- Here are all of my Mercury Vapor (MV) Street Lights Turning On at once. These are my only street lights I have but I do have a lot of area lights. From Left to Right: Crouse-Hinds L-250, GE M400A1, and Westinghouse OV-25.

Not only that, leds last wayy shorter, they're gonna malfunction and the government needs to change them, again!
Beautiful, love the ballast hum!
The buzz gives me a lonely sleepy feeling; lots of people don't know that the buzz is from the ballast plates or wires coming loose and vibrating; that can be fixed by dipping the ballast in polyurathane and allowing the heat of the ballast in operation to dry it...

i like the humming sound of streetlights!!!
Beautiful lamps, beautiful green light. Although, my heavy duty quadcopter drone makes about the same sound, but it takes off waaaay quicker.
I remember when I was a kid and our neighborhood had these. And in the late 80s/early 90s, they changed them out for the current, orange colored ones. And I think those will soon be replaced with the LED lights that have been put up in other neighborhoods that are close by.

The “L-250” is really a 4th generation OV-25. Crouse Hinds never actually sold it as the “L-250”. Catalogs show they just sold it as the OV-25.
Nice street lights.
In my opinion, all the GE cobrahead fixtures were/are the most aesthetically pleasing designed. Most of the other manufacturer’s products are not as nice looking as the GE’s!

i used to have a mercury vapor light, but the bulb broke, i couldn't buy a bulb, so i bought a metal halide light

Westinghouse OVs used to be the standard in my city... Got a few stashed away too.
@ckobesko You can buy them from car boot sales, eBay, from the engineers who work with the road lighting if you know where there yard is, Lighting wholesalers & sometimes you can find them in refuge dumps Most of the councils are replacing the old street lanterns that work on MV with either HPS or MH ones As for buying Mercury Lamps they are quite cheap ie I know some lighting wholesalers selling MV bulbs for just £2

You will notice a big difference when you replace them with new bulbs
The new bulbs will be much brighter & will emit a slightly pinkie violet glow after the bulbs have burned in they will eventually lose that pinkie glow in time as they get older the older bulbs that have been used a lot will emit a duller light

You really need to get yourself a GE M-1000 in the 700W or 1000W size. You think those things are loud...

I've thrown hundreds of those pieces of shit away at my job. Those Crouse-Hinds fixtures are absolute pieces of shit. The GE luminaires aren't too bad and the Westinghouse luminaires are probably the best. Those loud ballasts are super efficient; however obnoxious sounding. Some of those MV luminaires have been in continual service for 20-30 years in my cities street lighting system. We don't service MV lamps anymore and always take them down in install HPS luminaires unfortunately.
