    I have a good number of blind shoots on my hybrid teas this year. I attribute that to not watering early enough in the season. So now I must cut further down the shoots.
    Lovely 'Lady of Shallot'!

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just spoke to the rosarian who grows roses for 45 years, and her thought on blind shoots is cold weather.

    • @Thunderbird68-i2f
      @Thunderbird68-i2f ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OlgaCarmody I've been growing them for 25 years. My opinion differs because I live in cold weather and usually don't have this problem. Hybrid teas really need to be fed and deeply watered as soon as they break dormancy otherwise; it results in a majority of blind shoots.

    • @Thunderbird68-i2f
      @Thunderbird68-i2f ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OlgaCarmody Olga, there's a difference between cold weather and a hard frost. Nightime frosts will zap/damage new shoots for sure and it's possible (but not proven) that a hard frost will also result in blind shoots. It's one thing when a rose has a minority of blind shoots and yet another when the majority of them are without bud. Like you said...just cut the shoot to accelerate the process of it forming new ones. It will eventually form new ones on its own anyways if it's not cut.
      Feeding and deep watering once per week for the first 4 weeks after breaking dormancy will result in fewer blind shoots, in my experience. The exception being to avoid watering on a day or evening when there are nightime frost warnings in the forecast.

    Clematis are pretty hardy if that is the complaint. I'm in USDA zone 5b near Niagara Falls. I give them rose food in the spring. Group 1 early spring bloomers may be harder to grow in cooler climates. Group 2 Large Early Flowering seem to be fine here and repeat
    Bloom around August. Group 3 are the kind you cut (or they die) to the ground. Patience is needed as they grow back from the roots and can be slow to emerge. I do have Multi-blue which grows into my climbing rose. They seem to get along. They need more sun than you might think.

    Yes, I would love to see a weekly update on your roses and hydrangeas. Three of my David Austin roses died over the winter.they were five years old. I am so upset. They looked poorly last summer but still had some blooms. I’m not here in New England in the spring so I can’t prune them every year and keep them healthy. I also have three lady of shallot roses that grew way too tall last year because I couldn’t prune them in the spring. I cut them back half way last fall and they survived but but had some die back so I had to cut back some of the canes further in early May. Now they are starting to grow new shoots from the base of the roses but they are still very young and tender so I hope they can survive. Should I dig up the three dead roses? Is it true you cannot replant roses where previous roses have died? I have heard there is something called replant disease which can kill roses if you plant them in the same spot where other roses died but wasn’t sure if this was true.I don’t have all the space in my yard that you do and only have limited places to plant roses . I would appreciate any advice you have. Your roses are beautiful!

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Willow, we had such a hard summer here in Northern US, that many plants were going into winter already stressed. By now, if there is no life in your dead plants, I would take them out. And if you worry about replant disease, just take that soil with roots out and put it somewhere else in the garden, even better switch soils since your garden is small. And plant a new rose! Happy gardening!

    In re: clematis and roses -- Decades ago, I fenced in the side yard to the kids could run and play and my wife and I would not worry about anyone running into the street. Then she decided to decorate the fence with clematis. They did not thrive, so the next year I claimed a portion of the fence where they had failed. I planted some roses and they took off and prospered without much attention. This was a Zone 6 location; I have no idea whether the climate played a part or not. Since then, I have never planted another clematis.

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  ปีที่แล้ว
