  • Until this ride the most I had ever ridden in my velomobile was 257km. This time I set out not only to ride even further, but also to take along a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, sleeping bag liner, repair kit, cameras, tripod, camera mounts and food and water.
    Assuming I would make it to my destination, Christchurch, I would have to bike back only two days later. I had no idea whether I could really even do this.
    I took my velomobile for a test run the day before, and it seemed like it would be possible. So I packed my velomobile and set out. This video shows a bit about my trip bike tour to Christchurch, I hope you enjoy it.
    Thanks for Watching

    Wow great to see some of the Kaikoura improvements with the nets over the top of the road. Riding in the tunnel would have been great fun.

    - 24 km... towards the Quattro Vello I have driven a low racer unferd and it was really quick and not dry do you maybe know where I can find velomobile to test drive
    already build a front wheel drive recumbent single gear backpedal break Well it keeps me fit on the on the hills

      Thanks for the comment. I don't know of any places in New Zealand where you can test ride a velomobile. Europe and USA seem to have this though.

    Great to see your trip and the DF went well. How did you find the traffic and driver behavior? That is a busy road. In my travels around NZ I thought the narrow roads with few substantial shoulders would make a bicycle or velomobile trip an adrenaline roller coaster. So many people seem to be in a race these days. Hope you post the return. Really enjoy the scenic points shown. It is a lovely country. I'd be there now if it was not for Covid. Cheers, Ray 🇨🇦

      Hi a c, Thanks for leaving a comment. The traffic was busy with lots of people enjoying the beach during the holidays. Most drivers were very supportive and conscientious. I really only hsd one or two agressive drivers, but I wasn't too fased by them.
      I considered going on a few rural roads to get of the state highway every now and then, but you never know if they will be sealed. I don't like taking the df over unsealed road.
      I got lots of the usual toots and people taking pictures of me or staring out the window. One or two tried to tell me stuff as they were passing, but all were positive as far as I could tell.
      Hope you can make it back to NZ one day.
      Ride safe

    Marnix, can you tell me what kind of motor you're using? i can't find it.
    Did you do the instalment by yourself or let you do it?
    also did you reuse the cracks and the rings?
    I also ride a DF XL but the +10% hills are killing me, my speed is dropping from 35km/h to 8km/h.
    i love your videos

      I use a bafang 350w motor at 36v. It isn't great for high speed with my configuration, but I'm content riding about 47kph on a flat, and down hill I get up to stupid speeds anyway. I love the motor when going uphill. Some people put in 500w or even 1000w motors, but that is illegal here in New Zealand. Thanks for the question.

      @kiwi_velonaut  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh and I had help from a local bikeshop with the install I changed my front ring to a larger 52t, this gives me nice speeds in most gradients.

      @@kiwi_velonaut I would love that 47km/h as a cruising speed.
      Here in Belgium is a 25km/h max support, no need for a license.
      If you got support till 45km/h you need a license.
      It doesn't make a different which motor you use, if you use a 1000w motor and don't exceed the 25km/h it's still considered legal

      Hi Peter, at the moment I charge my batteries three at a time from any standard new zealand power socket. From empty to full takes several hours. Hope this helps, thanks for the question.

    I am interested to get one myself as a separate mode of travel due to rising prices in fuel. How did you convert the Velo to add an electric motor?

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Simon, I added a bafang middrive where the where the cranks are. I ended up using bmx cranks to fit the motor and have plenty of foot space. Inter City Bike sold me the bracket I needed to fit the motor, and a local bike shop also added a motor off button for better gear changing.

    How and where did you charge your batteries?

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I stayed at a camp site, and charged my batteries there using my battery chargers, it took a few hours for them to charge, because I used them all up. Does that answer your question, or did you mean something else?

    • @travelsofacycles1584

      @@kiwi_velonaut yes that's what I wanted to know. Thats good news as there are so very many campground in your country. Thanks I saw that were charging stations for cars on Google maps it would be great if we cycle's could use them but are chargers don't have the same size plug that cars have. Also saw a video about a bike charging station's somewhere around Christchurch or maybe it was Auckland Thanks for the reply

    Haven't seen any previous videos. What size motor is in your velo?

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi J Jackson, I use a bafang 350watt motor, however it had to be detuned to 300w to make it legally classed as a bicycle here in New Zealand. Thanks for the question.

      @@kiwi_velonaut Thanks. I wondered if what the limitations were there.

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah 300watt is ample to get good speed (50kph on a flat). Once I get to a cadence of about 80, the motor really doesn't help any further. It becomes a balancing game of top speed vs hill climbing gears available. I use a 52tooth front chainring. I suppose I could get a much bigger one, and then my top speed woul go through the roof, like you can see in many other velomobile videos. However I often need to ride uphills, and that's why I have kept my front chainring at 52t.
      A solution could be to add an internal hub gear system like the rohloff or pinion, but that would require a bit of engineering I don't have the skills for yet.

      Hi Urpo Taskinen, it was my first attempt at using the velomobile to go camping with. A hammock would certainly have been lighter, however I stayed at a campsite in Christchurch not really a place suitable to hang a hammock.
      Where do you normally hang your hammock when you go camping?

      @@kiwi_velonaut The good thing with hammock is that one does not need to place it on the ground. Two advantages it will not be wet and one avoid ticks, those small blind spiders that can give both borelia and TBE.
