300km Electric Velomobile Camping Trip - Cycling to Christchurch and back with electric assist
Until this ride the most I had ever ridden in my velomobile was 257km. This time I set out not only to ride even further, but also to take along a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, sleeping bag liner, repair kit, cameras, tripod, camera mounts and food and water.
Assuming I would make it to my destination, Christchurch, I would have to bike back only two days later. I had no idea whether I could really even do this.
I took my velomobile for a test run the day before, and it seemed like it would be possible. So I packed my velomobile and set out. This video shows a bit about my trip bike tour to Christchurch, I hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for Watching

How far can my electric velomobile go - a range test of three different levels of e - assist.

I set out on some test rides to see how far I could ride at three different levels of assist. I rode until the battery level display started to indicate that the last of the battery was almost depleted. I expected to be able to ride a little further as the assist level lowered, and that my rides would prove this. I know that there are many things that affect range, but I figured since most thin...

Rainy Day - cycling in my velomobile in Auckland. Plans for large ride squashed by weather.

    I'e subscribed and have been following your adventures with enthusiasm fro here in America. As a person considering the purchase of a new Velomobile at the age of 82, I am definitely interested in e-assist! Can you provide me with a list of e-assist manufactures who can provide me with the necessary hardware and software necessary to accomplish this objective? I am seriously thinking about the European Bulk or quad carbon fibre machines. Thanks, Dave

      Hi David, there are many e-assist manufacturers, I would recommend talking with a local bike shop, because if I remember correctly, the USA states have different laws to Europe and where I live. For example I think you are permitted to have up to 500 watt assist. Then you need to decide if you want hub motor in the wheel; these can be set up to provide regenerative braking. Or a motor at the pedals like the Shimano steps. Also I would recommend asking the velomobile manufacturers of the models you mentioned. I spoke with several before buying the df model, and most of them spoke English. They will know which types of e-assist systems are compatible with their velomobile models. Good luck with your potential new velomobile.

    Have a bafand 250w motor. At a cadence of 70rpm or below, it uses 15 amps, but 5 amps at optimal cadence of 81. So more efficient to go to a higher assistance level if needed to maintain 81 rpm. I have the motor on an ICE Sprint X 26 Tour trike. After 60 miles I recharge the 36V 15AH battery, at which point it is still showing 2 out of 4 lights worth of charge, running at max assist.

    The interesting one for me is the climb, second is getting off the mark. Lets say you put out 200 watts. What altitude can you expect to climb at a given speed, for a given battery size? ie. overcome the disadvantage. Second what's the recharge time? So lets say, 4 hours morning, 4 hours afternoon, can you recharge in an hour over a lunch stop?

    On maximum assist, you are "ghost" peddling. I do it all the time with my recumbent trike. I have a High Voltage BBSHD 72-volt system with a single rear gear 42 tooth sprocket. Even at power level 3, I can exceed 65 kilometers per hour, so I normally use level 1 or 2. It looks good to ghost peddle even though I'm not really accomplishing anything, but people are definitely friendly and wave to me, so it's all good. I normally ride at about 25 to 35 k.p.h. so as not to attract unwanted attention. Be safe out there!

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, for regen you normally use a hub motor. To use a hub motor on a single side mounted rear wheel is not adviseable due to the stress it would place on the mount. However a silver lining is that I tend to hill hop on quiet hilly roads.

      @@rockrl98 I haven't felt any vibrations at high speed (60-90kph). I don't really take it on rough terrain, because it isn't designed for that. • @rockrl98
      @rockrl98 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiwi_velonaut what do you reckon is the reason it's slow on gravel, rolling resistance, suspension? I'm dreaming of building a large wheel hybrid velo, with some off-road capability, and a very illegal electrical system, as I'd want it to go 25 kmh over the worst of hills(70% is hilly/mountainous here) I'd be counting on it being at least as efficient as a normal MTB on flat terrain,

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience on gravel/metal road the main reason for being slow is lack of traction. If you had a velo with front and rear drive, the traction would increase. Another reason I went slow over that terrain was because of all the stones hitting the bottom of the shell making a lot of noise. But yeah, if you could overcome traction, and you had a powerful electric motor in there, the velo could be fast on gravel road, and it could easily go faster than 25kph (due to the motor). Trisled, a company in Australia, puts out youtube videos about offroad recumbents that they built; might be worth a look. Good luck with uour dream velo.

      Yeah 300watt is ample to get good speed (50kph on a flat). Once I get to a cadence of about 80, the motor really doesn't help any further. It becomes a balancing game of top speed vs hill climbing gears available. I use a 52tooth front chainring. I suppose I could get a much bigger one, and then my top speed woul go through the roof, like you can see in many other velomobile videos. However I often need to ride uphills, and that's why I have kept my front chainring at 52t. A solution could be to add an internal hub gear system like the rohloff or pinion, but that would require a bit of engineering I don't have the skills for yet.

    Great to see your trip and the DF went well. How did you find the traffic and driver behavior? That is a busy road. In my travels around NZ I thought the narrow roads with few substantial shoulders would make a bicycle or velomobile trip an adrenaline roller coaster. So many people seem to be in a race these days. Hope you post the return. Really enjoy the scenic points shown. It is a lovely country. I'd be there now if it was not for Covid. Cheers, Ray 🇨🇦

      Sorry for not letting you know. Is your trike ready already? I'd still be keen to ride along if you decide to do a big trip one day.

    Wow great to see some of the Kaikoura improvements with the nets over the top of the road. Riding in the tunnel would have been great fun.

    I see you use a tent. I use a hammock.

      Hi Urpo Taskinen, it was my first attempt at using the velomobile to go camping with. A hammock would certainly have been lighter, however I stayed at a campsite in Christchurch not really a place suitable to hang a hammock. Where do you normally hang your hammock when you go camping? Thanks for the comment by the way.

      @@kiwi_velonaut The good thing with hammock is that one does not need to place it on the ground. Two advantages it will not be wet and one avoid ticks, those small blind spiders that can give both borelia and TBE.
