The only downside to this being a 4K-only camera is that you can't punch in, reframe, and still deliver in full 4K. But considering the overheating issues with the R5, I think that's a reasonable tradeoff. If there's one thing I have learned from Jordan, it's that you can make videos that are more than good enough for TH-cam on just about any camera available today. Focus your attention instead on lighting, stabilization, lenses, and focus. I do think Canon is going to come out with their own XLR adapter or make one of their handles from a pro camcorder compatible with the R5 and R6.

Its like Sony forgot that they designed a screen that could tilt without flipping out, on the A77. Why didnt they implement a similar tilt/flip/rotating screen for the A7Siii? They could even have the flip hinge on the side (instead of the bottom), if they desired.
Looks good, but no waveforms??? The Cine profiles skin tones still looked green(ish) although the Slog 3 profile looked pretty good for skin tones. Maybe they just didn't have the time for better grading skin tones???
12 MP is fine for many photographic situations. It's not what I would want for wildlife or outdoor sports where, no matter how much zoom I have, I always want to crop in more. If you're making huge prints all the time, this is not the camera for you either. But it can still print decently large sizes up to about A3 at 300 dpi if you don't crop. But, for just about everything else, it's more than adequate. The extra dynamic range can help with photography just as much as video.
Is Active Steady Shot broken at 11:20 or so? The footage looks horrible. I got a used 300 bucks Panasonic G80 and the pure sensor stabilization is WAY smoother than what is shown here.
Agree. Maybe Chris is walking like an idiot and you walk a lot better. You actually change how you move when you do a lot of video, so a photographer unused to video would not demonstrate IS at its best. But Panasonic has been regarded king of video IBIS so perhaps your G80 would handle it better.
12MP though? As a hybrid shooter this is a no-go. The Canons still offer better hybrid options (the R6 is also much cheaper). It's nice to see a good review that isn't all hype like most of the TH-cam videos out there.
Thanks for giving a more honest review than everyone on the internet saying, The Perfect Camera (gag me!!); How is only 12mp perfect in any way? The fact it has photo options is just a joke and should be treated as such. My Canon t2i from 2011 has 18mp . The menu system of Sony is garbage and it looks so lame and blocky plus no top of screen readout LCD.
The thing that keeps coming up either in R5 or a7s3 videos are the fact that the R5 is a potential hand toaster and nobody in their right mind would use it for anything other than b-cam
To my opinion the GFX100 is a dream camera. The Hasselblad is a dream camera. The Leica is a dream camera. The Alpha 7 S3 is just a very good low light shooter. Thats all. My personal all round favorite is the Alpha 7 R4. I am just disappointed over the unreasonable high price tag. Jordan....is that an Irish accent .....?
I have the A7s and this is a massive leap forward. However, unless you master the complexities of S-Logs and grading and importing and exporting and codecs, you might as well video with your iphone.
I mainly shoot stills and am not really interested in the video capabilities of a camera. Not so here! The video quality of this Sony is absolutely, utterly awesome!
I'm anxiously awaiting the a7 IV. Hopefully, it will have a lot of these features (4K 10 bit 4:2:2 and 4K 60p in particular) with a more reasonable resolution for photography and a lower price. I know you trade off some low-light performance, but I don't think the a7 III is a poor low-light camera at all. Come to think of it, one of the best reasons to hope for the a7 IV is that the used market will be flooded with more affordable a7 III bodies.
I really wanna see how this works in ultra low-light. I'm doing a lot of nightscape without star trackers and while I'm still happy with my A7iii I'm still hitting its limits quite often. 12MP is more than enough for milky way especially with stitching.
Thanks for the video. When you have more time, I have not seen a demo of how to get 4 channels of audio into this camera. I've seen a shot of the touchscreen showing 4 channels active. But how? The Sony XLR K3M have three inputs, will only output TWO channels. There is a little selector on the back showing that limit.
So just to be sure, according to your table at minute 10:00 , You have the old XAVC S that runs "ok" on the computer and has 60p 10bit 4:2:2 at 200 Mbps - IDENTICAL - to XAVC HS at 60p 10bit 4:2:2 also with 200 Mbps that runs "slower" on your computer. Am I right in assuming that you would go for HS over the regular S because those 200Mbps will be more packed with data (better compression)? This is of course discounting the S-I which is obviously the best compression, but let's say we don't have the space for that. We want good 4k 60p. And we have 2 identical options when it comes to how many minutes you can record to your SD card. So did you notice any change in Quality between S and HS?
Colors look great. Maybe the next a74 will be the perfect hybrid camera for photographers. The Canon R6 looks great but the overheating thing is scary. Sony have delivered with this camera for Video Shooters.Nice work!
How do you have the camera and your video already done? I was only able to preorder mine yesterday but you've already got your in hand and made your sales pitch video.
I think "awful" is a bit harsh, but agree Jordan's Panasonic-shot videos do look nicer. It's *possible* colours may be refined a little by the time the production model is released. It's also *possible* that workflow is a contributing factor, since I'd wager Jordan has a bit more experience working with the Panasonic files by now.
This camera is amazing and is definitely worth it, but I think I'm going to go for the 1DX Mark III. I'm a hybird shooter, and it seems like no image quality matches the 1DX. The color science and "cinematic" look of the 1DX just makes it more tempting. Also, yes I do know the 1DX is more expensive, but worth
When Jordan mentioned the leaner types during interviews it reminded me of this one scene in a 30 for 30 documentary, I think it was the Lakers/Celtics one, where Magic would lean in constantly in his segments and the camera would just lose the focus every time. Must’ve been a pain in the ass to film that lol.
I'd be more excited with live wifi transfer of 1920 x 1080 video to TH-cam than having the ability to shoot slightly better 4K or 8k. So with that said I'll be hanging on to my EOS R and buying glass if I want to step up my quality.
This camera definitely makes Jordan's hair look sharp despite only 12 MP. More review of IQ in the review please and also could you do with some Leica lenses like 35 Lux? please please...

@@kencur9690 Not BM, Panasonic S1H and Canon.
Lee's Channel hmm, why not bm?
@@kencur9690 Oh, I misunderstood your question. I am not familiar enough with BM to say. I was referring too the other footage in this video.
Lee's Channel ok cheers man.
The fact is that r5 is a photography camera with very good video capabilities.
But a7s3 is video camera so stop complaining
I feel the turbo boost gave jordan a buzz cut. Looking great guys.
You guys are just the best in the business! Good balance between information and fun 🤣👍
The menu system of Sony is garbage and it looks so lame and blocky plus no top of screen readout LCD.
great Video. Would you pick it over the S1H?
The thing that keeps coming up either in R5 or a7s3 videos are the fact that the R5 is a potential hand toaster and nobody in their right mind would use it for anything other than b-cam
To my opinion the GFX100 is a dream camera. The Hasselblad is a dream camera. The Leica is a dream camera. The Alpha 7 S3 is just a very good low light shooter. Thats all. My personal all round favorite is the Alpha 7 R4. I am just disappointed over the unreasonable high price tag. Jordan....is that an Irish accent .....?
So DPReview and TCSTV were using same unit (926 markings) for testing and shooting their videos, interesting.
Excellent detail and perspective from Jordan. I enjoyed watching this video.
I have the A7s and this is a massive leap forward. However, unless you master the complexities of S-Logs and grading and importing and exporting and codecs, you might as well video with your iphone.
forget the camera, check out the fresh trim on Jordan! LIT
wow. this is my Next Gear to Buy. i have X-H1 with 50-140mm f2.8 but i need compaq camera like that a7s III
I mainly shoot stills and am not really interested in the video capabilities of a camera. Not so here! The video quality of this Sony is absolutely, utterly awesome!
I'll hope Sony add shutter angle, waveforms and vectorscopes
You guys raise the bar everytime....
What lenses and audio were you guys using to capture this? Audio straight into camera or to a recorder? Looks great...
Chris taking air photography to a whole new level.
Props to Chris for keeping up that no camera bit for as long as he did!
Jordan. I got a question. Given the choice, i say given the choice, would you buy an S1H, the new A7III, or the R5?
How do you have the camera and your video already done? I was only able to preorder mine yesterday but you've already got your in hand and made your sales pitch video.
You guys so rock. Super solid and fun to watch. I’ve got the OG A7s and love it but the autofocus on this would be nice! Thanks guys 😊
Great review. I only trust DPReview.
Thanks for the vote of confidence!
The a7sIII seems like a workhorse for the hybrid world. Consistency is the strong point.
It's a great video camera but who's buying this thinking that it's a great stills camera?
@@antant06 I mean if everything you shoot is never printed large and is mostly viewed on monitors and a TV screen from a distance? It absolutely is.
Is this sample has awful skin tones or am I only one to see this? Maybe faces look green due to s-log3? Your panasonic videos are much better to me
Sony is known for horrible colour reproduction
@@Luke-bt4do it still looks horrible despite "improvements".
Blackmagic is the best for skintones in my opinion
This camera is amazing and is definitely worth it, but I think I'm going to go for the 1DX Mark III. I'm a hybird shooter, and it seems like no image quality matches the 1DX. The color science and "cinematic" look of the 1DX just makes it more tempting. Also, yes I do know the 1DX is more expensive, but worth
Will the menu make its way to A7RIV and A9?
A nice addition to the Sony lineup. The menus look so much better. The bad part is that (once again) they forgot to fix their color science.
You're thinking about color grading. You can make the footage look however you want.
Really impressive, which one is better for stills the A7III or A7SIII?
