@bruceboysen1671 0 seconds ago I love Granola bars. I put them on three bikes recently. I put Granola-moose bars on another bike. While they are heavy, they have four different, usable positions, from upright to amazingly aero all the way forward on the cross brace. I’m not particularly concerned about weight, but I would prefer them lighter, maybe out of heat treated aluminum.

I had a quad at one point. Back when there were gear ads in Outside, I ordered the quad gear. It was a tiny chain ring, and it fit into already existing holes, I guess for the granny gear. I was cheap, weighed very little, and not particularly useful, overall worthwhile. The main problem was that it was useful for certain things, but getting into it was difficult. If you shifted early, your feet would be spinning so fast, while at the same time contributing so little that you would fall over, or if you waited to late to shift, you might come to a stop, and fall over. But once you figured it out, it was easy to manage.

Its a shame that they stopped making that vintage cage style as an option for the the triple. I,m a big fan of running 30-42 -53 chain rings ..that way I get away an 8s cassette 13-23 for my road bike. Perfect in wisconsin. Anyway the newer front derailleurs inorder to clear the 42 with the iner part it the cage. The gap for the outer part of the cage is quite large on the big ring. The older style does as little as a 10 tooth jump perfectly. There were 105 and Sora that were the same older cage too for STI. I a pinch routing the cable on the other side of the anchor bolt works too the XT front has been connected to Ultegra STI triple levers for 25 or so years now.

@@Pepin-LB per Soma's website, "The Jawbone A-Type frame is the perfect platform to build drop bar mountain touring and bike packing rig." So it's a mountain touring bike designed for drop bars. I don't know how someone mounted our crank on that frame if it needs mtb cranks. The crank arms would likely hit the chainstays. Triples on older bikes (e.g. my 1991 Trek Single Track mountain bike) can give incredible gear range (590% for me with a 9 speed 11-34 cassette). Certainly more than my 1x bikes. OTOH, my 1x XC bike is definitely faster and more stable off road with it's longer wheelbase, larger wheels and more aggressive tires. The biggest configuration dilemma, IMO, with resurrecting these old bikes is tire choice. To use the lowest gear off road, a more aggressive tread is required (at least for me). But then the high range is kinda useless because knobby tires are slow on pavement. Similarly, to make the bike fast on the street with say an urban tread pattern tires, the bike is pretty limited off road (at least where I live).

I just got a 1993 GT mtb to make a chill dad bike out of. I just assumed I’d convert it to 1x from a triple because that’s just what you do now. After a few rides with the triple it came with I really think I’m going to stick with it. It lets me do whatever I need. I’m pretty shocked how well it operates now that it is perfectly indexed.

There is almost no reason for a triple. I get it for 6, 7,and maybe 8sp gears, but with 10,11, and 12 sp gears, why????? THE Shifiting is horrible. Today even a single ring with a 12 sp cassette can offer everything a triple offered 30-4- years ago.

It's been a while since you've posted this video but here's a question from a newbie. At 3:20 you mention that mountain style and road style cables aren't interchangeable. Do you mean normal, regular breaks by "mountain style"? The ones for flat bar? I'm going to convert a Cube Nulane from flat bar to drop bar and although many shops confirmed my shift and break lever choice to be compatible (Shimano SL-RS700 is the shifter and Shimano BL-RS600 is the break system that I've on my bike, and Shimano GRX ST-RX600 is the one I'm going to buy), your video made me curious to know if those people considered those cables that you show here.
