Yep, and they look really nice too. The top level is good for storage and they lock. lol you don’t need to worry about someone in your house stealing your books
Your comic book storage is incredible. I have been trying to find file cabinets for my books but they are either super expensive or the seller is too far away. This is a perfect alternative.
These aren’t finished carpentry by any means. I didn’t want the weight of the cabinets to be too heavy to place on my upstairs floor. So that is why they are made of plywood and not a heavier material. But the ease of access for my books is what I love the best. Easily the best thing of I’ve ever done in regards to storing comic books.
Oh man, that’s a dream, I have the boxes now but I too hate the use of them as they’ve started pilling up and thought about doing a project like this down the road, that shelf idea is amazing!
YOU SIR ARE LEGEND AND LIFESAVER THIS IS WHAT I WAS TRYING TO FIND FOR A WEEK FOR NOW COULD YOU TELL ME THE DIMENSIONS OF WHOLE THING AND EACH BOX PLEASE
These are a very low tech solution to the problem of moving long boxes. For years I was moving long boxes around. Now I just slide drawers open and I can find or put books away with ease. Glad this video could inspire you. 👊🏼
These are definitely not furniture grade. But I like them. My comic book room is in my second floor. I was worried about the weight if I used heavier materials. I can’t wait to see your take on these.
Thanks for the kind words. The truth is that I would not count my comic book cabinets as finished carpentry. I was trying to make these as light as could be, and as cheap. These cabinets are on my second floor and the weight of comic books can add up. So the material of the cabinets needed to be light but strong enough to hold the weight of the comics themselves. Also cheap. I wanted to build an entire unit, one row of four drawers, out of one 4x8 sheet of plywood and a 4x8 sheet of mdf board. I may have gone with different material if this was on top of a concrete slab where weight was not a worry. Even though I say this isn’t finished carpentry. I still love the rough look and the ease of use for my collection. Thanks again for the kind words.
Yeah, I didn’t want to make something that I could never move. Now it would be a major pain to move these. But something that one person could do in an afternoon. Thanks for the nice compliments.

solid storage, hand made drawers, solid work, nice modularity. kudos! a small platform below would gaurd vs most moisture, water pipe issues. (i got smashed by hurricane ian) great video, thx
That base idea is a great thought. The floor that the comic book room is on doesn’t have any water pipes on it. The thought of a base did cross my mind. If I only made them 3 high, there would have been a 3 inch base. But since we built them 4 high we decided to not put a base underneath. That way the top isn’t too tall.
Your first vid on your comic room made me realize that i need to organize more my storage room! That's my current project. Thanks for the inspiration 👍Great help! 👊
Throughout the 90s and early 2000s I made several cabinets and drawers to hold about 1600 of my CDs. I may have to get busy and make some cabinets like yours. I don't have any room, so I may have to swap the CDs with the comics in long boxes! I read more than listen to music nowadays anyway (and watch WAY too many YT channels).
I used to listen to a lot of music myself. But it seems that part of my life has changed. Even when I drive to work rarely do I listen to music in the morning. I think we all watch way too much TH-cam 😂😆
Those drawers are awesome! I'll try to replicate it for myself! One thing though I would change is the bottom drawers and add some height below them. I don't know, any slight flooding or water situation on the room and the comics can get easily damaged. But that's just me being paranoid. Cheers!
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you like these. Makes collecting so much easier. I weighted the benefit of adding a three inch base to the bottom to whether the top row would be too high to my 5’10 frame. The comics are on my top floor in the house and I don’t have any water pipes up this high in the house. If these were on a lower floor, then without a doubt they would have had a base on the bottom.
Thank you sir! I create Regie with the inspiration to complete my drawers. I had done one set of these drawers before following him but he gave me the mental nudge that I needed to make enough for my entire collection.
Great comic room and I love those drawers! I am not handy so that would be quite a challenge for me but at the moment I use comic book shells for my short box comics. They slide like a drawer and you can stack them pretty easily. But I definitely like your setup better!

Beautifully organized. My books are just all over the place. But I also don't have nearly as many comics as you. You should make a how to video on how to make it.
Thank you! 🙏 Being about to look for a book and find it within seconds, was my dream for years. Building these drawers has made collecting so much easier. They are a game changer.
I'm sure it was asked in the comments somewhere, and I watched this vid with the sound off, but do you by chance have plans to build this? Or recommended measurements? And if you already answered that in the video, my apologies. It is FANTASTIC!
Sorry, I built these a few years ago and I don’t have the plans anymore. But I do remember drawing it out on the back of a cocktail napkin. 😀 Didn’t make them overly difficult in design.
Those cabinets were a dream that I had for years. I’m always looking to improve on so many things in my life. And I got tired of moving long boxes all of the time.
What you don’t realize is that I built these because I’m lazy. 😁😎 I got tired of moving long boxes around. Having these drawers takes the work out of organizing this collection.
The difficult thing about these cabinets is figuring out how to make Matt Woods take a vacation at my house and build me these cabinets! Matt, would you like to visit the Mile High City?! LOL!!!
Bro you won’t believe this but I was just in Denver last week. Well at least the airport. I had a connection flight at Denver Airport. Not enough time to build a cabinet but still I was there 😁😂
My husband has so many comics and they’re just in boxes in our basement I’ve been wanting to make a comic display room and I’d really like to learn how to make drawers like this
These drawers were made with two things in mind. Weight and price, the drawers are on the second floor of my house. I did not want to put too much weight on the floor joists. That is why the outer shell is made of raw plywood. MDF would have been a nicer finish but would have weighed 3X the current weight. The other goal was to keep the price low. The price still isn’t “cheap” but since it wasn’t going to be the nicest grade of furniture it might as well be cheap. These drawers work well in my upstairs comic book room but they would not look as nice in a common area of the house. These are not furniture grade. That being said I love how these turned out. They make storing my comics so much easier and more organized. The design was literally a sketch on the back of a cocktail napkin. If you know how to build a box out of wood. These are easy to make. If not they are still “easy” to make but you need to do research to learn how to make a box. The only added step is to add drawer slides and connect the two boxes. My carpentry skill level is not quite a novice but far far from a master carpenter.
The display in the front is what I really wanted. For years my books went into long boxes and I never saw them again. I love having the ability to display the covers that I really like. As you can tell, I really like to display my comic books. But truth be told, for years these books wouldn’t see the light of day. They were always put away. Life is better now that I can see them.
Very nice design and execution!! A few questions... 1. What is the pound rating of the slides? 2. And do you recall what brand or where you purchased them? 3. Also, can you confirm the measurements of one of the 4 cabinet openings that house the slides and drawers? 4. How did you connect your plywood pieces? Guessing pocket screws as there are no fasteners visible that I can see on the exterior of the cabinet. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the kind words. 1. I remember the pound rating for the slides that I purchased were over 100 lbs. I ordered extra because that I know that as my collection grows we will need to make more drawers. 2. The slides are unbranded. Bought them off of eBay. Took almost a month to arrive. Even though they don’t have a name brand on the slides. They are very stout and work great. 3. I’ll measure the opening later this evening when I’m home. 4. I didn’t get fancy with the screws on this project. I used decking screws and counter sunk them. For the rigidity and squareness there is a back board attached. That makes these cabinets very structural sound and sturdy.
Thanks for the kind words. 🙏 I’ve shown many of the Conan books in my collection on many of the videos on the channel. I’ve been lucky enough to hunt down a complete run of every Conan comic book ever printed in the US. Took me quite a few years to get them, but glad I did. I’m sure that they will find a way in future videos but you can always go back and watch some of my old videos.
@@MattWoodsComics will do! Saw that Conan 1 in 9.6 CGC grade in your collection...what a gem! I have it as well in white pages but at a 7.5. Took me years in completing that run, but still missing about 25 or so to complete it. Same with the old Savage Sword run, missing about 40 or so issues. They are hard to track down here in Canada and the pandemic didn't help as prices seem to have skyrocketed. In any case, I will check out your videos, they are great! Keep it up, love your content!
Dude!!! This is amazing!! I’ve been trying to figure out a nice aesthetic for my comic collection and you sir, have provided the answer!!! How many comics can each drawer hold? What is the width of each unit? Thanks again man, Rob
Thanks for the kind words hope this video helps you. Each drawer will hold about 250 comics 300 if squeezed but I try to not squeeze that many in. Each of the cabinets is 43 3/4 in wide. Each cabinet hold four drawers the drawers outside dimension is 8 7/8 wide. I measured a gold age comic book backing board and made sure that I had clearance for that size of a book.
Ive been tossing around this idea for months now.but cost of materials is slowing me down.im finding out that constantly digging thru boxes even organized on shelves is becoming a hassle.plus im getting too old to waste time digging for my own books!!!👍
The price of lumber is crazy high right now. I just got tired moving my long boxes every time I need to find a book or put a book away. That gets old after awhile. Making these drawers made my life so much easier.
that great looking, and so practical. I struggle with keeping my collection organized. I switched to short boxes a while back because moving long boxes was difficult. I like that how you make things modular with the 1x4 design; actually that's the reason i switched to short boxes, because it gave me more flexibility with stacking/arranging. Since I'm not very handy, I might consider hiring someone in my area to make something like your setup. Q: how do you keep safe from the top shelves pivoting forward if all 4 shelves are extended?
Thanks for the kind words. The answer on how I keep the top shelf from tipping is to only open one or two drawers at a time. Very few times have I ever needed to open more than one of them up at the same time. You can always put a connecting plate on the sides to keep the top cabinet from flipping. I’ve thought about doing that myself but honestly never found the need to do so.
Hi! This is amazing thank you. How many books can you store per drawer? I am going to make this design for my man cave and want to be able to store a lifetime of comic collecting. Cheers
Thanks for the kind words! The drawers will hold about 250 comic books each. I build 12 cabinets with four drawers each. So the set up as I have it now will hold about 12,000 comic books.
Just watched your video for the first time and the cabinets are awesome looking! I’m currently in the process of trying to find a set up that would work. I like that it’s a single layer and then another layer could always be added on later. Would it be ok to ask for the specs for your cabinets?
I forget the measurements of these cabinets off the top of my head. The design was kinda done on the back of a napkin. But I get a lot of questions about the specs. Need to measure these drawers and do a video about them. Stay tuned,… 😃
The sides are cut 24” deep. With the back on it is 24 3/4 The width is 43 1/2 The height is 13 1/4 They were made to fit up to golden age books in the drawers. But they aren’t big enough to fit magazine size comics.
That was a legitimate question that I had myself. But after four years I’ve not seen any yellowing of the bags and boards that have been stored in the drawers. Even in a long box stored in a dry room you will see some yellowing after a half dozen years or so. The poly bags would be the first place that gasing issues showed up. Since it has only been four years, it might not have been long enough to determine. So far so good. No noticeable gasing issues detected. Honest to goodness great question and one that I have been monitoring closely.
I subscribed to your channel last winter because I was looking for videos of people showing off their comic rooms. One of the first videos that came up was the video of you “remodeling” your comic room! I’ve been enjoying your content ever since then! Great breakdown of your “homemade” longboxes! How much do you think they weight? Keep up the great work!
3/4 plywood weights 61 lbs per sheet and 1/2 MDF weights 46.7 lbs per sheet. So without comics each cabinet weights about 110 pounds. Now I’m not sure of the weight of the comics on top of that. Thanks for watching and subbing my channel. I’ve really been enjoying putting out videos.
I really don’t have specs for these cabinets. This was a project that I just sketched on the back of a cocktail napkin. Sorry I wish that I did draft these so someone else could make them. But these are in no way what I would call finished cabinetry. I professional (or good amateur) woodworker could a much better job. These worked perfect for the job that I needed them to do.
Thanks Brandon! Unfortunately I never posted the specs. I had them at one time but have since lost my cut list. This was the type of project that I drew up on a napkin. These aren’t really what I would call ‘quality’. I needed them to be light because my comic room is on my second floor and as cheap as could be. I just built them to be strong and function like they do. As you saw in the video they work well for what they were made for.
Impressed with the drawer set up. I did not expect to see that it extends out. Pretty cool. Not sure if I missed but how wide is it? Or how many books can go in each drawer?
These are just slightly shorter than a long box. I can fit about 225 safely or about 275 (too tight) per drawer. I made them to fit Golden age to modern size comic books.
I’m going to do a room tour video in a couple of weeks. I’ll show how I use J-Channel to hang the books on the wall. But that is how the stay up there safely.
I made them to fit up to and including Golden Age comic books. I did not make them large enough for magazine size comics. But it would be easy enough to make the drawers large enough to fit the magazines.
Would it be possible for you to sell the blueprint, dimensions and product buy list for those of us that want to build something similar. I would like to have the same set up.
I really should put something like that out. Truth be told I drafted this project up on a price of scrap paper. Anyone with the slightest handyman skills could build one in a day
Thanks Brian. Organization makes a world of difference in a comic book collection. I have all but a small handful of book past 100 in my ASM run. I only have about 20 books under issue 100. One of these days I’ll look to finish up on my ASM run.
The price of lumber is really high right now. Now I don’t remember exactly what these cost but I think that one cabinet was close to $100 at the time. Each cabinet hold four drawers and around 1000 comics. The full extension drawer slides were the largest expense at the time. Each cabinet was made out of one full sheet of 3/4 plywood. 1 full sheet of 1/2 MDF board. 1 18x24 inch sheet of plexiglas. Drawer Handles, and drawer slides. Price of material is a lot higher now. No way to make it for $100 now.
I don’t, sorry. Wish that I had made up plans. This was more of an idea that I had and drew out on the back of a cocktail napkin one evening. Thanks for watching.
I made these a few years ago and lost the cut list I wrote up. If memory serves me right. Just took the size of a golden age comic book and made the measurements to accommodate them with extra room. Honestly, this was the kind of project that I drew out on a piece of scrap paper.

Awesome video. Those look so nice and love the display part in front of each one. #keepitcasual #fullwatch #growtogether
Absolutely awesome!
Thanks man 🙏 making these cabinets is a life saver.
I remember seeing those videos of the cabinets. It was before I knew you or was subbed. I think those shelves are iconic comic youtube viewing.
Thanks man! Much appreciated
Great setup! Saw a few glimpses of your Conan books, would you be interested in showing them more in a future video please? Cheers!
Thanks again man,
Rob
Thanks for the kind words hope this video helps you.
Each drawer will hold about 250 comics 300 if squeezed but I try to not squeeze that many in.
Each of the cabinets is 43 3/4 in wide. Each cabinet hold four drawers the drawers outside dimension is 8 7/8 wide. I measured a gold age comic book backing board and made sure that I had clearance for that size of a book.
@@MattWoodsComics you sir, are an absolute superstar!! Thanks so much!!!
Love this!
These drawers make organizing the collection so much simpler. Thanks for watching. 👊
I envy your craftsmanship.
These are low quality. But they work perfectly.
@@MattWoodsComics that’s all that matters
It would probably take me 2 weeks to find my Spawn #123. Well done.
I had a hard time finding books before building these drawers. So I feel your pain. 👊🏼
Great camera work!
The young man is such an asset to the channel.
@@MattWoodsComics i agree cant wait until i can get there too!!!👍
If you ever do make drawers please take lots of pictures
@@MattWoodsComics definitely!
that great looking, and so practical.
I need to maker some of these
They have made organizing so much easier. Best decision I ever made with my collection.
Great video
Thank you Jeremy Smiley, I appreciate you, thanks for watching.
Love this. Do you have the blueprints
Wish I did, I wrote on the plans on the back of a cocktail napkin.
Amazing system, do you have a parts list and dimensions for this
Sorry, no parts list, I designed this on the back of a cocktail napkin
Just watched your video for the first time and the cabinets are awesome looking! I’m currently in the process of trying to find a set up that would work. I like that it’s a single layer and then another layer could always be added on later. Would it be ok to ask for the specs for your cabinets?
I forget the measurements of these cabinets off the top of my head. The design was kinda done on the back of a napkin. But I get a lot of questions about the specs. Need to measure these drawers and do a video about them. Stay tuned,… 😃
Can you give us admirers the outside measurements of the 1x4’s ?
The sides are cut 24” deep. With the back on it is 24 3/4
The width is 43 1/2
The height is 13 1/4
They were made to fit up to golden age books in the drawers. But they aren’t big enough to fit magazine size comics.
your design is the one I'm going with ,how many books does your set up hold ?
Each drawer can hold about 250 comics. So about 1000 per cabinet.
After 4 years, I'm curious if you've seen any off gassing issues with the wood on your bags.
I really like these drawers. Do you have specs that you can pass along for people who are interested in building these?
I really don’t have specs for these cabinets. This was a project that I just sketched on the back of a cocktail napkin. Sorry I wish that I did draft these so someone else could make them. But these are in no way what I would call finished cabinetry. I professional (or good amateur) woodworker could a much better job. These worked perfect for the job that I needed them to do.
@@MattWoodsComics Some of the best ideas start from sketches on napkins. lol
Wow cool 8 draws of Spider-Man
One of these days I work on finishing my run of ASM books.
Cabinets look good and function perfectly. Do you have the specs posted?
Great video! Enjoyed seeing your setup... what do you use to mount the comics on that ceiling/wall?
I’m going to do a room tour video in a couple of weeks. I’ll show how I use J-Channel to hang the books on the wall. But that is how the stay up there safely.
Would those drawers hold golden age size books or magazine sizes?
I made them to fit up to and including Golden Age comic books. I did not make them large enough for magazine size comics. But it would be easy enough to make the drawers large enough to fit the magazines.
Would it be possible for you to sell the blueprint, dimensions and product buy list for those of us that want to build something similar. I would like to have the same set up.
I really should put something like that out. Truth be told I drafted this project up on a price of scrap paper. Anyone with the slightest handyman skills could build one in a day
Can I get the dimensions and material u used
Matt, great cabinets. Well organized collection. What left on the ASM run?
Thanks Brian. Organization makes a world of difference in a comic book collection. I have all but a small handful of book past 100 in my ASM run. I only have about 20 books under issue 100. One of these days I’ll look to finish up on my ASM run.
@@MattWoodsComics Can't go wrong with ASM!
I pull up the (VERY) rough estimate of this costing $4,000 to build, given a single plywood sheet nowadays is $80 each
The price of lumber is really high right now.
Do you have drawings prints available
I don’t, sorry. Wish that I had made up plans. This was more of an idea that I had and drew out on the back of a cocktail napkin one evening. Thanks for watching.
Late to the party. What are you measurements? All materials?
I made these a few years ago and lost the cut list I wrote up. If memory serves me right. Just took the size of a golden age comic book and made the measurements to accommodate them with extra room. Honestly, this was the kind of project that I drew out on a piece of scrap paper.
These are great! But almost gave a thumbs down because you didn't like 1602 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🖤☕🤘🏻
😂😂😆 I wanted to like that series but it just didn’t hit me right! I do need to reread it. I haven’t read this series since it came out.

Lol, every time I saw that I have that thought. Can never take the kid out of us can we? 😆
@@MattWoodsComics NEVAR!!
But seriously thanks for showing them again.. they're awesome!

I should have drafted plans. But this was more of a project that was written down on a cocktail napkin.
