  • Led Zeppelin's 1977 North American Tour was the eleventh and final concert tour of North America by the English rock band. The tour was divided into three legs, with performances commencing on 1 April and concluding on 24 July 1977. The tour was originally intended to finish on 13 August, but was cut short following the death of vocalist Robert Plant's son. t least three indoor concerts from this tour (at Pontiac on 30 April, Houston on 21 May and Seattle on 17 July) were professionally filmed by the TV International company for the band and projected live on to a giant video screen.[4] None of these performances have been officially released, and to date, only the Seattle video has been made available on unofficial Led Zeppelin bootleg recordings. When reviewing material for the Led Zeppelin DVD in 2003, some 1977 footage was considered, but ultimately only a small clip of Bonham's drumming from the Seattle show is shown during the DVD credits.
    The basic set list for the tour was:
    "The Song Remains the Same" (Page, Plant)
    "The Rover" (intro)/"Sick Again" (Page, Plant)
    "Nobody's Fault but Mine (Page, Plant)
    "In My Time of Dying" (Page, Plant, Bonham, Jones) or "Over the Hills and Far Away" (Page, Plant)*
    "Since I've Been Loving You" (Page, Plant, Jones)
    "No Quarter" (Page, Plant, Jones)
    "Ten Years Gone" (Page, Plant)
    "The Battle of Evermore" (Page, Plant) (With John Paul Jones on vocals, singing Sandy Denny's parts from the studio version.)
    "Going to California" (Page, Plant)
    "Dancing Days" (Page, Plant) (on 26th May and 27th June only)
    "Black Country Woman" (Page, Plant) / "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp" (Page, Plant, Jones)
    "White Summer"/"Black Mountain Side" (Page)
    "Kashmir" (Bonham, Page, Plant)
    "Out on the Tiles" (intro)/"Over the Top"/"Moby Dick" (Page, Jones, Bonham)
    "Guitar Solo" (Page) / "Star Spangled Banner"
    "Achilles Last Stand" (Page, Plant)
    "Stairway to Heaven" (Page, Plant)
    Encores typical of the first leg of the tour:
    "Rock and Roll" (Page, Plant, Jones, Bonham)
    "Trampled Under Foot" (Page, Plant, Jones)
    Encores typical of the second and third leg:
    "Whole Lotta Love" (Introduction) (Bonham, Dixon, Jones, Page, Plant)
    "Rock and Roll" (Page, Plant, Jones, Bonham)
    Other encores played occasionally:
    "Heartbreaker" (Bonham, Page, Plant)
    "Black Dog" (Page, Plant, Jones)
    "It'll Be Me" (Clement)
    "Communication Breakdown" (Bonham, Jones, Page)

    Jimmy Page has played many, many different variations of his lead in Stairway to Heaven over the years. To me this one (that he played during the 1977 tour), as well as his back and forth groove here with Bonham (along with Jones providing the melodic backing on his keyboards) , is his finest. Page was born with a feel for this music, changing up and improvising during songs in tour after tour and night after night throughout the Zeppelin years.

      That's what set Zeppelin apart from the rest. I think the next closest band to their live performance was Deep Purple from the early 70's when it came to creative live performances, To expand songs Zeppelin never went along with the almost painful "sing-alongs" that some did or like the Stones, just extended songs with simple guitar licks.

      +Hodnisguitar We are a different kind of special. Really? Like millions and millions of others (including the president of the USA) who can recognize and compliment the fantastic musical abilities of Jimmy Page. Page writes and plays the type of songs and guitar leads that guitar players have been trying to emulate for decades. You are the green eyed kind of person who laments over Jimmy Page's worldwide recognition as being a great guitarist. A legend in Rock music. You are simply a jealous fool.

      +Hodnisguitar You are right! I am a guitarist. I have seen and heard several live versions of Stairway tonight on TH-cam for the first time and I am Very disappointed! I expected Jimmy to play pretty close to the original recording. I assumed he was a much better guitarist.

    • @obhmusic
      @obhmusic 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MICHAEL DAVIS he was and is a great musician..setting the standard for so many bands! but I find his lack of respect for his fans to be inexcusable.. taking drugs before playing live, and playing bad because of it, its just wrong.

      It is beautiful

    • @zoso1980
      @zoso1980 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In all Plant's dissing of the song, which I know he feels is the voice of his younger less sophisticed self coupled with the resentment of the large shadow the song casts. There is much beauty here and all that is lost with his emotional reaction to it. I've always felt this was Jimmy's piece. The solo is the centerpiece and Jimmy puts the words he would or could never say into his solo. It's an emotional tour de force live - JIMMY's emotional tour de force.
      One of the ARMS show from 1983 (I think London? where he almost whacks Clapton with the doubleneck), his solo is wounded, it's something to behold.

    • @Sean-if7rp
      @Sean-if7rp 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stephanie Sandlin His solo conveys Jimmy's emotions and what he is going through at that point in life, the ARMS solo shows a damaged drug reliant alcoholic and and if you really listen to them all you can feel what they mean, Jimmy's solo is sometimes all I fast forward to hear and Robert knows his singing is not the very important part so he dislikes it

      Seattle 7/17/1973 was possibly their best show of the '73 U.S. Tour, as well as Seattle 3/21/1975 was possibly their best show from the '75 U.S. Tour. Seattle and Vancouver were two of their favorite spots to perform! I think the reason why they didn't go to Vancouver in '77 was likely to do with getting stuff across the border.. But their last U.S. show was actually in Oakland. After Seattle, they went to Tempe AZ. then played two shows in Oakland on 7/23 and 7/24.

    Don't call it a solo, Bonzo added so much to it, and those keyboards were a nice touch too.

      +Ryan Wittert When I first discover led zeppelin I thought that the solos in 1977 were bad, I was wrong too, if you listen carefully this a brillant one and there are many others in 1977 .

    MSG may have been edited, but if you look up all the edits for each song on that set, you will find that Stairway to heaven uses one complete solo. the only fixes were a couple of minor notes and really would not have maken much difference. That being said i often wish they had entire songs instead of piecing the performances together.

    At worst this my 4th favorite version of by far most favorite song. MSG Song Remains the Same 1, Earls Ct 2, St Valentines Day 1975 LI Colosseum 3 (from 22nd row :-) This version is really as sensational of other 3.

    jimmy was so thin by this time, his lead got lost and he began improvising but the rhythms are amazing during the vocals and bridges, his phrasing with the 12 string is gorgeous, it's really hard to play lead guitar with that big albatross hanging around his neck, way too cumbersome for jimmy's style of lead.
    also amazing is jimmy, robert, and john paul in the first half of the song, no drums or bass but they are so in synch and intricate it really brings home the amazing talent of this band.

    This isnt the Seattle Show I was there in 77 on the floor in front of the Stage
    Plant was wearing a bright white shirt during Stairway to heaven and walked out to the audience on a stage extension during the song

    This seems to be the cleanst version I have heard. usually Page is up on so much drugs he can barely play a note. No wonder why they never professionally released anything from this time.

      +Giambattista Vico JOHN HENRY BONHAM 7:33 Inventive, fantastic musician known for putting together a groove on the drums no other drummer can can match. All 3 surviving members knew after John was gone, it was over. The fantastic powerhouse of rock music known as Led Zeppelin was no more. They had closed the book, disbanded, and stopped writing songs for good as a group after Bonham died. Quite understandably so.
