I'm convinced that I'm one of those sulfur-blind whisky drimkers...

Interesting review. I bought this bottle without checking any online reviews, and was slightly concerned when I saw your video afterwards. However, despite being sensitive to sulphur myself, I can't pick up the slightest hints on the nose. I think you are confusing the Palo Cortado signature with sulphur here. I could not find any other reviews with complaints about sulphur. Personally, I enjoy this bottle quite a lot. It is not your usual flavor profile. Greetings from the Whiskybase, Slainte

Hi Jason & Happy New Year to you...! As an experienced whisky drinker & more recently a now "getting pro" blender, I just don't understand the distillery's choice there hearing to your notes...Having tried some beautiful Palo Cortado finished whiskies like you I guess (me for instance a Deanston 1997 I liked a lot but alas didn't get me a bottle, or a Bunnahabhain 20 yo OB in 2019 or so) it is a shame for me to have ruined it with added other cask type (here Sherry Oloroso if I understand well) while the Palo Cortado has a subtle mlik chocolate influence for me usually...it should be used as a finish of an ex-Bourbon matured whisky imho....To answer you I liked the 12 yo & 22 yo I've reviewed but still wait for something "optimal value" & more generous flavourwise & I had strong expectations for this one, so it is a disappointment to hear this, but also a relief saving money wise ! Cheers !

Hey Jason, nice video as always, thanks. Just my curiosity, so don't you drink wine at all, mate ?

I cannot understand how sulphur is the only way to deal with sherry oxidation and barrel spoiling. I cannot stand sulphur and it seems like the Oloroso sherry barrels are the worst but I have no idea. I have actually started pursuing ex-bourbon maturations or wine finishes in order to avoid the sulphur issue. It's a really unfortunate thorn in the flesh of sherry matured whisky.

I’m VERY sensitive to sulphur as well. Try to avoid purchasing any bottles with any of it. Can you confirm which distilleries are notorious for using these candles? The drams that come to mind from experience are Macallan, Craigallachie, Glenfarclas, Deanston, Glen Garioch, and Springbank. Some are lighter that others, and may even complement the distillate but like you said, it’s difficult to ignore the smell and taste. Cheers, Jason!

as the offensive sulfur for me comes from the barrel and not the distillate - it is not possible for me to name distilleries - sorry.
BTW independent bottlers more often have sulfur casks than the producers
