    I really respect your empathetic takes on fast fashion, there really are so many circumstances where it's the only affordable option someone has when not living in areas with thrift/secondhand shops, and how so many people can't find plus sized options while looking for secondhand clothes. It's a complex topic and I appreciate the nuance

    • @wrath0fthelamb
      @wrath0fthelamb ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Agreed.
      I honestly find it sad how a lot of people really harshly judge others just for buying fast fashion. Obviously I understand the judgement if someone’s doing a $100+ haul or something and they obviously have the money to buy sustainable clothing instead. But most people I’ve seen who buy from shein, etc. don’t generally have that much to spend and only get a few items. I myself don’t have a lot to spend so I have bought things from shein.
      I usually get things that I KNOW I’m gonna wear, which I think a lot of other people do as well. And I think that if you know you’re gonna wear it and not just throw it away after a month because it’s “out of style” or something, I don’t see a problem with it.

    Thank you so much for talking on the fact thrift stores are picked clean by resellers. I find it so ironic when people say “why buy fast fashion if you’re poor, just go to the vintage store or depop like me,” totally unaware “vintage” resale shops and sites like depop are way different from thrift stores and the reason why poor people sometime now have to use fast fashion and nothing is at the thrift store for us. It’s outrageous some of the same people who were shamed for thrifting as children are now are shamed for not thrifting as adults

    • @patriciapeters7604
      @patriciapeters7604 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lot of stuff on depop is actually really cheap, especially when posted by legit fellow alternative people. I do agree, and obviously there is still a huge problem on depop w people's pricing and reselling and all that. But you definitely can find lots of cheap stuff if you know how to look.

I moved to England and went to the doc with my first (inevitable) bout with tonsillitis and the doc took one look at my (gonna get graphic here) asymmetrical baboons butt looking mega tonsils and referred me to an ENT. I saw the ENT 2 weeks later who looked at my tonsils and said 'I don't like the look of those. I'd like to take them out.' 2 months later I'm in recovery on an IV drop after just having my tonsils out. It's the basis for the most bizarre country song ever. 'I left my TONSILS in Norwich.'

    What you say Angela resonates so much. I was introduced at the age of 13 to the subculture in 82. At first, I was asked if I liked grave yards, I was taken to the library tp see what books I checked out, I had already spoken out the lyrics to certain songs but was introduced to new music to see if I liked it, then I was taught some dance moves during a visit to a local cemetery, then, taken to a club and introduced to friends. The whole ceremony of getting ready was already a thing. The other goths were as weird and off the wall as I was and all my quirks and weirdness, they loved me and my antics that would have made me the outcast anywhere else. It really was an amazing time. Of course, these days it's unlikely that someone 13 would get taken across state lines and taken into an adult club like that but the same principle applies nonetheless. You just need to find your tribe when you're weird.
    I will say however, that in that era, it was even harder to come by goth music. It was all mix tapes, the first actual album that I ever saw and heard was Juju (which was rare and I don't remember anyone who had a professional studio made album apart from that) other than that... just homemade tapes. It was way harder to get goth music than what you described. Still, I got to hear mixtapes made by DJ's from the Batcave, that's the original Batcave in London which opened in spring of 82. So I suppose that I shouldn't complain however, I would say that in the 90s you had it way easier comared to the early 80s . By the mid 80s it was better in that actual records and albums were easier to come by. It's why Bauhaus being in the movie The Hunger was such a big deal. Goth music was so obscure you see, so to have it in a movie was beyond anyone's wildest dream. We all gathered together to go see an early release of it, 8 of us all tightly packed together in an old and big car from the 60s. One of the other minors shoved a pack of cloves in my face to smell. I remember when she had her moment where she realizedc that she realy belonged too, we wete walking along and she just turned around looking at us realy amazed with that look you know.
    We have come so far from those times of obscurity that it still amazes me, a d those who died I don't think would understand at all how accessable goth is today if they could be brought back.
    One thing they certainly would understand is the sexual abuse and harrrassment however, it may be on modern media and more out in the open but it was a massive issue back then and if we ever meet, I have a lot to tell you Angela as I think you would understand and appreciate what I have to say.

    OMG, I collect cameos as well. The best places I've found many of them are small mom and pop thrift/antique stores. As always thank you for being realistic when it comes to fast fashion. I have shopped Shein a couple of times and have been happy with my purchases because they're things I'll keep for years. The maxi dresses are very boho looking (and I'm also a Free People fan) so I may have to take a look. As far as thrifting goes, for a lot of people working two or more jobs or long hours, they really don't have the time to go from thrift store to thrift store. And upsellers are now coming to predominantly Black and Brown neighborhoods to buy thrift clothes they'll turn around and sell for five times as much. What I appreciate about your channel is that you show baby bats and us elder goths how to shop smarter, not harder. The fact that you emphasize accessories rather than clothes is a game-changer in my opinion. You have one dress yet gave it several different looks just with necklaces and belts.

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cameos are great! You're so right, that's exactly where I'd find mine, the mom and pop thrift shops. Shopping smarter really is the way to go and unfortunately, we gotta do what we gotta do. You're being incredibly conscientious and making good use of your items and taking care of them. So many people get them by the crate load and change seasonally so that they can stay on top of trends even though they're not on any kind of budget. It's so wasteful. I'm seeing the rise in prices in thrift stores and the resellers there first thing on sat mornings filling their shopping carts, taking pics of items as they shop. Meanwhile, you got people out here who need the clothes as part of their daily lives. I'm gonna do some more accessorizing videos to help people take one piece and change it up.

    extra tidbit of advice: as a plus size person with a larger chest I'm always wary of anything with cups. Anything that seems like it has a set chest size in mind I avoid because 9 times out of 10 it's too small, no matter HOW much you size up it just never fits right, and even if it does, it might not a year later (weight fluctuations are normal, y'all). I prefer things with stretch and adjustability. overly structured bodices just never work out for too long.

    [TL;DR]
    Oof, I struggled with my fashion budget in my early twenties too… I worked in biotech in Boston, but the cost of living was so high there that I didn’t have much money left over for clothes. Fortunately I started up cycling Goodwill jeans in my teens with gothy fabric remnants and trims, so it wasn’t hopeless. 😊 Also, sometimes I’d take a couple huge square scarves, sew them together and add a drawstring waistband to make ethereal long skirts. Some of the projects were pretty nice DIY signature pieces, paired with basic black camis and black ribbed plain tops. (PS I adore Iona from Pretty In Pink!!! Fearless quirky fashion queen…❤❤❤ but WHY Andie cut those 2 prom dresses up to make that evil pink monstrosity, I’ll never understand! 😂)
    Polyester is so all over the place these days in terms of fabric variety! I have major sensory issues with fabric, so I always look for the viscose items… SHEIN has some great viscose & linen-viscose blend wide legged, flowy pants with elastic waistbands in black. They won’t go out of style anytime soon. Honorable mention for their very soft holey body stockings/bodysuits, which are AMAZING paired with any of those pants, or a tiered ruffled Betsy Johnson type mini skirt (SHEIN has those in 4 colors too). It’s all comfy enough to be pajamas too, lol. A full coverage black bra works great underneath the body stockings, or you can wear a cami if you want more modesty. And I can’t say enough good things about the viscose and stretch velvet items from the RusttyDustty line. There are some long velvet kimono coats that really rock my socks. Most of the viscose from that line is bright colors and hippie prints (which I personally love for scratching my flower child itch [not THAT kind of itch, ewww 😂), but you can cherry pick some darker witchy goth stuff, including faux wrap pants and ruffled Romani-esque trousers in black. I just had a difficult apartment move, so I’ve been stress-shopping, using SHEIN to bathe my inner teen/20-something self in all the clothes I could never find or afford back then. I’m an apparel addict. 😅 You really look amazing in all the dresses you modeled, like a wealthy 25 year old lead singer….your accessories and layering makes it all look quite expensive and sophisticated. I’m loving the Hope Sandoval reference too…ahhh the memories!! ❤ Always look forward to your videos. Lovely haul Angela, thank you for sharing!! XO

    Wow, very informative video as always! I have stayed clear from SHEIN. I think ASOS is far better than SHEIN as an affordable FF retailer. I always learn something new when watching your videos on fabrics or clothing hauls of things I always wondered about but could never find out before. You are so right about Polyester. Personally I prefer Modal/Rayon/Viscose whenever possible over the polyester mixtures. I am curious if you have an opinion about clothing (specifically skinny jeans fit) from companies like Talbots and Venus, if you've ever heard of them!? It's Fast Fashion, but I've heard some horror stories about the sizes being extra baggy and not flattering (more so with Venus) and am wondering if you ever owned or tried anything on of theirs.

    Another small issue is just how hard it is to find goth clothes. Regarding brands like killstar (which are out of budget,) It's hard to find put-together items. A homemade fishnet shirt and a black top are goth, but so is a cropped sweatshirt with holes, straps, and metal embellishments, which you aren't gonna find in a thrift store. The only place to find something like this is fast fashion (or make it yourself, which a lot of people don't have the time or motivation for.). Only on these sites can you scroll and scroll though goth clothes.
    With this, an easy example is patches and pins. I'm constantly on the lookout for embellishing my favorite bands on my clothes, and on amazon its so hard to find patches of even popular bands like depeche mode, but they non-stop pop up in my feed on temu all the time.

    Hey Angela:) I was wondering if you had any advice for how to deal with harassment as a goth? Ya know the classic yelling insults out of cars and getting hit with shopping carts…I just moved to a new town and the harassment here is the worst I’ve ever had..maybe you have some advice ? I’m a young female so I get the worst of it of course..

      That's unfortunate to hear. I remember my mom came home once and told me about a nice conversation with a goth couple at the store. Mom is definitely not a goth herself, but she complimented their boots and they started chatting. Hopefully you'll meet the kinder crowd in your new town soon.

    I recently bought $60 worth of stuff on shein (with the discounts I payed $40). I didn’t buy any clothing items because I just can’t see myself wearing clothes from shein. I prefer thrift store basics, because it’s way more sustainable and easier for me to determine the quality and if I could wear it for long. But I personally can’t see myself shopping there again, maybe one more time. But over that I don’t see it happening. I’m saving up for a sewing machine and I think everyone in the world should too. Sewing machines are really helpful and a more sustainable way of living. Need a rag? Sew ur old shirt into a rag! Need new underwear? Use scarps to make one! Just many things a sewing machine can do for u!

    I’m not a fan of polyester at all. I do better with natural fibers, one reason why I don’t mind paying a bit more for quality basics and thrifting for good pieces. I recently bought a second hand Armani blazer (linen/silk), and that’s how I like to shop hehe.

    Something else to consider: separates and layering pieces offer the most flexibility! I saw a very pretty lace bell sleeved shrug, and thought that can change to look of any out, whether it's casual or dressy. Also, detachable collars have the same effect. I'm plus size (18-22) and while I'm fairly lucky at thrift stores, I keep an eye out for items that can expand the versatility of items I already own.

    I think it’s rich how you have a lot of commenters on this channel really deride mainstream retail stores when the message clearly is, don’t be an elitist/demeaning dick, and respect that people can and should shop where it benefits them to do so.
    Having said that, I find Ross to be a cheap place to get good stuff, but I mostly end up shopping on Amazon or another online outfitter.
    But I would think that the most goth thing to do is to travel to Romania or Slovakia to barter the blood of virgins for Grelda, the blood magic seamstress witch, to create a custom couture creation capable of luring demons away from hell or instantly depressing the most toxically positive person into irreparable despair.

    Hi Angela, permit me to say something off the topic. Recently I learnt a new meaning for normal. The acceptance of ideas that make no sense. And I continue to think of Normies this way: Individuals who can't or will not think or go beyond superficially and crass commercialist culture. Thank you for saying to not forget where we come from. That is the problem with the problem with the medical system in the USA and spreading worldwide Kentucky Fried Medicine. Fast fashion to me is mainstream fashion that I will end up saying that it does not represent the subculture I like.
