I love how they found a secluded place in the woods and lead down a few tracks over a period of a few days or so. Alex Lifeson: “Neil had worked on the lyrics from an idea that had come from a friend of ours, Pye Dubois (Max Webster). He expanded on that whole theme of rebellion and instinct... Most of ['Moving Pictures'] was written by all of us at the same time, in the room jamming with an idea and everybody going from there. What we ended up with was, I think, some of the strongest and most enduring material that we’ve ever written. There are a lot of songs on that record that reached a really high standard... They connected with a bigger audience. But there was also something about the sound of that record that resonated with people.” Neil Peart: "I really think we started to bring it together a bit with 'Permanent Waves', but particularly 'Moving Pictures' and from then on... ['Tom Sawyer'] finds us at a time of such confidence that we were learning to make a song that was only six minutes instead of 12, 15, and use the same standards of arrangement. The drum is so detailed, but when we go into the middle to the odd time part, it was improvised. I got lost and I punched my way out of it and somehow came back to the one. And that improvisation became a new part. It's one of those key parts that I love and it was absolutely a mistake that I just got lucky and got out of."
So cool to hear complimentary assessments from specialists in other music genres. Thanks for taking a listen and for the kind words for my favorite band. Tom Sawyer is one of the hallmark pieces in a volume of music that spans 4 decades. Spectacular musicianship and creativity. Long live the Godfathers of prog rock!
Rush is a legendary Canadian band. My cousin worked at the studio in Morin Heights where they recorded this song and their albums. True Canadian gold. Neil is the GOAT in my opinion. 🎸🇨🇦❤️
Neil Peart is pretty much on everyone's list as a top 1 or 2 drummer in the world. Geddy Lee is in pretty much everyone's top 5 or 10 top bass players in the world. And Alex Lifeson is an amazing guitarist. Welcome to RUSH guys. There's a ton to explore. And Corey, if you like the drumming - listen to Subdivisions from RUSH. Neil said it was the most difficult song he had to drum to.
There has never been a band like this! They were masters of their craft. They played live the same way they played here, perfect. Over 40 years and 19 studio albums and they did it their way. Never compromised their musical integrity. Miss them so much! RIP Mr. Peart...
Rush is prog rock royalty. The changing time signatures and multiple instruments played are amazing. Neil Peart, The Professor, on drums is sadly no longer with us. But his mother actually asked him once why he doesn't ever smile when he's playing. His reaction was, Mom, this stuff is hard!
I'm gonna turn you fellas onto one of the funkiest songs from Rush's catalogue. It's got an amazing groove to it, and it's a live performance, so you'll get to see what they look and sound like on stage. It's 100% an instrumental though, and the bassist/singer/keyboardist, Geddy Lee, goes off on the bass line at the end. It's from a bit later in their career, so you'll get to see what they look like after aging. I think you guys will like it a lot. Enjoy! A Canadian here. I have been a hard-core Rush fan for a solid half-century now, enjoyed watching your reaction to this 3-man powerhouse. I saw them live in Calgary in about 1989, they are incredible composers, writers and musicians. RIP Neil Peart, I wish Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson all the best and thank them for the countless thousands of hours of musical enjoyment. Anyways, welcome to the Rush rabbit hole, gentlemen, 2112, Spirit of Radio, The Trees, etc, etc, you still have about 50 yrs of stellar progressive rock to discover from this band!
This is a very deep rabbit hole, gentlemen!! I love their studio stuff but to see them live is something else. These 3 are all masters in their field. When you see them live, you go, how is all this music coming from 3 guys? Geddy Lee is the vocalist, bass player and keys/synth. At times, he does all 3 things on stage at once, (using foot pedals, of course). Alex Lifeson is the guitarist who also uses foot pedals for synth and other sounds. Niel Peart, (pronounced like you would the word, ear). Peart. He is a master percussionist. Anything you can hit with a stick, he's got and he plays it. He writes almost all their lyrics and is know as "The Professor" for his very deep knowledge of wide ranging topics that he puts to song. Not everything is deep - like Tom Sawyer, here is not deep at all. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago from cancer. Id love to request a live song from them called, Working Man. It's in Cleveland in 2011. These guys are well into their 50's at this point and they absolutely blow the roof off of that place. I really hope you to choose to watch it sometime soon. Peace and love, fellas. th-cam.com/video/fEZDFPsL50M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=csIe6rzKUN-_xWvE

If you ever get the chance to react to video clips of Rush during their “Exit.. Stage Left” concert and react to songs like “Freewill”, “Trees”, “Xanadu”. “YYZ”…you’ll be amazed even more at how much these 3 legends put into their songs and concert…👍😎
@@Derideo totally agree 1000%… and for those that know side B, track/song 1 of Rush’s ‘Moving Pictures’ album, “The Camera Eye” should be played at volume level 11 for maximum enjoyment…👍😎🔥

Geddy Lee - Bass guitars, Oberheim polyphonic; OB-X; Mini-Moog; and Taurus pedal Synthesizers, vocals Alex Lifeson - Six and twelve string electric and acoustic guitars, Taurus Pedals Neil Peart - Drums kit, timbales, gong bass drums, orchestra bells, glockenspiel, wind chimes, bell tree, tubular bells, crotales, cowbells, plywood, wood blocks, triangles, tympani, and Gong!
Great reaction! I’d recommend jumping deep with Rush by doing “Working Man” live from Cleveland” Reggae, rock, funk, hard rock all in one live performance, one song. Amazing.
This is my essay to people who may not know RUSH or who Neil was professionally and his contributions to the art of drumming and lyrical writing! Enjoy! RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary
Rush was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the same year as Public Enemy. It was great watching Flavor Flav rock out in the audience as Rush played its short set. There's a Rolling Stone Magazine article about the night entitled "Rush, Public Enemy Get Emotional Backstage at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony" but I'm too cheap to subscribe so that I could cut and paste it here... ; )
Check out the snarly, growly, guitar work by Alex, and Neil’s drum perfection, and Geddy hitting every note and Bass-line in “By-Tor and the Snow Dog”. Early Rush is where the magic lives. You can’t imagine it til’ you experience it. Rush, man. They have no equal.
It's definitely best that you "don't know what they look like ;)" But you might also recognize "Limelight" if you ever watched the great comedy "I Love You, Man" with Paul Rudd and Jason Seigel. I never liked Rush or most prog-rock in general, but Tom Sawyer was kind of undeniable.
Yeeeeesssssss 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Edit: Corey you looked like me the first time i heard this song, grinning from ear to ear😆 May I suggest your next Rush song be La Villa Strangiato. I think the 1978 or ‘79 video versions will give you best sound. It’s a complete journey through a dream land and not one word is sung the whole song. Just pure musicianship.
NEIL PEART’S NARRATION ON EXIT STAGE LEFT DVD: There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know! That’s one of the things I like most about the road that feeling of standing in the hall when the doors open feel the excitement bursting into the hall. I must admit I feel very comfortable playing live a lot! A very modern urban setting for that Tom Sawyer mentality and a very carefree stride and a very self-possessed kind of air. Xanadu: The question we tend to ask the most often is WHAT IF? I think of you had to simplify a motivation or simplify a moving force in our music that would probably…suffice! Red Barchetta: Well it seems to me a car is one of those handy metaphors and volumes have been written about the sociological and cultural impact of the car and what it represents but it also has a very fundamental sensual feel and it’s a metaphor for sexuality and freedom. We’ve certainly tried to guide everything by the principles that were interested in and the freedom of choice and the material we’ve been playing and expression of music that we found to be exciting would excite other people as well. If the songwriting is important and playing really well on stage is important it’s gonna make the difference between feeling good or not feeling good when I walk off stage feeling that I played as well as I can or as close to well as I can then I feel very satisfied and good for what you have done. YYZED: I think there is a very strong relation maybe not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and phrasing and the rhythm of verse especially is very strongly rooted in the same syncopation as drums the same patterns of thinking overall work for me with words as much as they do with drum beats.
Oh wow!!! this is a nice surprise ☺this song is one of my favourite from Rush. Another legend Canadian band and would love your reaction on is the *Tragically Hip New Orleans is Sinking - Official video* I always enjoy your reactions and thoughts on songs, love you guys all the way from Canada 🍁❤ Music is beautiful 🎵🎶
I think the next hit should be The Spirit of Radio. Either do the official (40th anniversary) video released a few years ago (only a short time after the drummer/lyricist's untimely death from brain cancer) or the TH-cam video entitled "Best Intro Ever," which consists of a medley of older songs leading into The Spirit of Radio, live from the R30 Tour stop in Frankfurt.
It is Rush's best-known song. It's a great song, but not their best song. But don't ask me which song that is, because I will never be able to pick one. If you really want to see Rush live at their best, you should check out Rush Xanadu live in Montreal during the Exit Stage Left tour. It's widely recognized as Rush's best performance, but there are so many great ones. If you asked me, I would say it's the best live performance of anyone, ever. So complex, so refined, so... perfect.

The drum is so detailed, but when we go into the middle to the odd time part, it was improvised. I got lost and I punched my way out of it and somehow came back to the one. And that improvisation became a new part. It's one of those key parts that I love and it was absolutely a mistake that I just got lucky and got out of."
YYZ live in Rio or Trees
So cool to hear complimentary assessments from specialists in other music genres. Thanks for taking a listen and for the kind words for my favorite band. Tom Sawyer is one of the hallmark pieces in a volume of music that spans 4 decades. Spectacular musicianship and creativity. Long live the Godfathers of prog rock!
RUSH is for EVERYBODY! 40 years of magical music you can listen over and over to again!
Rush is a legendary Canadian band. My cousin worked at the studio in Morin Heights where they recorded this song and their albums. True Canadian gold. Neil is the GOAT in my opinion. 🎸🇨🇦❤️
It’s a shame that LeStudio caught on fire and is no more - there certainly were some gems that were recorded there
@@roberthussey595 April Wine recorded there too.
Neil said it was the most difficult song he had to drum to.
from the creator of people playing air drums. rip
One of the greatest rock bands to come out of Canada 🇨🇦
I'm gonna turn you fellas onto one of the funkiest songs from Rush's catalogue. It's got an amazing groove to it, and it's a live performance, so you'll get to see what they look and sound like on stage. It's 100% an instrumental though, and the bassist/singer/keyboardist, Geddy Lee, goes off on the bass line at the end. It's from a bit later in their career, so you'll get to see what they look like after aging. I think you guys will like it a lot. Enjoy!

Tom Sawyer was my introduction to Rush in the early 80s. This and Limelight are my favorite.

Ollie looks more grumpy this episode
Yeah, he was very subdued. I thought he was gonna say he didn’t like the song. 🤔
I swear Ollie is only happy when he finds a song he hates. When he does like a song it's generally "yeah, it's alright" with a look of disappointment! 🤣
😂
This was our _anthem_ in the early 80s.
Rip to the Professor!!! Pure greatness🎉❤
Another great reaction video…appreciate your guys commentary/feedback.👍
So down for this rabbit hole.
The Trees is pure universal brilliance. Red Barchetta and Vital Signs also a must listen.
@@Derideo totally agree 1000%… and for those that know side B, track/song 1 of Rush’s ‘Moving Pictures’ album, “The Camera Eye” should be played at volume level 11 for maximum enjoyment…👍😎🔥
Limelight and the Trees are two of my all time favourites! I grew up listening to RUSH, was 14 when they released Tom Sawyer, so many amazing songs!
Loved it, well done gents!
RUSH "YYZ" live in Rio a must do reaction
Rush is a killer band...I've been a fan since the beginning...you guys are hip hop orientated...check out the tune ROLL THE BONES .. there's a surprise for you hop hop guys 😁
Geddy Lee - Bass guitars, Oberheim polyphonic; OB-X; Mini-Moog; and Taurus pedal Synthesizers, vocals
Alex Lifeson - Six and twelve string electric and acoustic guitars, Taurus Pedals
Neil Peart - Drums kit, timbales, gong bass drums, orchestra bells, glockenspiel, wind chimes, bell tree, tubular bells, crotales, cowbells, plywood, wood blocks, triangles, tympani, and Gong!
COREY rules!!!! i love his reaction--glad he appreciates everything Ive appreciated since getting the cassette in 1981!!!!

☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥🔥😎
Rush is amazing live! I recommend checking out 'Between the Wheels' live from the R30 tour in Germany. Heavy-sounding for a 3-person band!
Yeeeeesssssss 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Edit: Corey you looked like me the first time i heard this song, grinning from ear to ear😆
May I suggest your next Rush song be La Villa Strangiato. I think the 1978 or ‘79 video versions will give you best sound. It’s a complete journey through a dream land and not one word is sung the whole song. Just pure musicianship.
NEIL PEART’S NARRATION ON EXIT STAGE LEFT DVD:
There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know!
YYZED:
I think there is a very strong relation maybe not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and phrasing and the rhythm of verse especially is very strongly rooted in the same syncopation as drums the same patterns of thinking overall work for me with words as much as they do with drum beats.
Oh wow!!! this is a nice surprise ☺this song is one of my favourite from Rush. Another legend Canadian band and would love your reaction on is the *Tragically Hip New Orleans is Sinking - Official video* I always enjoy your reactions and thoughts on songs, love you guys all the way from Canada 🍁❤ Music is beautiful 🎵🎶
You just witnessed the GOAT of drummers. The GOAT of trios and one of the greatest rock bands ever. Rush has 40 plus years of music like this.
So complex, so refined, so... perfect.
Fellas, first of all, Rip to Rush's Drummer Neil Peart the best drummer in Rock History!!! Fellas U won't believe this but in World Class Championship Wrestling, "The Modern Day Warrior" Kerry Von Erich used Rush Tom Sawyer's song for his ring entrance.
Can you guys do a reaction to the Rush song/video to “Subdivisions “? You’ll love the message in the lyrics. There is also another banger from Rush called “Limelight “. The video was recorded from the same studio as “Tom Sawyer “
Love Rush, have all of their Albums. Seen them Live.
I think Tom Sawyer is one of the worst songs they made but it gets lots of publicity. Sad.
Cough cough... Could have heard a pin drop boys..... What's going on? Who's feelings r hurt now hehehehe😊
So glad you guys finally discovered Rush..they have a 20 plus album catalog and i cNt wait to see you do more. Xanadu studio version maybe next or Yyz or The Spirit of Radio
What most poeple do not know (aside from Rush fans) is that Drummer Neil Peart wrote 99% pf all the song lyrics. He was a bit of a poet besides being one of the best drummers that ever lived.
❤❤❤🎇 yo yo yo you know this rabbit hole is so much greater than the pieces of their art check out the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the last song this rabbit hole is so deep I don't even know if you're ready for it how about that and I don't know why your third man is complaining because he just witnessed rock and roll at its best name me a better drummer and yes I am one finest musicianship ever to hit and Grace Our Lives hollaback guys
Xanadu from Exit stage Left live. This is the best live performance you will ever witness. These three are extraordinary musicians and you see that for yourself. And Spirit of Radio studio version.
Saw them at the Forum in Montreal in 1981. Ticket price: $9.50
Mark Twain wrote Tom Sawyer ... Huckleberry Finn was a character in the book ..
"Why am I here" Who's the 12 year old hoodie with attitude on the bottom? That guy's poison for a podcast....
Rush is "thinking mans" rock. most of their lyrics have deep meanings behind them. check out "Working Man" it's the first song that broke the US and went mainstream making them a household name. the rock version not the Reggae version they did much later
I grew up in Toronto Ontario and saw Rush live 2 times at the old Maple Leaf Gardens back in the 80’s. These guys are mind-blowingly talented! RIP Neil (The Professor).
Fellas, U guys have to react to Neil Peart's Drum Solo!!! Bad ass drummer. Check it out.
If your going to cover another song from RUSH, I would like to suggest "the trees"
I love watching people enjoying Rush for the first time!
Grandad is freaking out, Dad is kind of enjoying it, son is trying to pretend he's enjoying it. It's a generational thing.
