      @Project Farm believe it or not, Deep Woods Off mosquito spray instantly removes the yellowing oxidation from polycarbonate lenses. I would recommend trying this step first to remove the discoloration then polish and follow up with protective coating. Some window tint shops provide clear protective skin to protect lenses as well. Maybe a combination of these may work better than the old school “Miyagi” methods.

      Hey get a kit that has the three different grits of sandpaper and the polish/clarifying compound. Once you're done it's really important to apply the lens protectant that meguiars makes. Otherwise, they'll be yellow again in a month.

    • @ncc74656m
      @ncc74656m 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had an excellent experience with the 3M kit, and highly recommend it. Once you finish the full polishing though, I would recommend getting an acrylic clear coat with high UV additive spray paint to go over them (unless you can get a 2k clear coat with UV protectant for a reasonable price in your area) before applying any chemical protectant over the top of all of it. It'll give your lenses the best fighting chance.
      If you hope to keep the car for a long time without repeating it, you should also look into a clear overlay for them like a clearbra or something to help absorb future rock damage.

    As a professional detailer, I do a ton of headlight restorations, so this was a lot of fun to watch. Sandpaper is definitely a perfect example of getting what you pay for. Just like your battery test, where the cheap batteries were so bad, they ended up being one of the most expensive to use. The time saved alone is worth the extra cost for 3M sandpaper. It not only cuts efficiently, it's very durable, their Trizact pads last *forever* used properly. Big thank you! 👍👌✌

      Not the original poster but, I use 3m sandpaper to wetsand the lens, then I use meguiars m105 with a DA. I just use Turtle wax seal n shine as a protectant

    • @jdisdetermined
      @jdisdetermined 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @tan j maz similar to above poster, I generally start with 800 or 1000 grit sandpaper by machine, then 2000, and 3000, with a hand block for control, I always sand wet for efficiency. I finish with a rotary polisher, wool pad and compound and polish, but a DA works too, rotary just does the job a bit faster. I seal them with 2k clear coat, or a ceramic coating, depending on the budget.

      I can say my experiences with abrasives are similar with woodworking and the occasional metalworking. 3M is a consistent top contender for quality and the rate which you chew through consumables easily pays for itself, even if your time changing them out is not a cost factor. I wouldn't be surprised if that Sylvania kit outsourced the abrasives to 3m or SIA and won this competition thanks to the protective coating filling most of the scratches.

      Tbh testing the kits on actual headlights would have been a much more accurate comparison to what you should expect on your own car, naturally hazed by nature. On actual headlights that have hazed like crazy, by natural means, the turtle wax kit would have not end up last. Maybe closer to first. Always aim for real world application to get the best comparison.

      Sometimes the best way to do something is to just do it and get it over with. It should be obvious what to do with the kit without instructions. Use the lowest grit sandpaper with water, and ascend in grit count until you can't go any higher, then polish with included compound. It's pretty universal. I use UV resistant, non-yellowing spraycan clearcoat and polish it afterward to protect it.

Considering that nearly everything takes longer to do as a older woman with severe asthma, I was able to restore both headlights on our 2011 Camry in about 2 hours using the 3M kit with my cordless drill and applying 2 coats of Meguiers clear UV protectant spray. 😀 There's even plenty of kit left to do the headlights again. Hubby is quite impressed with the results as the headlights look like new - which makes the old, chipped paint look more sad now Lol😆 Still, we saved a lot of $$ and if I can successfully use this with kit no previous experience, almost anyone else can too! 👍

I don't remember seeing Sylvania's kit or I completely disregarded it. It's surprising to see that it outperformed everything that uses a drill with various grit levels. I love the 3M kit. I've done probably 5 pairs of headlights with it (you don't need to use much compound) and it's finally wearing out. The drill makes it easier, but you do have to mask off any nearby paint. You're correct about the UV protection. They have dulled in about a year here in Texas. I'll have to get some of that UV protection.

You don't want this snuff in your lungs, Maguires only needs one coat and drys fast, Don't spray in direct Sun!! And remember nothing is permanent when it comes to headlight restoration, The difference is Maguires is easier to remove than 2k clear for example good luck!!
