Marnix's Electric Velomobile- I talk about my old bicycle, solar panels & speed compared with e-bike

  • Hi, here is a video that was kind of made to be a bit of a trailer for my channel. I went on a ride around the neighborhood, and then thought I'd head into the city and find the Rocketlab buildings. I never actually got there, but made video along the way.
    In the video I talk about my velomobile and the electric assist. I also make some comparisons with my experience on normal upright bicycles, e-bikes, velomobiles (not assisted) and electric velomobiles. I also quickly mention about some of the things I was hoping to have on my velomobile, but didn't, like solar panels and pinion gearbox.
    Anyway, enough chatting in this, it's easier just to watch the video. I hope you enjoy it, and as always
    Thanks for Watching

    Mooi Man! (Dutch Heritage? will not be the first to ask,,). Love your video's. I am the rider of DF XL 91 Traffic Yellow in the Netherlands. I have been car-less for over a year and just like you wanted to travel in Holland by bike wherever I wanted. I had been dreaming about a VM for years and tried a Quest some ten years ago in Dronten NL. Loved it then, but in those days I rowed a lot and bought a few skiffs...and had a car at my disposal. Things changed, I turned 59 and suddenly I thought: it is now or never and I got the yellow DF, second hand, in mint condition from a nice chap who lives in neighboring town! Since feb 1 2021 I covered some 4000 km's and I just love the experience. Visited my dad who lived in Zuid -Limburg (200 km ride), a friend on the coast in the West (90 km) and discovered wonderful stuff in my region which I otherwise on my race- bike would not have seen. I am on Strava: Arjen Meurs and Komoot www.komoot.nl/tour/359060741
    I do not miss an electric assist as the Netherlands is wonderfully flat in most areas.
    I have watched many of your video's and they helped me choosing the DF. Always wear a helmet but no Flag flying... Castles, mansions and other heritage sites are often my goals but the Flag is one step beyond... Would love to ride in New Zealand once in my DF but getting there in a velomobile is a ways...and flying is something I try to stay away from as much as I can if unnecessary. Best wishes! Arjen

      Hi Arjen, thanks for the comment (I'm not sure why, but it was held for review). Yes, I was born in Voorburg, and emigrated here when I was a young boy. I considered a quest, but decided against it because I got the impression the rolled/tipped over pretty easily. Those are some big long rides you mention. A 200km ride here would be near my limit of what I can cover in a day, unless all I do is bike. In the Netherlands are you required to wear a helmet? I think I would love riding a velomobile through the Nethelands; my wife and I rode a bicycle through various towns near zoetermeer on a holiday once, it is so easy for biking there. Thanks heaps for leaving the comment. Happy riding,
      Marnix

    Nice video again. I have my green QuattroVelo (TheGreenThing) for three years now. And someone asked me for a video of it.
    So just maybe I will make an video on my channel about my velomobile. Or even make a new velomobile channel.
    But I'm normally speaking Dutch. And I'm not good in editing videos. So I think it will be first phone recorded English videos.
    Ik vind je video's leuk om naar te kijken. Ga zo door en fiets veilig.

      Hi Kit Wolf, thanks for leaving the comment. I guess it's how I interpret it, If I get a couple of short beeps, then I think it's friendly, but if a get a long beep, I thing it's not friendly. Also often beeps accompanied with a wave or "chur bro!" Yelled out the window (or words to that effect). Let me know it was intended to be friendly. Thanks again for your comments.

    I am going to get velomobile alpha 7. I am considering electric asistant too for that. Can you tell how much the electric asistant weights? I mean battery plus other systems which includes that. How many uphills you can use it before the battery is empty?

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mmm? Tricky question to answer. The motor is about 5kg, and each battery I use weighs about 3kg I think. The little display and cables don't weigh much.
      I personally use two batteries. They have gotten me distances of 200km whilst trying to conserve power. I often ride about 100km using the 2nd highest level of assist (and at times max assist when I want to show off).
      There are many variables like riad condition, gear ratio, weather, personal leg strength and many more.
      The alpha 7 is a bit lighter than my df, so should be more efficient. Thanks for the question, I hope I have answered it. Let me know if I can help further.

      @@jlkartvideos9887 in some countries 250w is the maximum allowed. In New Zealand I can have 300w. 250 is fine as long as you use low gears.

      @@kiwi_velonaut ok, so torque 50-90 Nm would be fine too? We don't have big hills in South Finland but I have tested Waw and I noticed that I had to work very hard in uphills without any e-asist.

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes going uphill in velomobile without assist is very slow. With the assist I am faster then competitive cyclists in my area. I'm not sure about how much torque you would want.

    You don't have regren right?

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct, for regen you normally use a hub motor. To use a hub motor on a single side mounted rear wheel is not adviseable due to the stress it would place on the mount. However a silver lining is that I tend to hill hop on quiet hilly roads.

    • @rockrl98

      @@kiwi_velonaut does the single side mount produce any vibrations at high speeds or rough terrain?

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rockrl98 I haven't felt any vibrations at high speed (60-90kph). I don't really take it on rough terrain, because it isn't designed for that. I have taken it on grass fields and metal/gravel roads, on those surfaces the velo is quite slow, but on grass field it is still fast and has no vibration.

    • @rockrl98
      @rockrl98 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiwi_velonaut what do you reckon is the reason it's slow on gravel, rolling resistance, suspension? I'm dreaming of building a large wheel hybrid velo, with some off-road capability, and a very illegal electrical system, as I'd want it to go 25 kmh over the worst of hills(70% is hilly/mountainous here) I'd be counting on it being at least as efficient as a normal MTB on flat terrain,

    • @kiwi_velonaut
      @kiwi_velonaut  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience on gravel/metal road the main reason for being slow is lack of traction. If you had a velo with front and rear drive, the traction would increase. Another reason I went slow over that terrain was because of all the stones hitting the bottom of the shell making a lot of noise. But yeah, if you could overcome traction, and you had a powerful electric motor in there, the velo could be fast on gravel road, and it could easily go faster than 25kph (due to the motor).
      Trisled, a company in Australia, puts out youtube videos about offroad recumbents that they built; might be worth a look. Good luck with uour dream velo.
