Hi Olga thank you so much for this. I am new to David Austin roses and learning so much from your channel. A suggestion for future videos. It would be really helpful for me if you could insert pictures of the roses when you are speaking about them. I have been pausing the video and googling so as to visualise the roses as you mention them in the meantime 😂
Sorry, Kitty, you are so right. Very often I am frustrated with no visual references and here I am with my video…But I am glad you are enjoying my videos and they are helping you with gardening!
Wow! Nice video! I like how we gardeners make plans and change plans year after year. Sometimes stressful but overall exciting to do. I look forward to seeing your Eden and New Dawn grow. I bought Olivia Austin and Roald Dahl recently and I'm excited to grow and enjoy them. :)
My Olivia Austin and Roald Dahl are coming too this spring! Can't wait! I ordered 5 of Roald Dahl and am planning to plant them all close to each other and eventually make one big bush!
Wonderful video, Olga. Don't know much about roses (yet) but I like watching your videos because they are so pretty to watch, and you always say nice things. I appreciated the sun at beginning and the end of your video.
Rambling roses are so beautiful!! People forget there are so many flowers that only bloom once 🌸🌸 like peony’s !! Can’t wait to see your garden come spring!!
Hello again Olga. This morning I watched this video of yours and I noticed we have a few rose favorites in common! This is only my second spring of purchasing David Austin roses but I think I have enough now to practice some good rose skills. Some that we have in common, Olivia, Queen of Sweden, Vanessa Bell, A Shropshire Lad, and a Lady of Shalott…. that I am sad to say I do not think will make it 😢. I have let DA know and they agree except they have no more for this season. I will have to see what I can do about this. I do have other roses and will share with you as I continue to watch your videos 😊. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Arlene
Hi Arlene, we do have same collection of roses! It is hard to believe that DA ran out of Lady of Shalott! Meanwhile, today I received my last rose shipment from DA, and it is New Dawn, graft. I opened the package and the roots were dried! Gosh, you should have seen me how quickly I ran for the water bucket...
I have enjoyed watching each and every video of your lovely garden. You are so enthusiastic and a joy to learn about roses. I also want two new ramblers for my new structure. Please keep videos coming.
Good morning. I have been trying to decide which roses I plan on ordering. We had an ice storm a few days back. With the cold lingering it is nice to look through the David Austin catalog and dream of warmer days and beautiful blooms. Thank you for sharing your lovely ideas. God bless and keep you and yours throughout the year. Beth
You are so welcome, Helen! I look forward to all the beautiful blooms already! I know, I have to be patient though, but even a small display from all baby roses will be great! Happy gardening!
@@OlgaCarmody the new dawn you will be getting I’ll be surprised if a single rose won’t make it up your frame AND down the other side. A neighbour has it here in the uk and it’s grown huge for her.
I bought an eden rose last year to climb up my porch rail. I was excited to see you doing something similar. I got it as a bare root last spring, it even bloomed last summer. I’m very excited to see it again this year!!
I bought a bare root Olivia last year, it grew so much and bloomed a lot. They are absolutely beautiful and fragrant. They can grow very big, make sure to give it a lot of room. I didn't and I don't know what to do now... 😅
@@OlgaCarmody I may dig out some not so attractive plants to give it more room. Can't wait to see your growing! I ordered more Austin roses for spring too :)
@@OlgaCarmody In fact I placed two orders! Roald Dahl, Desdemona, Charles Dawwin, Queen of Sweden, Crown Princess Margareta, Eustacia Vye, Tess of d'Urbervilles, Bathsheba, The Ancient Mariner, Gabriel Oak, The Poet's Wife!!! OMG, I ordered a lot! I think that's it for some time. I won't order for quite a while. I may propagate the ones I like in the future.
@@indie8189 That is a good bunch of roses. Recently I was reading about one rosarian, who didn’t have a garden. When he finally got his land, he went ahead and bought every rose variety available from his vendor. Imagine that? 150 bare roots arriving at the same time?
I have the Eden in zone 7A. It never has a drop of blackspot or mildew. I had to move it though, because it wasn't getting enough sun so only flowered once for me. It is unbelievably beautiful though. My new roses for 2022 are Summer Romance, Earth Angel, and Olivia. I also have the problem of a light colored background but I think it'll be ok with a dark trellis.
@@OlgaCarmody Funny enough, I'm not into fragrance really at all. I have never been one of those people that stick my nose into the flowers. I just care about it's beauty and health. If it has enough of a fragrance that I would notice as I walk by, that's just a bonus. I just love Kordes roses, as they're generally very healthy.
I did the same thing with New Dawn right by my door it will go up and around my door to the other side. I looked at cable wire to attach up above the door and around to the other side so an arbor into my house.
I love hearing your gardening plans. It’s so interesting and gives me ideas for mine. What type of yew do you have in the front of your house? I really like how low and bushy it is.
Hello Olga and Happy New Year!! Love your videos, I just order "lady of shallot"and I'm planning to plant it in a large container, please can you tell me if you put gravel or rocks in the bottom of the container and what kind of soil you reccomend. Thank you🌸🌸
Happy New Year to you too! There is some research that gravel at the bottom actually creates waterlogged condition in the pot. Didn’t test that theory myself though. I would put good quality potting soil with aged manure into pot. I would make sure that pot is big enough to host Lady of Shalott. Good potting soil has some sort of water retentive component in it, don’t know where you live, but here in North America they offer peat moss, which holds water and nutrients well. And your rose will need that, since it will be growing in the pot. Happy gardening!
I mercilessly cut through and form a bigger hole, fill it with fresh soil and plant away. Please keep in mind that roses will not tolerate root competition and shade. They will not bloom well and will be prone to diseases.
Hm, I guess I am stuck on the idea of beautiful roses growing under the front window with traditional low box hedge…I will give those beauties one more year and see how they do. Thank you for your suggestion.
