This video is awesome. Adam and Norm just chilling and in sync with each other. Painting and weathering with such ease, shows the years of experience both of them have.
I have a custom Mando helmet that I painted in my classroom (I'm an elementary art teacher) and after I smoothed mine out and prepped for paint I used Rust-Oleum high gloss enamel black as the base coat and then Rust-Oleum custom color chrome silver for the main "beskar" metal color. I ended up with a finish very similar to your first helmet. Loved this video. Anything with the creative process is a must for me.
Making stuff look worn and used like this is amazing. Ive done a LITTLE bit of stuff like this, and when i do i try and think about WHERE on the object would get the most wear, where you would actually grab it when taking a helmet off and on. I think about where the helmet would hit the ground if you were fall or lay back on it, basically where the dirt and grime would end up at from your hands and the world around you as well as where that same dirt and grime would end up being rubbed off or smeared around the most.
I see where the acrylics for panel lining would be good for time. If time wasn't a factor and you had issues with the acrylics drying too quickly (looked like Norm was having trouble), oil paints have a much longer cure time, so they're easier to remove.
Oils or an enamel like Tamiya black panel liner for the long grooves. It would offer time to correct mistakes, and capillary action would make it quicker to apply in those areas.
Adam's bit about focusing on fixing what's going to be seen (the front of the helmet rather than the back) reminded me a lot of my 3D Game Art class lol. There's a super common thing, normally called back-face culling, where Game Artists know a part of a wall or something won't be seen and they just don't even bother making it.
That helps with the rendering time too. Less stuff to cull/draw = faster frame rates and less memory. sucks if you want to 3d print an object from a game though! :)
Adam, teach norm some more about spray painting! He has some things he can work on, but I feel like there are techniques that you two could make a video on showing "tricks of the trade"
Don't get me wrong, I love the weathered look on these helmets. Both of them turned out looking really good. Beautiful though the weathering is, it's inaccurate to the material. I don't agree that the Mando armor needs to be beaten to Hell and back, and here's why: Beskar doesn't rust, and this helmet for Djarin, as we saw, was constructed of beskar harvested during the Great Purge. He also takes care of this armor because his upbringing means that respecting it is respecting his culture. This is the way. The beskar will dirty in battle, but it will be cleaned and maintained meticulously much like a samurai and his katana. Mando sticks out in this beaten up and dirty galaxy because of this. So I don't feel it is anyone's right to begrudge clean armor. If someone wants beaten up armor, they can have it; inaccurate as it may be it does look nice. But any cosplayer who understands the character enough to also keep their armor clean is 100% ok in my book.
Adam and Norm are two of my favorite people. And, as cool as it is to see them together in a video... I have to admit, I really like the "Hey I'm Adam in my cave talking to my phone" vibe a lot more. It's just more "personal" or something. I know that just started because of the pandemic, but now that I've seen it... I kind of hope they don't get away from that feel.
I switched to an airbrush paint (Vallejo Game Air) for painting WH40K minis with a brush, as the difference between perfectly thinned and puddle is extremely fine. Pre-thinned airbrush paint is perfect for how I paint.
The Bkack Series must have originally beena mirror chrome finish and then was dulled down at the factory in order for the gloss Adam sprayed to bring it back to mirror chrome. It's really fun watching these guys. Adam gets so giddy and seeing Norm progress over the last few years. Love the 1 day build videos guys. Keep them coming.
I'm just wondering, How could I dole it down just a little bit to make it look like metal without using the floor wax? I don't have an air brush but I would like something just to bring it down a little bit from the mirror finish so it looks like metal
This makes my mandalorian soul so happy 😁 even clean kits need a bit of something. And weathering is very much an art. Sometimes less is more, sometimes you need to look like you survived re-entry into an atmosphere XD all depends on what you want to tell in the story of your kit.
I think that the reason why there are soo many clean #mando suits is that lots and lots of people love the look of clean chrome and don’t want to “ruin” that paint job.
I'm just excited we live in an era when these are open and available to anyone, within a reasonable budget. Also that be an easy way to achieve a chrome storm trooper look.
This man is always capable of making my day and at the same time inspire me to keep building, painting and weathering stuff and for that I thank you mr Savage
I don't want to knock the weathering done here, because it is accurate to some scenes, but there is a wealth of screen caps and reference photos that show the helmet and the rest of the beskar clean and shiny.
Yup the Hasbro was meant to be based on his early S2 helmet which was far cleaner and shinier. But I can't deny that Adam's weathering makes it look far cooler.
I can smell the scent of aerosol and paint through the screen and it's making me want to go and start painting right now. Just leave work now on lunch and go to my shop.
Even after the wax and clear coat that looked astoundingly better! I'm considering doing this to my own helmet now but I've only painted small props before
I wethered my Black series Wedge X-Wing helmet and bricking it at the start!. I'd never taken something brand new and weathered it. But boy am I glad I did!!!!!!
I love weathering. When a friend made a pirate costume for the Texas ren faire, we literally went to the Gulf, got run drunk while sitting in seaweed all day, then let the costume bake in the sun on a mannequin. Worked beautifully for that extra realism.
wish this would have showed up in my recommended about 3 months ago when I did this with my Hasbro Death Watch helmet... making me think about redoing it and starting with that nice shiny chrome base despite knowing that it looked easy because you've been doing this kind of thing professionally since I was a kid.
Adam, eveybody has their Mando armor shiny and clean because Din Djarin takes BEAUTIFUL care of his armor. And unless he's just been killing a Krayt dragon from the inside or nearly blown to smithereens on Navarro, he's looking spiffy and shiny. Mostly it's because the show people LOVE the fact that he volume is able to be reflected in Din's armor and they don't *have* to keep it scratched up and scruffy looking to hide the fact that he's on a soundstage. But go back and look at the show...unless he's fresh of a battlefield or a hike through the desert, he's looking like a BOSS. Mandalorians are actually SUPPOSED to take meticulous care of their armor, because it's a family heirloom and a way of showing respect to the ones who wore it before.
Vallejo Black model wash…..absolutely perfect for this job in aging the helmet ….It already watered down so it easily gets into the crack and crevices. I just used this tonight and it worked great. I use this in my air Brush normally but tonight I just put some in a bowl and used a brush to dab it on. Give it a try
Thank you Adam Savage’s Tested for this video. I am a Star Wars collector who purchased the Black Series helmet and want to weather the helmet! Question: I purchased the Sideshow Baby Yoda-which I love! My only mild criticism is that he doesn’t have the “peach fuzz” hair on his ears. I know the ears are a hard plastic, but is it possible to add the hair to the top of the ears? If so, tutorial video please! May the Force Be with You.
It's so interesting that these methodes of making something look more realistic are pretty much the exact same methodes I use to create realistic looking textures (but digital of course).
He dropped the roughness and upped the specularity, lol. I found this funny as well because of the various effects vids on peacekeepers helmet vid and when your filming stuff with chrome/reflective effects and the last thing you want is the camera and crew reflected in the scene.
I'm pretty sure the Hasbro finish is vac metal coasted with a matte varnish to dull it down, so of course it looks like chrome when you remove the roughness.
I really like that chrome-ish effect that Adam got on his initially. Kind of Mandalorian meets Cylon, which may not be that practical for combat armor, but it sure looks great.
This is such perfect timing for this video!! I just got my bobafett helmet and want to paint it to make it look more screen accurate, I'm soo excited to weather it and seeing this is helping so much to understand how to make it look even better, where to go harder and where to give space for the eyes to rest and fill in the story
Mando was clean when he first walked into the bar after his armor was made, the clean versions aren't wrong, the dirty versions aren't wrong, and the pre-beskar versions aren't wrong...

I'm just excited we live in an era when these are open and available to anyone, within a reasonable budget. Also that be an easy way to achieve a chrome storm trooper look.
The first reviews of the spray brought back CYLON vibes to me
What makes Mando cosplay great is the amount of customization that you can do.
This man is always capable of making my day and at the same time inspire me to keep building, painting and weathering stuff and for that I thank you mr Savage
Ok, I know I’m a little late, this being a year old but this makes me want to buy this helmet and do this. So freaking awesome! Thank you Adam!
I don't want to knock the weathering done here, because it is accurate to some scenes, but there is a wealth of screen caps and reference photos that show the helmet and the rest of the beskar clean and shiny.
Absolutely not true. If you go look at all the references, there is a lot of weathering on the armor
I think it's been a great time for cosplayers since we've all had a year of being inside so people have had lots of time to make great costumes
One Day Builds are the BEST!!
KINDA SICK THAT THIS LOOKS EVEN BETTER THAN THE EXPENSIVE ANOVO ONE BY FAR
I love your painting videos , you can see the fun you get from telegraphing the story
Yes! Adam the Savage is back again!
Even after the wax and clear coat that looked astoundingly better! I'm considering doing this to my own helmet now but I've only painted small props before
Woah the rustoleuim chrome finish is fire, crazy how much it changed by littlr
It's not a toilet seat, it's a beacon of freedom!
Been watching all the videos I can about weathering props from Adam in prep for my custom mando helmet build
Another mellow ODB. Thanks, y'all!
Really cool to see this after getting into spray painting models last summer. Still have a lot to learn!
I wethered my Black series Wedge X-Wing helmet and bricking it at the start!. I'd never taken something brand new and weathered it. But boy am I glad I did!!!!!!
We need more Norm and Adam painting videos!
I love weathering. When a friend made a pirate costume for the Texas ren faire, we literally went to the Gulf, got run drunk while sitting in seaweed all day, then let the costume bake in the sun on a mannequin. Worked beautifully for that extra realism.
We need more build projects!
Oh heck yes!! Have been wanting to do this with mine
The chrome shine that Adam got on the helmet just from using a Rust-Oleum clear spray can blew my fricken mind!!! It was such a good finish.
And then he hit it with the floor wax and brought it back down 😩, that hurt me a little.
wish this would have showed up in my recommended about 3 months ago when I did this with my Hasbro Death Watch helmet... making me think about redoing it and starting with that nice shiny chrome base despite knowing that it looked easy because you've been doing this kind of thing professionally since I was a kid.
cant wait for the full build to come out!!!
Really Cool I’m really Happy with my Mando Helmet to this looks very much improved
Ahhh Great. It’s been awhile.
I think one day builds are what’s getting many through the madness 👍
Mandalorian helmets with green visors look really cool.
Oh I miss the lockdown One Day Builds 😪
Does Bhaskar Rust? Maybe scoring from blaster blasts.
The Anovos helmet looks like Ford "Silver Frost" automotive paint to me.
"just going a couple inches at a time"
yeah you are Savage! love ya!
I can see that chrome finish from Adam's helmet being great for a Peacemaker toilet seat, um, beacon of freedom helmet!
Mando was clean when he first walked into the bar after his armor was made, the clean versions aren't wrong, the dirty versions aren't wrong, and the pre-beskar versions aren't wrong...
Just finished my first weathering project ever, on a Mando helmet (Don Post). Thanks for all the great advice and tips
