I was at this show right up front. My wife and I attended this epic aligning of the planets on May 11, 2017 at Red Rocks Amphitheater. The idea we were there at the same time as Devin Townsend Project, Gojira, and - of course - the mighty Opeth, makes my gratitude hit the ceiling. It was a cold evening by the time Opeth started their headlining set. I gave my wife my Gojira hoodie because she was cold. I told her that even though I was cold in a t-shirt without my hoodie, I refuse to leave until Opeth plays my favorite Opeth song, "Deliverance." As fate had it that night, Opeth played "Deliverance" last; thus, ensuring I saw the entire miraculous performance by ALL bands on that legendary evening at Red Rocks - May 11, 2017. Life is good. With that being said, it is only natural that I recommend you react to "Deliverance" - hopefully the Lamentations live performance with their original drummer, Martin Lopez. Much respect, Polo! 🤘
I got to see them perform on the same tour with DTP and Gojira as well. Unfortunately not at Red Rocks, but it was still an amazing show. Best I've ever been to.
yes! my favorite genre is opeth. but seriously, opeth has ruined a lot of other music for me. if i go on an opeth bender, i have to switch to country or rap for a few weeks before i can listen to another rock/metal band.
For me Ghost of Perdition is one of the greatest metal songs ever made. The more you listen to it the better it becomes. And this goes for plenty of Opeth's albums and songs.
The thing with Akerfeldt is, beyond the simple vocal amplitude, he keeps his gutural voice in the perfect frontier between brutal and comprehensible, and when proper singing is absolutely beautiful.
So glad you're finally getting into Opeth. I'm sure you'll get to Porcupine Tree soon enough. This performance is legendary but what often goes overlooked is the absolute freightrain of a drum performance from Axe. And as always, Mikael's voice can lull you into the ether then shred the flesh from your bones. Finally, dont let this be the only impression of Opeth. Their more recent material is reminiscent of 70's Italian suspense movies mixed with classic prog and more. I'm excited for this new phase of Polo Reacts!
Opeth are truly a unique prog metal band. Elements of so many genres. But they’re not just thrown in to the song or melody for the hell of it, everything has a meaning. Every note, every instrument, every drum fill, every stressed vocal on certain words, etc… are all there to get the entire point of the song across. It’s a full experience vocally and musically. You said it perfect in the simplest way when you said the song sounded like chapters in a book. Every song has a deeper existential meaning behind them. Glad you listened! You really should check out that full performance plus many other songs from the 99-09’ time.
Being from the fifties I have listened to my fair share of music from the 70's and 80's. These guys share the same passion for building up their songs and are as complex. I love this♥️♥️♥️♥️
HEY YOU LISTENED TO OPETH!!! Seen them live 6 times, they RULE. Oh man there are so many great tracks for you to hear... PS: Check out the song "Deliverance" it has one of the most bad-ass final segments of any song ever.
They really are amazing live! Saw them twice last year, once at Graspop Festival and once at Apollo London, both shows they gave their all! Opeth celebrated their 30th anniversary last year, btw... Nice reaction video, I enjoyed your enthousiasm! Suggestion for another Opeth video is Harlequin Forest. After Ghost of Perdition, you'll like this one too! 😎🤘🏻
Opeth=automatic subscribe. Yes, please do more reactions on Opeth! Here's a few suggestions: The Moor, Baying of the Hounds, Deliverance. Mikåel Åkerfeldt is the vocalist for the clean and growl vocals. He's also the lyricist, the composer, and shares lead guitar with Fredrik Akesson, and he does the acoustic guitar as well.
I'm so glad you got to Opeth - welcome to their amazing world. I've been listening to them since 2005 and I'm still finding new material amongst their discography. Makes me happy that you enjoyed it so much. This is one of my favourites of theirs.
I'm so lucky for being able to listen to them in just 4 days!! So glad for the tour here in south america. Im gonna scream like a fucking pig when this song comes out
Opeth are easily the kings of progressive metal. Their songs have a familiar sound but they lead you down many paths of chaos that blend into beautiful melodic groves. Everything from bone shaking growls to beautiful groovy harmonies. When you realize English isn't their first language... Mind blowing. Super nice guys. I got most of their autographs after the show 15 years ago or so.
Been watching this channel for a while now, and finding this video on my notification was such a delight. Definitely my favorite band by far, and yeah, "beautifully complicated" is very appropriated indeed!
Opeth is like the Pink Floyd of metal. They just take you on a journey. Especially their older stuff (pre keyboards). The albums Still Life, my arms your hearse and blackwater park are all masterpieces. Check out the song Demon of the Fall.
Great reaction. I am sure you will like Opeth - Harlequin Forest. It also has a very nice mix of growls and clean vocals with a very interesting ending ;)
Opeth is amazing. I was lucky enough to see them live in Orlando, FL. They sound just as good live as they do in the studio. Amazingly talented musicians.
I've seen Opeth at least 15 times and their live sound has always been the best quality of any bands I've seen. Their live sound engineer is bloody amazing!
This show was amazing. I was actually one of the photographers there. It was a blast! And the venue is one of the best in the country. Also, the band that played before them on this show was Gojira. I’m sure you’ve gotten requests for them. Time to go down that rabbit hole. You certainly won’t be disappointed.
Swedish Metal! Welcome to the amazing world of Opeth and therethrough progressive Metals finest. From Stockholm in Sweden. Muuuuuch more to enjoy. They bern around since the early 90’s. Stay Metal! 🤘😎🤘.
Great choice, one of my favorite bands, they're up there with Tool for creativity, uniqueness and musical talent. Recommend doing studio version for first listens. Opeth is great live, they hit every note of their complex songs perfectly (saw them last year with Mastodon, another great progressive metal band you need to hear) and they have some good quality live videos out there. But the work and quality they put into those studio albums is just another level, especially 2000 and later when Steven Wilson was working with them. The detail and the atmosphere you get with good headphones listening to this album is incredible. This song, for instance, I prefer the album to this particular live recording. Same with Harlequin Forest- the live video on youtube is nice, the studio recording is magic.
I don't agree this time. Opeth are definitely better live. If you are not a metalhead, the growl voice may annoy you, but in front of live performances, every music lover can do nothing but bow down.
I’ve seen Opeth 7 times live, including at Red Rocks. They never disappoint. They have plenty of songs with some jazzy undertones you may like, especially the newer stuff. The Apostle in Triumph, harlequin forest and black rose immortal are excellent songs. However their entire album Still Life is possibly one of the greatest things ever recorded. Start to finish concept album detailing the events of a tragic love affair. The ups and downs the band is capable of emotionally, musically and lyrically really come through on Still Life.
Absolutely. Still Life and My Arms Your Herse are my favourites due to the concepts relating the songs to each other. Moonlapse Vertigo and When are the highlights for me!
SL is automatically in my top 3 albums in their discography. Which says a lot, but sometimes I feel like other albums get more exposure. This is definitely the case with MAYH, which is often over looked.
Dude! I was there! Cold AF but an epic show! Devon Townsend opening followed by Gojira. Then Opeth as the wind picked up and the temperature dropped. Best show of my life!
What some people do not realize about Metal genres, is just how deep it cuts into music history. You can hear the tendrils of so many genres and moments from history. There is often classical music influence, jazz influence, electronic nerd inventions influence(synths and analog gear), blues, psychedelic rock. From hendrix and django reinhardt to the 1980's and 1580's. Folk music and walls of pleasant noise. Growls and opera. And the drums are sometimes one of the most difficult styles in the world, in terms of drumming skills. Metal often incorporates phrygian mode and microtonal sound(via the vocals, guitar note bends and pinch harmonics) as well. And that sounds like ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia or India or somewhere like that.
I've heard them in september last year and oh my god, they sounded so crazy live, I was blown away. After being a fan for many years, finally seeing them live was a miracle
I had the honor of seeing them live quite recently, they didn't play this song sadly but they did play some others if my favorites. They are masterful live and I definitely recommend checking more of their stuff out. Every song is a musical journey
Opeth is so good. every member is a master. Mikael Akerfeldt is an incredible songwriter AND singer AND guitarist. Martin Mendez on bass gives them this loose jazzy rhythmic flow that feels so good with the super dramatic prog metal. they along with Meshuggah basically made Sweden the Capital of Metal since the 90s. Deliverance is a classic Opeth banger you should definitely check out.
I've loved Opeth since being 16. I'm 23 now and saw them FINALLY live last year with my bf. One of the best experiences of my life, and they even sounded better live in my town than any other video of live I've ever seen
So glad I caught this reaction. For years I never gave Opeth a second listen, because of the growling .These guys are HELLA talented and now I go back and start at square 1."Kingdom" by the Devin Townsend Project and "Awakening" by Unleash the Archers are two that should put a smile on your face.Rock on.
Was mostly here for Tool content but I adore Opeth and I'd love to see you react to more!! A few other great tracks to check out would be The Grand Conjuration, Harlequin Forest, and The Leper Affinity.
YES!!!! So excited to see you listening to Opeth. Would love to see you react to Harlequin Forest or Baying of the Hounds from the same album as this track. It’s an amazing concept album and worth doing a deep dive on (or at least reading the backstory. It paints an epic picture to think of when you listen). Also highly recommend re-listening to the studio version of this in your car so you can really feel the drums 🥁 SPEAKING OF DRUMS- If you enjoy Opeth, PLEASE check out Ghost of Karelia by Mastodon. It has some of my favorite drum fills in a song ever!
Mikael has to be my fav guitarist. He's not very technical but his ability to come up with unique riffs and melodies sets him apart from the rest. The amount of riffs in Black Rose Immortal is amazing, and that just 1 song.
He’s a great “feel” player, and those to me at least are always the best players. Virtuosity is great an all but if it becomes a math equation. Feel players you get a chance to peer into their souls.
Love Your reaction -Opeth is one of my favorites, and I was fortunate to see them in the late 90s. If you're looking for a great live performance, I highly recommend The Roundhouse Tapes. "Bleak", "Face of Melinda" are both usually overlooked, but amazing.
Yesssss! I love Opeth and had nearly forgotten about them for a while. It’s all coming full circle now that this guy is reintroducing me to music I love haha
Awesome. Finally got to Opeth. Top 3 Opeth albums 1. Blackwater Park (IMO one of the greatest metal albums of the past 25 years) 2. Still Life 3. Watershed Honestly can't go wrong with any of them but a suggestion. Start with The Leper Affinity or The Drapery Falls. Perfectly incapsulates everything that is Opeth.
I'd replace Watershed with Ghost Reveries in the top 3, but we're nitpicking :). Everything from '99-'10, Still Life through Watershed is incredible and iconic.
The bass player is amazing, and when members fell out, the main guy would shoot ideas back n forth for new albums. I would say both are the sound for the band. Love this band, thanks for checking this one out, sometimes it throws ppl off, but they are talented and man so many good hooks.
My first rock show was Opeth, i was 15. I knew i wanted to learn everything about music from that day on. Killer creativity and so darn tight preformance and production. Try Harlequin Forest or The Grand Comjuration? Nice to see them blow new listeners minds! Epic reaction 💯
So glad that you finally got to Opeth! As you can imagine they have a huge wealth of different material. Their sound has constantly evolved over the years and they love to explore different influences. Truly one of a kind, just like Tool!
Opeth truly stand alone in terms of musical integrity, creativity, versatility, and inspiration. Easily my most listened to band for over 3 decades. If you really want to get into them, i humbly suggest Watershed as the starting point, for that album really manages to capture everything that Opeth is, coalesced into one beautifully haunting accomplishment of virtuosity. Hell, it's worth the price of admission for Burden alone, to say nothing of every other track on it which are all masterpieces in their own right.
All you said about this band is spot on. I really think it's time to check out Ne Obliviscaris And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope, love in Denver Colorado. They are a 6 piece Australian progressive melodic death metal outfit. Two singers and a violin, if you like David's growls then you'll love Zen🤘
Congrats on discovering this band. They're one of the groups that has such a distinctive style and approach that they are instantly recognizable from their songwriting, riffs, vocals, etc. You're in for a treat looking into their discography. Also, I totally agree that their bass player is criminally under recognized due to how talented the rest of the band is.
I think of these unbelievably versatile and talented bands are the result of the question "what would the nerds from school forming a band look like". These compositions are genius.
It's badass and what's next, I'm from mexico but I got to see them in the Rialto Theater (R.I.P) and oof man I get goosebumps whenever I hear them. They oppened with Ghost of perdition and omg. I'd give anything to re-live that experience haha
What a journey you've been on Polo.. from hip hop and R+B to being part of the Tool army, and now onto Opeth. Massive props for just accepting Mikaels growl right off the bat too. I've been into metal and heavy stuff from being a kid but his growls still took me a bit of time to get used to when I first heard them (and now they are just another story telling device to me).. This track, and in fact the whole album, is a genuine prog masterpiece. Worth listening to start to finish as there are no bad tracks. I'd even go as far to say that they dont really have a bad album.. their early stuff is death/black metal, then they did some proggy stuff like this, and now they are full prog.. but theyve kinda managed to seamlessly pull it off lol. Amazing live too as you can see (see them a few times and they always smash it out of the park). My recommend for next Opeth would 100% be Deliverance. That track is one of the greatest pieces of prog metal ever written. Its got everything, including possibly the greatest outro to a track ever. Epic.
Same for me with growls. It took awhile for it to click with me. Look at it like a dialect. Eventually you learn how to hear the words with enough listens to a vocalist.
It amazes me to think that I was listening to van h. And I thought that was it...I wonder where I would be musically if I had just been shown this mind blowing group before now
YESSSSSSS!!! Opeth is good sh*t, bring us some more! Would highly recomend Harlequim Forest (my favorite) or Burden (a softer one) Keep up the good work, cheers from Brazil
You are the only one who noticed almost every detail on the first listen. Well done. Why is there no other Opeth reaction video? Continue with Harlequin Forest man!
The drummer that played this track on the record is one of my fav's of all time, Martin Lopez. He left the band in 2006. The drummer they have now is amazing in his own right, but he can't really replicate the jazzy swing Lopez plays with on the record. Check out the album version of The Grand Conjuration or Reverie / Harlequin Forest. Both bangers. And Blackwater Park is a must listen
One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. Their lyrics are cryptic and often have a horror theme. I believe this one is about an old lady who is possessed by a demon, and her son kills her (could be wrong though). Btw, Opeth is one of Jinjer's favorite bands.
I was almost gonna suggest early melodic black metal Opeth on your Darkthrone vid and this pops up right after I finished watching. 🤣Give the track "The Night and the Silent Water" or "Black Rose Immortal" a spin.

You gotta make more Opeth reaction Polo!
If you played a lot of Tony Hawk, I recommend your next System of a Down reaction to be - Shimmy 👌😎 you'll know it.
I was at this show right up front. My wife and I attended this epic aligning of the planets on May 11, 2017 at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Opeth is one of the best most unique most talented and especially underrated bands ever.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone listen to Opeth and just say they were ok. Not widely known but absolutely not underrated.
underrated?
@@dann3r55 yeah.... Underrated. They should be bigger than they are
They are not underrated, just not mainstream. Everyone in the metal community regards them highly. Great band nonetheless.
It honestly took me so many tries to get into this band. I don't know why But I love them now.
I saw these guys live in a small club with less than a thousand people about ten years ago. One of the best shows I've ever seen in my life.
I’m telling you bro. This genre of music can’t be beat.

Opeth is such an amazing rabbit hole to dive into! Welcome!
Love Opeth!! I've seen them 3 times, they're perfect!
To my ears its one of the (of The) best Opeth tracks. These guys are musician`s musicians.
Martin Mendez on bass 🇺🇾. I'm lucky enough to have been in their only concert in Montevideo, Mendez ' hometown, in 2012 . Good memory.

This song is meant for Lopez drumming tho. Hate to disagree with another Opeth fan, but Axe was never able to replicate what Lopez did imo
@@wesleyb1458 true. Lopez was the OG. But i think axe tried his best and brought his own sauce somewhat too!❤️

A few other great tracks to check out would be The Grand Conjuration, Harlequin Forest, and The Leper Affinity.
the grand conjuration is my favorite opeth song!
YES!!!! So excited to see you listening to Opeth. Would love to see you react to Harlequin Forest or Baying of the Hounds from the same album as this track. It’s an amazing concept album and worth doing a deep dive on (or at least reading the backstory. It paints an epic picture to think of when you listen).
Also highly recommend re-listening to the studio version of this in your car so you can really feel the drums 🥁
SPEAKING OF DRUMS- If you enjoy Opeth, PLEASE check out Ghost of Karelia by Mastodon. It has some of my favorite drum fills in a song ever!
Baying of the Hounds is amazing!
Opeth has some of the best muscians ever!!! Absolutely stunning band! i hope you do more!
”Serenity painted death”, ”Dirge of November” and ”Deliverance” are three favourites. But also ”Hjärtat vet vad handen gör”.
A masterpiece. Amanroth on drums, epic!
A powerful band. They don’t make a bad album. The best “black metal” band ever IMO
Top 3 Opeth albums
1. Blackwater Park (IMO one of the greatest metal albums of the past 25 years)
2. Still Life
3. Watershed
Honestly can't go wrong with any of them but a suggestion.
1. still life, 2. watershed, 3. ghost reveries, but i agree that it's nitpicking.
Check out everything, they have several albums of beautiful music! Hands down my favorite band ever.
I saw Opeth last year in LA. What an amazing band!
Excellent band, nobody really does quite what they do
All you said about this band is spot on. I really think it's time to check out Ne Obliviscaris And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope, love in Denver Colorado. They are a 6 piece Australian progressive melodic death metal outfit. Two singers and a violin, if you like David's growls then you'll love Zen🤘
These switch ups are 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️
it's a very well crafted song. It's one of my fav opeth songs for sure! glad you liked it!
Obviously an amazing band.
Yes ! “That part could have been a whole song” is sooo true. I think that a when I listen to Between The Buried And Me as well.
I love these guys and have for over fifteen years now! The group is absolutely fantastic.
Awesome. I love Opeth. I've seen them live a few times and they never disappoint.
Might be my favorite band of all time
Congrats on discovering this band. They're one of the groups that has such a distinctive style and approach that they are instantly recognizable from their songwriting, riffs, vocals, etc. You're in for a treat looking into their discography. Also, I totally agree that their bass player is criminally under recognized due to how talented the rest of the band is.
If you like this then check out their song The Grand Conjuration or Sorceress live at the Red Rocks Amphitheater
Yes Sorceress live at Red Rocks. It's something else!😉😁
You making a reaction video to this song/Opeth made my day!
Beautifully complicated. Very Well said! Welcome to atmosphere that is Opeth!
This was the right song to react to first. Shoutout To Mark
Would highly recomend Harlequim Forest (my favorite) or Burden (a softer one)
Keep up the good work, cheers from Brazil
Each song flows together in the albums, that's why this song starts out that way, playing off the previous.
Isn't this the first track on the album?
@@joshuajackson4268 you're absolutely correct. Belay my last.
Opeth now? Progressive Black Metal!
Their 20+ album catalogue is worth checking out btw.
Black Metal? LMAO
You are the only one who noticed almost every detail on the first listen. Well done. Why is there no other Opeth reaction video? Continue with Harlequin Forest man!
I was there. It was an incredible show!
Yeaaahhh some love for the back crew, that's what I like to see
Opeth is the best band ever.
Love your reactions man. I'm a fan!
You got it right, Martin is a bad ass bass player!
He sings both the parts of the beauty and the beast. One man spectacle 😂
