one round, and thus did not make it to a Secret Square game.
RIP Gilbert Gottfried. One of the best game show episodes of all time.

You can HEAR Penn yelling "you stole that from me!" about midway through but he doesn't even sound like he minds. Like he saw what Gilbert was doing with it was epic and just wanted to rib him.

The great thing about this episode is that Gilbert sells the bluffs as honest answers and vice versa. That’s the key to being a great square.

Gilbert's last TV appearance before his death was on the Masked Singer, where he gave support to the Hydra. Who were unmasked to reveal Penn and Teller, seen here next to him and starting the whole "YOU FOOL!" joke that he escalated so beautifully.
(This episode also has Jason Alexander, who was the first to break the news of Gilbert's death on Twitter. Huh.)

So the reason this worked as well as it did was because GG gave *plausible* wrong answers.
And implausible-sounding correct answers.
They all give wrong answers. Been that way since the show began

One thing that helped was that the celebs were given the subjects of the questions to be asked and possible bluff answers before the show, though they were not told the actual questions, those they heard for the first time during the actual show taping.

I've never seen Tom Bergeron so lively. He loved this episode, especially Penn & Teller and Gilbert Gottfried.

I'm submitting this comment in the wake of hearing about the unexpected passing of Gilbert Gottfried. This is a legendary episode and it was always fun to watch Gilbert Gottfried in this show! I first heard about him, as many of my peers did, from Aladdin and if I'm not mistaken this was the first time I saw him onscreen when I grew up watching it as a 9- or 10-year-old. RIP Gilbert Gottfried
