Frame Swap! Putting Fancy Components on a new Velo Orange Rando

- In today's wrench-fest, we're going to move a bunch of fancy, older 10 speed components from a Waterford racing bike onto a new Velo Orange Rando frameset.
As much as I like the Waterford, it is just a bit too big and doesn't match my riding style. Plus I gotta rep the VO!

Very cool to see VO still putting out old school frame designs that make sense no matter what era it is. Definitely a top ten steel frame for the modern sport touring/rando cyclist.

I like the new VO build, but that Waterford frame is beautiful. It deserves something retro, like a Suntour Superbe Pro build, just like the VO deserves silver brakes! 😁
It’s great to see a channel, finally representing my kind of cycling. I’ve been doing this kind of thing for many years. Incidentally, I met Igor in France one year at the Anjou Velo Vintage. He spotted my crazy bars. A nice guy and I still have a photograph on Instagram to remember the moment. It’s a shame, it’s so difficult/expensive to get hold of Velo Orange parts in the UK

I ran into the same problem with the Dura-Ace brakes. Picked some BR-7800s cheap to replace my Tektro R559 on my Rando frame, thinking they'd just fit, but were a bit off. I ended up buying the Velo Orange brakes and am looking forward to getting them.
Creamy housing and brass ends are such a classy looking combo!

Love it beautiful bike. I had a set of those ultegra flight deck shifters on my 1st road bike 20 years ago they where super nice sold it 5 years ago should have kept that bike forever 😂

Great video. I’m hoping I can get some clarification on proper torque settings for the crank arm bolts. I see everything from 18 Nm to 40 Nm on the internet. Enjoy your day my friends.
It really depends on the crank. I never use a torque wrench on square taper, just make it tight. But there are some 2 piece cranks (like Dub) that require a very high torque setting so a wrench is a must.

I’ve named my rando V8. V for Velo and 8 for the 8mm hole I drilled the frame for the rear brake. I might be the only one that has done that 🤩

Maybe I missed what cabling he is using for the rear derailleur but he should not be using brake cable for shifting. Derailleur cable housing is different from brake cable housing that's designed to resist compression that's not an issue with shifting derailleurs.
If you grease the taper the crank will only crack if it has the words " Middleburn RS3 " stamped on it ( little bike mechanics' joke for you there ).
I do the same thing when swapping a bottom bracket cartridge. Installing the non-drive-side first helps align the cartridge with the threads and helps prevent cross-threading.

Those tires look awfully skinny for that bike. Are you planning to swap those out at any point?
I'll swap them out when they are worn out. I'll likely go with the ultradynamico 700x33 or something from Continental. I've been digging their offerings lately.
28C is perfect for unloaded touring. they'll handle the bumps just fine, if you stay on the road, that is.

118mm Botom bracket may be OK with a 130mm OLD rear frame but my older 126mm OLD frame needs something a little shorter

Very nice. Not a fan of the color of the bar tape
grease the taper. they sorta reform every time anyhow so. just match the proper BB to the cranks spec.
10:40 that's not how you size a chain.
Small-small works just as good in practice as big-big. As long as the small-small config pulls a tad of tension off the rear derailleur and there's no rubbing, it will translate to big-big just fine. Benefit of small-small is less fighting with tensions while you 'measure' it.

Good question. The larger 32 and 38mm versions are not tubeless compatible and folks opted to go with something else - so sales 📉
