Wow, I am a person who does a lot of self-educating and when I picked up chemistry, I quickly found myself in a spot where I was like "Well, this is all great and stuff, but I really need some practical experience at this point".
Then I spent some time to search for laboratory simulations, but didn't find anything that seemed to be in any way elaborate enough to provide a valid learning experience.
This is something that I feel may close a huge gaping hole in education.
    Awesome.

I have used several medical apps on my HTC Vive and with that i know for a fact that this Ted Talk absolutely nails it.
Virtual reality is *incredibly* immersive, and would greatly enhance the learning experience.
Regarding their metrics of at least doubling the learning effectiveness. I bet there is still *a lot* more room for that to grow. Simply based off of the fact that i recognize that there is still so much room for growth in terms of the quality of said apps.
Heck the simple fact that i can actually walk around and reach out into these virtual worlds with my HTC Vive controllers, absolutely trumps anything they showed in this video.
What they are also not measuring, is the effectiveness in instilling a passion for science into these students. Though they did mention one thing. The surprise from the students themselves, when they realized they essentially sat in class for 2 hours straight, without once checking facebook. That, is amazing.
But that also truly highlights the issues with our current education system. If something such as the awe-inspiring inner functions of the universe, are not keeping students engaged. Then that's a *big problem* and the problem definitely does not lie in the students, but in the teachers, and the teaching process.
Sure some students such as myself are lucky enough to be enthralled by science. But again i attribute that to nothing more than luck on my part.

Really interesting, but i have two remarks :
    - 160 students devided into 3 groups doesn't represent a high enough number of subjects for a study to be convincing
    - If we make the learning thought a simulation of what we know of the universe, it might forbid students to make discoveries
But those are small problems compared to the benefits it would bring.
Just pure access to knowledge where ever you are, an ability to learn trough practice witch is mandatory in my eye, and the possibility to learn at your own rhythm.

Additionally this simulation has the potential to diminish waste.

As a future educator, I believe that this is an incredible way to help increase the minds of the next young science generation. I am studying at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology to become a high school teacher, more specifically to teach general science (grade 9 - 10) and biology (grade 11 - 12). This piece of technology will immensely help engage students, in their ability to learn or want to learn science. It will motivate students to participate and expand their minds. At our University, we focus on how to incorporate technology to help enhance students learning and bring them closer to the truth than ever before. The virtual lab Labster does just that.
By first teaching the students verbally about these different types of real-world lab scenarios then asking them through a problem or project-based learning to carry it out in a gaming process with increase their attention span and elaborate their learning abilities.
Loved watching this TED talk video, and I can’t wait to incorporate different types of technology and programs into my classroom (such as labster) when I enter the school as a professional teacher.

What's been happening in education innovation in the past few years isn't as dismal as he makes it sound. It's not really fair to dismiss what Khan Academy does as not revolutionary. They don't just make lecture videos. They're supporting a flipped classroom model that in the end will probably make a greater difference than this new tech, as great as it is. People said TV and radio would revolutionize education, and neither did. You can't just use new mediums and buy better equipment; you need to fundamentally change what teachers and students do together, and move away from in-class lectures. The flipped classroom is a key part of that, and Khan Academy has already been working on it for a while.

Beautiful and very professional presentation. Kudos to Michael Bodekaer.
I know that the word "lab" has taken on a very wide variety of meanings, but in science, it should mean doing experiments with real stuff. (Sure, there are simulations in science that allow explorations that are used to inform work in the real world.)
Animated simulations do help with certain sorts of learning. They are great for visualization, for example. You cannot see DNA zipping or unzipping in a microscope. This action has been inferred from lots of experiments but never seen. This sort of visual aid can help students overcome problems with difficult science concepts. They are also a way to repeat some science "facts." I used quotes because science works with empirical data and abjures the concept of a fact.
Simulated lab procedures can also help students prepare for the real thing.
The most important aspects of learning science are more abstract. They are developing scientific thinking skills, understanding the nature of science, and appreciating the complexity and ambiguity of empirical work. For these, there are no better means for learning than interacting with the real world. Simulations do not come close -- even in 3D. #SmartScience.

I believe this idea of a virtual lab is the next step to solving many problems in and outside of the classroom. The video claims to increase the effectiveness of the instructors by connecting virtual stimulation to real life lectures; which will help combat boredom and disengagement in the classroom. Additionally, through both game-based learning, and problem-based learning, students have an outlet to test out their own hypothesis and learn from mistakes in a safe environment. This will help develop solutions to future problems the students relate to more. Furthermore, the virtual lab coupled with real-life practices will aid experiential learning. I believe that this concept will increase intrinsic motivation in students and coupled with flow, and grit.

You may have had a thought about it but without solid product development this means nothing. "Your" idea is just a jumble of thoughts in your head until you actually do some work and create something to make it function. In your vein of reasoning star trek should be praised as the source of the touch screen and advanced handheld phones just because they thought it would be cool to put it into their episodes.
If your argument held water I would be the official inventor of the spaghetti materialization device (SMD) which creates spaghetti out of pure energy at the push of a button, but I'm an unsung hero because people didn't listen to my grand idea. By the way the SMD works through science, because I already went to the hard work of thinking of the idea, I can leave the rest of the easy stuff to the development team.

I had a college chem class over a decade ago that did basically this: you could mix chemical solutions in whatever way you chose and then do various things to examine the results, in a virtual program. As far as teaching method goes, this isn't particularly new.
I do think it's a good idea, though. I liked that class.
The idea of putting advanced pieces of equipment in a virtual environment in order to let people toy with them without actually exposing real equipment to misuse is a good one, but who knows how practical it is to keep such programs up-to-date with actual equipment. I suppose as the VR technology improves it will be easier to keep up. The real teaching advantage of something like this is it makes it so (to quote Kerbal Space Program) failure is an option. People will be able to try doing things they aren't supposed to and learn why not to do them in a practical setting, which is something you basically never get in traditional teaching.

sounds like a brilliant way to improve teaching, but as far as innovating, use of a virtual lab would surely be limited, you can't make the equipment do something that hasn't already been done, they need to code the machines, so while students could surely be inspired and better educated which could lead to innovation, they could do with creating a connection between these students and actual real lab facilities.

I'm wondering how usable this technology is right now. We didn't get to try it from watching the video, but just by looking at some of the graphics & movements on the screen it did seem a bit dated and possibly glitchy.
Why does education always seem to be 10 years behind in technology that we see in gaming & entertainment? I guess educational stuff is harder to make, and maybe there's less of a financial incentive, at least in the short term. This technology definitely seems to have a lot of great potential though.

The idea of a lab is to do the experiment and see how the universe works, what's the reaction you are getting. If you have all of that programmed in a software you are not discovering anything new...you just runt a well known and limited software based on well known, common reactions.

The concept is sound and inevitable, but the demonstrated games are not taking full advantage of virtual reality.
For example, consider how virtual reality can significantly assist students in the visualisation of non-static higher dimensional geometric objects in mathematics, or, the properties of light and its distribution amongst mediums (I suspect it will be significantly easier for students to understand the behaviour of light given that they have assisted visualisation of VR).

I wouldn't worry about that. There will still be plenty of boring work for students even if they are able to experiment with virtual equipment. If anything it will help more students remain interested in science because it is more hands on rather than the rote memorization we see with traditional textbook and lecture teaching. It might prepare them even better for real world science.

I absolutely love this idea. To be honest though I don't like my science teacher though. She has taught me almost nothing over a course of a whole year. I am a bit above grade level but that is still no excuse. At the middle of the school year I corrected her about what the sun was made out of(plasma) then she just kept on with the lesson. We also took a test at the begging and end of the year. I got dumber. 1 year in her class and she has tough me nothing important whatsoever. It just makes me frustrated. Our end of the year "finals" were writing fucking apology letters to our classmates. At least half of everyone just made up things and lied.

I don't know how stupid or not they are - but I didn't see any device that wasn't produced by Apple in the video. Even when they spoke about tablets, they only mentioned ios ones. So unless they are merely bad at marketing, I'm guessing they don't support windows or linux

They make it sound like the possibility to do interactive learning has something to do with VR. Chris Crawford has been preaching about revolutionizing learning by computer aided interactivity and games since the 80s without any large success. Its a shame it takes some weird new technology that no one really knows what to do with to stimulate the markets creativity to figure out these kinds of ideas.
An interactive laboratory simulator in the same quality they are showing could have been done 15 years ago. The fact that you can look around the laboratory by moving your actual head is not essential. As long as hand (and preferably spatial) movements are not integrated, a normal screen, mouse and keyboard would make an almost-as-good simulator for learning. So why now all of a sudden?
Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful that they are exploring these applications now. Better late than never. I just don't feel they deserve any points for innovative ideas. What they do deserve points for is taking it out in the field and testing it in a real educational environment.

It is likely that because it was executed incorrectly.
In my personal experience, computers have assisted me *_extensively_*, computer games such that of 4X games (e.g. Civilization 5, Endless Legend etc.) has greatly educated (by experience) me on e.g. strategy, politics, economics etc., while MOBA games (e.g. HoN, Dota 2 etc.) have significantly assisted me in becoming aware of e.g. geographical surroundings, positioning, maneuvers both absolute and relative (for example, the most basic is to utilise flanks of enemy bodies, to e.g. minimise the effects of Area of Effects, maximise vision around potential enemy positions etc.) etc..
Of course, the next is the Internet and the WWW, the greatest library of libraries ever created.
True, there is a genetic factor to intelligence, the significance is still being debated due to the nature of biological systems being chaotic and complex (dynamic), however, environmental factors are extensively important, and in my experience, computers are one of the most important factor in my life that has influenced my intelligence (there are both positives and negatives of course, from the influence of my father to the severe negative influence of linear education and malnutrition during limited stages of my life), without computers, I'm not so certain I would be as intelligent as I am now, all else being equal of course.
And to be honest, the difference between "educational games" developed by "educators" and "fun games" developed by real game developers is extremely, huge, including in complexity. Hence, it is likely that the educators lack talent, and were unable to execute them correctly. Talent is very, very important you see, this is known of course, and is true in game developement as well.

Interesting perspective. There was one interesting ted talk about how our IQ has improved a lot over the last couple of centuries due to the need of abstract thinking. Computer interaction in all its form has been a big part of that.
I think you highlighted something important at the end. The difference between fun and educational.
While there has always been those who thought that games could be something more than just fun, no publisher or anything in the game industry (where the talent is) has been that interested. Fun and especially stupid fun sells better than anything else.
If you think about it its kind of a big waste of the most expressive medium we've got. every other medium, whether its writing, art, music, movie...In "games" they all come together with the additional element "interactivity". If you think about what all the other medium has been used for over the years you will realize "fun" is just a small part of it.
The main reason why the "games" never have become as rich as the other medium is the high cost of making games, the skill it takes and a specific narrow minded mentality about games that seem to have become the standard in the industry. The indie game trend the last 10 years have partly cured the narrow-mindedness.
Motivations for creating stuff for a smaller target audience must however either come from within that target audience (which I think this video demonstrates) Or due to lower cost and skill to making the stuff.
I just realized VR may be the thing that makes it seem just fun enough to get the industry to take a second look at it.
I myself think that building platforms, tools and engines tailored to specific niches of interactive experiences and makes it both easy and cheaper to develop is important for a "revolution" to happen. Raising awareness of games as not only for fun is also important.
I use the word "game" very sloppy here. What I hope for the future is that a new word for interactive media emerges that games are just one part of. I also hope that the line between what is a fun, educational or therapeutic interactive experience gets harder to draw due to a broad range of different stuff that are created.

The new math word problem becomes a video problem... But one additional point should-not be overlooked: 'virtual-lab'ing will be the way of the real laboratory too, as researchers sitting comfortably outside and controlling their doppelgängerbots doing the real work on the inside, accomplish more and better science faster-or vice versa inside-out on Mars...
