To preface, I have no problem with anyone referring to Yamato as he because personally I see them as more non-binary/gender fluid and accepting of multiple pronouns. Arthur confirmed that Oda did not use a gendered pronoun. Arthur just translates it as "him" because in the manga gendered words referring to Yamato are primarily masculine.
I see her or him or whatever as a girl or rather woman that wants to be like oden in all aspects. I'm not sure that classifies as our weird latest brand of gender politics.

What Liam failed to mention is that Artur literally put a disclaimer next to that segment saying Oda didn't actually use a male pronoun in the jp sbs when reffering to Yamato and just that he (Artur) chose to translate it as such.

I think the “son” thing comes from both Yamato and Kaido: Yamato identifies herself as Kozuki Oden, who was a man, while Kaido’s reason is a bit unclear, maybe he wanted a son and that’s why he’s referring Yamato as “Son”. There’s another theory going around claiming that Kaido had another child, a son who died many years ago, and when Yamato was born a girl, Kaido decided to treat her like a son
My theory is that shanks is currently 39 years old and the god valley incident happened 38 years ago shanks was a year old (thus a baby) and after defeating or killing xebec, Roger and Garp found a baby shanks on his ship and Roger took him in knowing that the marines wouldn't let a child of xebec live so Roger took a baby shanks in as he believed a new born child holds no sin (like he told Garp about his son ace). That's why shanks and Rayleigh said it had been many years since they held a baby.
