Have you tried Inktense watercolors? They're by Derwent and are permanent when dry. I'm wondering if the first layer was Inktense and additional layers were traditional watercolors, then perhaps when you reverse stencil you'd reveal the colored first layer. I'm definitely going to try that. 🙂
