- Automakers say All Wheel Drive is not just a safety feature, but something that can take the outdoorsy buyer of a crossover, wagon or minivan nearly anywhere. But can it... really? With a budget of just $1,500 each, we brought five old all-wheel-drive vehicles to the George Washington National Forest to see just how well they'd do. No "true" 4x4 or low range gearing was allowed.

Came for the Legacy, stayed for the Town and Country! All you guys needed was a GMT400 Yukon/Tahoe and you'd have had every rig my mom ever used to haul me to hockey practice in one video!
This was epic! One of the best off road videos I've seen, and with extra flare and fun added!
I have a 1995 Chevy Astro with a rear locker that I can bring to that challenge
Half the difficulties these vehicles faced could have been solved by simply mounting some chunkier rubber
Run the biggest, knobiest meats you can fit in to your fender wells without rubbing - reducing wheel spin under power and grabbing more earth in the loose and snotty sections can help.
Obviously, that won't turn a crossover into a "serious" off road machine... but it will surely help.
Even the toyota and the landrover had a rough go of a few segments - better tires would have REALLY helped them.
Oh absolutely! Tires matter a LOT. But we set a firm budget so not everyone could get proper tires as part of the "buy a terrible car" part. The Tacoma and Discovery were budget-exempt as they were daily drivers that friends brought, but both are/were on highway tires for... reasons.

Really like the AWD off road challenge. Great stuff. Sad the X5 wasn't working right. You would have enjoyed it if it had been working correctly. It is useless off road without it's electronics working. With the systems in working order it should be able to do this type of thing th-cam.com/video/ShlbLxISGCE/w-d-xo.html Add some off road tires and its surprisingly good. We took our X5 off road last Saturday with a bunch of of other more off road worthy trucks and everyone, including me, was surprised what it could get through.
Is the X5's traction control turned off? On the first hill it can be seen that traction control and ABS is either off or broken. The X5 will climb many times better with it on and working. Turned it on and enjoy off roading :-)
Yeah, it was disabled. We were fighting the "Trifecta" lights (ABS, DSC, Brake) the whole time Jake owned it. Traced it back to a bad DSC computer but didn't have time to get it fixed before the trip.
