  • Lady of Shalott rose is blooming for the second time in my Connecticut garden! It is not as big as it's first magnificent blooms. This rose can be trained as a climber or a shrub and now is the time to show you what I do with those confusing long shoots which this beauty produces.
    Also I share my tricks how to train young shoots and direct them where I want them to grow. Happy Gardening!

      Me, too! Thank you, Olga! Since you have two together and I will only have one along a walkway, how many feet from the walkway would be "safe" so guests to my yard don't brush up against it?

    Very helpful information and thank you ❤ To be honest, I do not like the growing habit of Lady of Shallot. It simply is not a shrub but a climber. Also it has the not flowering issue if not winterized well in southern states.

    Thank you for your videos on Lady of Shallot. My LOS is in her second year. I didn't know what to do with her when she got so big with lot of long shoots, so I cut them back. This video and your previous video explain this beautiful rose's habit very simply. Thank you. This year, LOS is off to a big start. I have attempted a homemade obelisk, but may dismantle that and just "let her go", now that I know her growing habit. This was most beneficial. Thank you again.

    Wow, the Lady of Shalott really wants to climb! So many shoots heading upward ... Maybe an obelisk trellis might be a way to allow more growth and more blooms in that location. The Generous Gardener is quite huge as well, with big thick canes! I wonder how old your roses are?

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, those roses are around 11 years old. Lady of Shalott is own root and GG is grafted. I never gave it a thought about letting Lady of Shalott to climb, but after your suggestion, it sounds like a possibility.

    So, if you buy Lady of Shalott as a shrub, will it still try to be a climber and grow those long shoots? Thanks for the video, Olga. Very interesting.

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lady of Shalott is one plant. When you buy it from the nursery as a climber, they will trim it that way and will ship it your way. If you buy it as a shrub, trimming will be different. You can reverse those installed habits by retraining your rose. How to do it? You keep long shoots if you want it to be a climber. In not, you trim those and keep your rose as a rounded shrub. Hope it helps! Happy gardening!

    I also notice you planted your climber next to an old tree stump. This past year I bought a property with overgrown beds and had to cut down many trees and shrubs next to the house. A gardener friend of mine suggest I just poke around and "find" pockets where there aren't roots so I can plant new flowers there. My question is, is that what you did?

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you are referring to a cut tree stump. It didn't grow there, we placed it there for kids to play. So, no root competition.

  • @davenadainton4209

    I have watched your video about 5 times olga haha. I love this rose but the size of her frightens me a little. I would really like a big rose but those tall shoots she throws out concern me incase I trim them wrong. (maybe I could set an obelisk in the center whilst she is still young to help with the tall shoots). Did you buy yours as a shrub? And mine would be in full sun in the UK for most of the day.. Im Wondering how it would affect the colour of the blooms in summer

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Lady of Shalott is an octopus rose and it would want to become a small climber after it's first flush of blooms. I bought it as own root shrub. It is a tall shrub, that space is good for her, but definitely not under 3 feet high. I see gardeners report blooms slightly different on her. Mine have a strong tendency to fade from clearly orange in to shades of pinks.

    • @davenadainton4209
      @davenadainton4209 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OlgaCarmody I love both shades. Pink and orange so I'll keep her in full sun 😁. I have now allocated her a space and have ordered this beautiful rose. The space allocated for her is a open space like yours so there's no way she could be a climber permanently unless I place some obelisks around her 🙄. Im hoping I will love this rose as much as you do. I hope your yew tree is doing a little bit better now too after finding all that plastic at the base xx

  • @manlly9664

    HI, I found that this rose can be either very orange or more pinky when search photos online even in your video. I want to get one, just confuse if I can have the colour of more pinky. Maybe the color of this rose changes in different stage?

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, same rose, but different color of flower depending on the season. It starts the season with strongly orange flowers and then slowly goes into deep pinks and finishes the season with light faded pink.

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t have the space to accommodate those long shoots. You are right, bending those wonderful shoots will create more blooms and bigger shrub. I have to cut those beauties out and keep my Lady of Shalott as a shrub, not short climber. Happy gardening!
