Arab Man Reacts to OPETH - Ghost of Perdition [LIVE at Red Rocks Amphitheatre]

  • Habibati! It's a spooky one today! I finally got the chance to actually sit down and properly listen to Opeth, and I was NOT disappointed! 'Ghost of Perdition' was like a horror movie in song form, building suspense and taking you on a journey only to shock you time and time again! Man, how does he do the things that he does, simply incredible.
From what Joey tells me, this is what defines the sound of Opeth and they get much more extreme on both ends of the spectrum so I'm looking forward to checking out more of it!
If you want to check out my 3 favorite things about this performance, the link is right here.

I learned to appreciate growls listening to Opeth... because they are such outstanding musicians.
With Opeth , think of the vocals like parts in a gothic opera ,each character represented in its own styling.

Yeah, same with me. It lasted for nearly a year. I had trouble listening to "simple" music once I was so deep into Opeth. You know what "saved" me? The White Stripes. Because they're the other end of the spectrum. Totally minimalistic. After that year, first delving into Opeth and then into The White Stripes, my perception and reception of music had changed profoundly. I could now enjoy simple verse-chorus-verse structures as well as full-blown progressive epics. Just be in the moment with the music, enjoy every part for what it is, don't just wait for the chorus. If a part get's repeated, that's fine. If not, that's also fine. Just enjoy the ride :)

@@bernhardkrickl3567 As if you took my words from my mouth! That same thing happened to me, but the band that "saved" me was Halestorm - I love them both, although they are "the north and the south pole"! I think I learned myself how to switch smoothly between the music I listen to and I'm really proud of it, because it's not that easy to listen to Django Reinhardt right after Cannibal Corpse, lol.

@@user-wt2kq4sc6t I love these contrasts :) Especially when I buy music from wildly different artists at the same time I get a strange kind of joy out of that :) I totally get what you're saying. From my experience, there is only a couple of times in life that you hear a band that changes everything in your "music" world. Opeth is one of those bands. I first heard this song two years ago while listening to Slayer radio on Pandora when I was out running. I literally stopped to look at my phone to see what band and song was playing.....I went down the Opeth rabbit hole for 9 months. Get ready for an increadible journey.

  • @alienlifeform7490
    @alienlifeform7490 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Perhaps the anger comes from, not only hearing something like this for the first time (mind blown) and then the realization that only a very small percentage of metal bands, are at this level. The awareness that you, or I, could never reach that level of musicianship. It's truly a spiritual experience. To be open to it, is to be liberated, in countless ways, because what you experience affects every aspect of your life, from that point on. Let that anger go. Rise from the ashes to a new awareness. On and on it goes. Amen

Opeth is basically a genre unto themselves. The were never the heaviest death metal band. Mikael's clean vocals, while beautiful aren't technically perfect. His gutteral vocals don't pack the brutal lows of Corpsegrinder's. Yet somehow they manage to be one of, if not the best progressive metal band of all time. I myself could never get into growled vocals until I gave Opeth a real chance to grow on me they opened the door to not only death metal, but progressive, folk and jazz fusion band's like Weather Report. It is my belief that someone who can't find something in their music to appreciate is not a well rounded music fan.

Wellcome to my very own Rabbithole, where I get mad at myself every now and then for all the missed chances to see Opeth live 😖 I only got o see them 11 times in 20 years... not enough!
Maybe you're angry because Joey did show opeth to you so late in your young life? Keep on listening! They are so versatile and changed their style drasticly over the years... ghost of perdition is one of the 'older' ones... and it is fairly simple in regards of writing and composing... it is a masterpiece, but there are even more complex Opeth Songs out there...just saying 🤣😇🥰

One of the most beautiful concert venues in the US....open air amphitheater in the Red Rocks just west of Denver....up in the foothills of the Rocky Mountians.....looking east. So when you are sitting there, your view goes to the stage and then past that out to the plains..the lights of the city in the distance and the night sky. I went to a couple of concerts there when in college back in 1969/70......great place.

As I'm sure others will mention, Opeth no longer record tunes with harsh vocals. All albums after "Heritage" (2011) are cleanly sung. However, they do still perform the old tunes live, as this performance comes from the current prog metal era. I discovered Opeth during this time the prog era, and like you, did not enjoy growls, and purposely avoided them. I hear the tune "Will O the Wisp" and was intrigued, as it's hauntingly beautiful. That led me to explore the back catalog, and while I still prefer clean vocals, Mikael Åkerfeldt's ability to go from the demonically brutal to heartachingly beautiful is stunning. I saw my first live Opeth show last year, and I've never seen such a masterful display of musicianship live. There isn't any running around on stage, just incredible badassery, with Mikael throwing in some very dry wit between tunes. For the most part, Mikael is Opeth, doing the bulk of the writing. It's complex musically, thematically, and spiritually. If you enjoy his clean singing, the last 3 albums are some of my personal favorites, but they all are worth your time.

His moving back and forth in vocal style reminds a bit of Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, who can sing softly and then go into screams.....Ditto Robert Plant...
It’s great for a band to have such a vocalist because it adds so much texture. This is first time I’ve heard Opeth....I’m not into growls, but damn, they’re fantastic musicians, and I love his “straight” voice......they change meter as much as Tool! Impressive. @@CPT_Nelson he uses them live mate but the power ain’t there anymore.. kinda happens with voices like Mikaels 30 years of screams and gutterals is gonna take its toll eventually! Still amazing though!

I noticed something in his posture when he's growling now. He has his head tilted downward, facing the mic, and if there's anything I've learned from vocal coaches reacting to metal in the last year or so it's that projecting downward with your voice is sub-optimal for breath control and projecting power. I don't know the technical details but if I recall correctly, their performance on the Lamentations recording, Mikael wasn't chin down at the mic; I specifically remember him having the mic pointing downward to him and he sang upwards to it.
Anyway, I'll go see Opeth live stil, but these live videos I have a heard time enjoying because the growls from Mikael sound off, like there's something missing, like he's running out of breath or something.
And maybe that's it, maybe it is a breath control thing, and perhaps since he's just not as interested in the growling vocal style anymore there isn't as much thought put into how the mic is placed during those sections and he's just not doing it the same way he used to when he did care.

@@thebluriam listening Bleak of the roundhouse tapes he’s brutal sounds the best I’ve ever seen him live.. he’s more modern stuff he just sounds like he’s making a growly noise! Maybe he just don’t like doing it anymore because it’s definitely in there somewhere!

@@reddevil1105 Wasn't the roundhouse tapes right before he said he's done doing growls on new recordings
I'm hoping this new era of growth of the appreciation of Metal from all these crazy reaction channels changes his mind about growling. I understand his boredom with it but I feel like he's throwing the baby out with the bath water in just ditching it entirely. I love and appreciate their new direction but it certainly has lost a certain range of emotional edge which was necessary to facilitate growling.

7:00 I looked up some definitions to best explain it and this bit was the simplest:
    "
Farther has one meaning, further has three.
Further/farther means more distant. [Both in space and time]
"It was a long way, farther than I expected."
Further (or furthermore) also means "additionally".
"Furthermore, I have a better idea."
Last, "further" also means to advance.
"I wish to further my career.""

The further/farther question becomes even more complicated when measuring time as a distance using light years.
