Very interesting content yet again. I do however kinda miss the RGB masterclass series, that focussed on getting the best picture out of specific consoles. Those were awesome. Would love to see a video like that again.
I think the problem is that they ran out of consoles people care about, all of which they covered very thoroughly. Most of the advancements in recent years have been in external devices, such as the retrotink 4K, which they cover as they're released. The only other things they could really do would be obscure Japanese consoles from the 80s and 90s (which they don't have AND 99% of western gamers don't care about aside from MAYBE the PC Engine/TG16 and NeoGeo), failed western 90s consoles like the 3DO and Jaguar, and the absolutely ancient stuff from the 70s like the 2600 and Colecovision. I just don't think there's a lot of interest there, and that probably includes Try and Coury. PCE and NG are the only ones I think are really viable if I'm honest. That said, it's could be good to at least have an update/roundup video to go over what's changed over the years for people who want to use those videos as tutorials without having to worry about being out of date or tracking down 15 different videos to get every detail. idk if it's worth the effort of redoing them all again. But maybe!
@@WH250398 I remember thinking the same years ago. Then as I realized all you need is the best cables you can get for each console, and a good upscaler which now the Retrotink is the best. Or go full emulation and/or get a mister fpga. There really isn't a big mystery on the topic anymore. Most old games look like crappy on modern displays compared to how the looked on CRT unless you use emulation to rerender the graphics an add good artificial scanlines. I don't know how good this new Retrotink is, the last one was just inferior to emulation so I sold mine. Your better off with a old CRT or emulation these day in my opinion.
I love your content and trust your reviews, but I have a bit of feedback. It would be nice during videos such as these that you would state at the beginning of the video whether you were paid by the manufacturer, received the item for free, or if the manufacturer had input into the content of the video or reviewed it before it was posted.

Welcome to the club. Spent the better part of 8 years perfecting my home theater for movies and video games (modern and retro). Playing games on a 145'' projector screen with 13 channel Atmos setup from the PS5 and PC is just a mind-blowing experience and I've never gone back. Cost a few pennies, but very well worth it.
About 10 years or so ago I bought an old Sony CRT projector with native analogue inputs. It was shockingly good for retro games. Fantastic contrast, no motion blur and no need for scalers. You could also run modern stuff up to 1080i with a cheap hdmi to vga adapter. I wish I still had it but unfortunately it was the size and weight of Robocop. Good times.
The DCI-P3 mode is a film thing. Doesn't go as bright as Rec.2020 but is more cinema-accurate. For example, the 4K Blu-Ray of Blade Runner uses the full color gamut of the film negative and fills up the HDR color gamut. The movie looks better than it did in theaters in 1982 (especially since it's the Ridley Scott-approved Final Cut). Its sequel, Blade Runner 2049, has a much more subdued DCI-P3 look, due to the cinematographer, Roger Deakins, wanting a cinema-accurate look.
I had an X3000i for a week or two. The DLP rainbows got to me, they said there is tech to limit that but it was still bothering me. I ended up returning it.
I love that you guys made a projector vid follow up. Too many gamers sleep on projectors because they aren’t as fast as the fastest TVs but for the price you get a massive screen and a lot of immersion no matter the resolution. Even playing modern games at 1080p can be amazing with how big the experience feels
Why would you EVER want to use the built in speakers AND external speakers at the same time? All that does is double the front channel sound and likely will never be perfectly in sync with your other speakers.
If it’s analog audio out via the 3.5mm audio out into a soundbar, I’d shouldn’t have any latency. My thought is that the sound bar is for the people in the front of the room, while the built in speakers are for those in the back. Sort of like a zone 2 audio output on an AV Receiver.
I had a projector setup for many years (also using a BENQ projector no less), and it was great for its positives, but the negatives eventually had me going back to a traditional TV. Pros: enormous screen, about as big as you can make it, with great image quality. Cons: Not great with ambient lighting. A pain to set up if you don't want to interrupt the view walking past it. A little bit of warmup and cooldown time to get it up and running. Very easy to get nauseous for people susceptible to motion-sickness when playing 3D games.
My home came with a home theater (large projector screen and ceiling mounted projector, just needed some service), and in that environment it's fantastic. But the entire room is built to make it work!
The black levels actually look great for a DLP projector. This seems like an all around good projector for everything gaming and movies. I bet with an HDfury and LLDV it'll be even better.
6:50 I've owned DLP and 3LCD projectors and in all honesty I wouldn't recommend either technology. Me and my family are susceptible to the rainbow effect of the color wheel found in DLP's and there isn't anyway of getting around it. Some studies suggest that almost 50% of tested people can see the rainbow effect. 3LCD you don't get the rainbow effect but instead you get a big pixel LCD screen effect if you are close enough to the projection. Also the 3LCD panels in the PRISM block eventually rot and degrade from being slowly cooked by the backlight. In summary don't pay more than $500 for a DLP or 3LCD projector as at this point as they are both dated and flawed technologies. Laser projectors have much more promise and you can get one in the same price range as this BenQ. I know I sound jaded and cynical but I feel like these companies are just flogging old components until they eventually make the switch to laser only.
I've noticed that I only see the rainbow effect when I get really close to the projected image and look for it. At a fair distance away I can't see it at all. But could be one of those things that effects you over time without realizing it.
Still waiting on 4k 120hz projectors from BenQ with 2.1 hdmi ports, please release these soon @BenQ!! I see no reason not spending a little more and getting an Epson.
I use a $60 720p projector on a decent screen and it looks better than my friends' that love to use their walls/sheets/etc., but have no problem dropping over half a grand on the projector itself. That's like eating filet mignon off of a trash can lid.
Welcome to the family Coury ! I've been playing games and watching movies on a home projector since 2009 and never really went back to TVs ever since. Coupled with my 7.1 receiver (all my devices - 13 consoles, PC, VHS, LaserDisc and 4K Bluray players - are plugged to it) and a 3.5-meter-wide picture, it makes for a pretty nice setup and an experience I never get tired of !
Man, back in the 90s, the good local arcade had 2 cabs that used projector screens. They had SF2 and MK2, and later swapped MK out for Killer Instinct. I remember how long the line got one day for SF2, that arcade was pretty damn awesome!
I got one of these for my new set up. I had this crazy idea in my head of a setup where I had a drop down projector screen going over my JVC-D series CRT. Suffice to say the set-up is insane, best of both worlds. I never play 240p/480i games on the projector but 720p and up all looks phenomenal on it (the best I've ever seen 360 or PS3 games look). Also of note is that same projector can do an amazing 3D at 1080p, I've started collecting 3D Blu Rays just for it and the visuals are much better than a 3D TV (also 3D gaming on my PC looks amazing as well).
I've been VERY happy with our X3000i ceiling mounted in my dedicated media room. I don't feel the need to upgrade to the X3100i, but I will be a projector gamer and movie/Netflix watcher for years to come. There's no looking back!

I have tried adding a projector to my gaming setup but ultimately not a huge fan. I finally figured out why. Ceiling and walls were white. I also have OLED and in my gameroom I painted the surrounding walls and drop ceiling black and even my oled is much better. Watching your video I still see you have the issue I had. Cool video! Thanks for sharing some projector excitement! Try running it on a PC, 120hz, 1080p, 4k upscale turnen off. Scanlines in Retroarch (in my tested case Coinops legende 4, for example, the scanlines and input lag improve alot on my x3000i) its a big difference to me. Hope You enjoy the Projector, I would like to recommend you also try out Dolphin in 3d SBS running on PC 60hz, 1080p, 4k, upscaling turned on. Have fun dude!
I was just going to post something similar to this as this not uncommon for Benq monitors as well. I have a Benq monitor that has a firmware update for an audio delay issue but it is not user updateable only factory serviceable. In fact when I contacted them about it Benq replied with a RMA (return merchandise) request which makes me think its more than just a firmware problem.
Im watching cause I bought a black friday "projector" for 50$ lol I haven't tried any gaming on it yet but having a life size Kim Wilde dancing about my wall is a lotta fun!
You did not talk much about the screen. I suspect there is an upgrade path there but I do not know how significant it could be. Want to say I have read that newer screens can benefit projectors with 4k and HDR.
I would always prefer a general tv over a beamer but thats just my own thoughts on this topic .. gaming on a beamer feels not natural to me.. projectors are for movies not for games in my mind. But everyone should take his favourite method to display games. Thanks for the video
I almost exclusively play on a projector. Once you have experienced the immersion of 120plus inches of screen in a dedicated room and decent projector, going to a Tv or monitor is a no go. Size creates an intimate immersion, when you actually have to look up to see the sky as if you really where there. 4k gaming benefits greatly from screen real estate.
HDMI 2.0 is the biggest problem for the price for a projector, its like a step back in class but costs more money then returns on quality of VRR and HDR....Hard Pass..!!!!
When are.we getting the RGB series for dream cast? Something worth watching that is unuque to this channel instead this epidemic of barely relevant content for the past few years!
One cool thing is how Virtual Reality headsets have become much higher resolution and slimmer in form factor and will continue to do so. Eventually getting one of those and playing Retro games inside the device on a giant projector size screen in 4K could be the way to go for many that don't have the space, and it will even offer advantages that you can't get on a projector such as OLED black levels. It's a good alternative for those who still want to experience that spectacle. VR gear is not quite on that level in terms of clarity and comfort just yet imo, but i can see it getting there relatively soon.
I love playing games on my projector, but the lag means I can only play very slow ones. This projector looks lovely, but it looks too big to fit on my desk.
Actually, it looks like this projector has a little brother: TH690ST It only does 1080p, and is a little dimmer - but looks to be about 1/3 the size, and has the same performance characteristics of 120 fps and 8 ms lag. That is like a Goldilocks projector for me!
Very interesting content yet again.

Man, I have a really nice OLED, but wish I had this. Not just for gaming, I'm a huge movie collector and enthusiast as well, but also, I like the idea of this thing being highly portable for future moves.
Awesome video!
What is the name of the game @13:28 ?
Beware of the original x3000i which doesn't have user serviceable firmware at all.
@@jamesarchuleta1137 The update only adds 3d SBS video support. Bluray3d, Playstation 3D, and mister cores that support 3d all work great without it.
What's the name of the PixelArt game that can be seen at 13:24? I've seen it before but forgot totally.

Im watching cause I bought a black friday "projector" for 50$ lol
I haven't tried any gaming on it yet but having a life size Kim Wilde dancing about my wall is a lotta fun!
Which projector stand are you using in this video? The “tripod” looking one
[Coury] Its a video tripod, but I removed the ballhead and boughta projector tray that will screw onto it. Search Amazon for Projector Tripod Tray!
Still hoping to see an RGB Masterclass episode about the Dreamcast someday
Anybody know the name of the run-and-gun game shown at 29 seconds in?
Hard corps Uprising
Ha...i bought a $60 amazon special projector few days ago to see how it does. Damn...2400? No thanks
Nice review! I think that I will save for an LG OLED in the long run though. For that price you can pick up a pretty nice TV.
2K 120FPS be best?
Thanks for This fantastic video. Juste give a try to F-Zero GX and it will absolutely blow your mind.
Really jealous. I like how you describe it as having its own visual appeal much like a CRT instead of being just straight up better or worse.
17:30 - The event happening on screen with the cutesy BG music is very disconcerting... and I LOVE it 😂😂
Playing on a 10 year old Acer 1080p projector. 25ms lag, but the overall experience is awesome. ❤
RS-232 port sells it for me
No HDMI 2.1. No dice 🎲
Thanks for the video. I wish someone would cover CRT projectors for retro gaming properly.
I have my oled for retro games, and I have 4k short throw lazer projector for movies and anime. I say my setup up is peak
❤❤
👍
Someone should try to use this at the movie theatre
I love projectors and I hope you guys keep doing videos on them. Looking forward to upgrading soon.
Anyone else watching this on a much cheaper projector? 😂
Anyone know what the music is at 3:34?
Its from the Neo Geo CD version of Neo Turf Masters
I think you'll find it's pronounced 'benk'.
(it isn't)
Welcome 🎉🎉🎉 it's a fun experience playing on a large screen.
Coury wanted to say "It's F'in awesome!" at the end.
I love playing games on my projector, but the lag means I can only play very slow ones. This projector looks lovely, but it looks too big to fit on my desk.
Actually, it looks like this projector has a little brother: TH690ST
It only does 1080p, and is a little dimmer - but looks to be about 1/3 the size, and has the same performance characteristics of 120 fps and 8 ms lag.
That is like a Goldilocks projector for me!
Which hdmi splitter would you recommend? Cause I really dont want to fry my AV receiver by getting the wrong one
So yeah. Fried my TV from a splitter. Luckily it was old and the same model was extremely cheap. But still
This is an interesting topic that I'm glad is being talked about again.
Here we go! finally, patience wins always. Thank you Coury!
Another fantastic video. So much fun to watch! Thank you for working so hard to get this done.
Why do I love gaming so much 🙇🏻♀️
Welcome to the club. Projector gaming here since 2008. There's nothing like it.
Good luck with lightguns, though.
Och hör mir auf do
