The electoral college system may have been fit for purpose all those years ago when it was introduced, but times have changed and now it stinks. The result should depend on how many voters nationally vote for each candidate, which often gives the opposite result from the EC system. The whole idea of democracy is that everyone's vote carries equal weight regardless of who they are or where they live, but as it is if you live in some states your vote will have more effect on the overall result than if you live in other states. But hey, with people like Trump around it's becoming ridiculous to even use the words America and democracy in the same sentence anyway.

Yeah, heard the same things from more neutral channels. Statistics can be easily manipulated, if the poll was primarily held in blue stats, then it will be biased to begin with, same if it is held in red states.
This surge in popularity is only in the first week, when Kamala has only just barely begun her campaign. She still hasn't put up any TV ads, for example. In recent decades I have often seen that the outcome of the election was completely different than predicted, which each time led to weeks or months and, in the case of Brexit, years of explanations as to why the outcome deviated from the predicted forecast. The electoral college system may have been fit for purpose all those years ago when it was introduced, but times have changed and now it stinks. The result should depend on how many voters nationally vote for each candidate, which often gives the opposite result from the EC system. The whole idea of democracy is that everyone's vote carries equal weight regardless of who they are or where they live, but as it is if you live in some states your vote will have more effect on the overall result than if you live in other states. But hey, with people like Trump around it's becoming ridiculous to even use the words America and democracy in the same sentence anyway.

I think it makes sense the polling would go like this to me, as a democrat voter. Out of all the people in the world, Harris isn't who we'd pick. Out of all the people realistically in the running for US president, Harris is overwhelmingly who we'd pick.

Constantly lying to the public for the last few months about bidens medical issues. The fact she is extremely radical, by some reports the most liberal senator. Her poor track record as a prosecutor and attorney general, the list goes on
I am a bit older and I had to take statistics for three courses at university and for a technical course. Anyway, I don't have much faith in polls, but I do believe that polls influence the election outcome.
In recent decades I have often seen that the outcome of the election was completely different than predicted, which each time led to weeks or months and, in the case of Brexit, years of explanations as to why the outcome deviated from the predicted forecast. We see this with Trump who still does not acknowledge his defeat. Don't know. I'm not American. I cannot influence the elections (I forwarded a misdirected support blue to my little-known second cousin in the US). So I wait.
I wouldn't say it's misguided to support blue in the US. The Republicans have picked an awful, awful candidate this year that poses a threat to our democracy.

He has also repeatedly said he will abuse his power to take revenge on his enemies and stack all government agencies with loyalists. How is he not a threat to democracy?

Now a good strategy for Harris in my opinion will be to pick Kelly as VP, it will give her better chances of swinging Arizona and a better image at the more moderate and Conservative voters.

Given the polls are so tight, and in the 2022 midterms the Democrats overperformed much worse polls on the backs on high turnout and abortion, something Harris is very effective on, and they have reasoks for hope from recent elections in Nevada, Pensylvannia, Michigan and Georgia, this looks actually posible (at least I hope and pray)
Trump historically polled worse than he actually performed. They expected a Biden to wipe out Trump, but Trump did fairly well.
@prometheus7387 that was true in 2016 and 2020, but in 2022 it actually looked like Trump was hurting the Republicans compared to what the polls said, many Trump supporters lost races to Democrats seen as vulnerable in the house, and prominent individuals in high profile races like Mehmet Oz in Pensylvannia and Kari Lake in Arizona who supported Trump and election denialism also lost
@@prometheus7387 what do you mean? Biden was projected to win by 3-10 points, and he won by 5. Sounds right to me. And Biden flipped Georgia and Arizona, and won a bunch of other swing states, the electoral map wasn’t even close for Trump.

If you want to actually know how a candidate is doing, check the bookies odds markets.
The bookies actually lose money if they are wrong and thus are by far the most reliable "poll" out there
@theqaz1828 both have their uses, there's no magic crystal ball and I don't think we should put too much faith in any one thing but they can be useful tools
Also, polls really work wonders in predicting what you want when you make the results up
You should have acknowledged that we are in a honeymoon period and Harris's approval rating will likely change a lot from the current polling as voters get to know her as more than just a generic democrat. The first debate will likely be how most voters form an opinion on her.

@@evd82_usn_vet52 That's how private political parties work in the US. She has to be nominated by her party then elected by voter just like how Trump gets nominated by his party then elected by voters. Same process for each. Neither is nominated by voters to run as the party candidate.

Because, as a VP, her job is a supporting role. To do things quietly in the background and not.upstage the president. Ergo, no one knew who she was and just tied her to the Biden administration. Now she is centre stage and people are getting to know her and she comes as a breath of fresh air in comparison to the cantankerous old men.
