Jung Ho-yeon, the girl from Squid Game, has become the biggest Korean actress on Instagram, gaining 15 million followers in one week 🤣 She’s also the new face of Louis Vuitton. Talk about killing it.

I always enjoy all of your podcasts with Ed, especially your guys’ movie reviews. I am a person who enjoys the breakdowns of films and how they impact an audience and as individuals, and what the film wants us to think about or what they want to speak about. I feel like I gain such new perspectives when I get to hear your discussions and when you tell your personal stories. You guys together never disappoint whether it’s an episode that’s more lighthearted or one that has more emotional content.

These podcasts help me out in work, I'd listen to music but it turns into replaying so many of the same songs. So listening to these podcasts help me power through work. Especially since they are an hour or longer so ill listen to 8-9 a day! Your jokes make me laugh and coworkers look at me so weird. 🤣🤣 Keep it up David!

There's a movie called Wind River starring Jeremy Renner and Elizibeth Olsen; it's not about Asian Americans it's about Native Americans. It does the same thing where the movie sheds light on this dark reality in the United States.

Just finished Blue Bayou. I honestly felt the movie was slow but I understood the story. Being a Hmong American in this country and knowing family who have been deported like this.. It hits different when you can relate too it. The ending got me tearing up bad.. lmao 10/10 movie for the story line!

I’m 3 episodes deep and i dont see myself rewatching this series. It’s compelling but it takes too much from other shows or movies to really get me hooked on the show. It’s compelling in terms of mystery but once you learn the rules of the world of squid game the show is pretty predictable. I’m happy that this movie takes from other notable stories like Battle Royale (the type of suspense and action and conflicts characters have as results of being in the world of the tournament), The Liar Game (the premises of games in which players compete with each other as get to see the reveal of the types of characters) and Alexander jodorowsky’s Holy Mountain (set designs and use of colors and metaphors)

Sorry that happened to your brother. I had a similar experience when I visited South Korea during Junior yr of College to visit my relatives. At the airport, a lady at the desk around my age was checking my passport and all of a sudden she started screaming at top of her lung that "YOU NEED TO JOIN KOREAN MILITARY". My document clearly mentioned that I'm a US citizen but she didn't give a shit and won't even listen to me. Eventually this older dude escorted us to their office and sorted out the situation by saying that there was a "misunderstanding" and I was free to go. Even to this day I still don't know how to process what happened and I don't get why they would bother to keep a unstable person to work at the airport.

  • @daheeroh

21:45 the reason why (I've heard this from other Korean friends and seen it myself) is because even though your friend was born in the States, his family probably forgot to cross out his name in the family lineage (you have to go to the Consulate or something to do that.) Regardless of citizenship, as long as you're still recorded on the family lineage, you need to do the two year mandatory service 😭😅

blue bayou talks about a problem that a lot people wouldnt believe is highly relative to asian americans in terms of being an adoptee or dealing with ICE so its a different story during this day and age and its relative only to those who can relate to the main characters problems

1:04:40 Yup. People started clapping at the airport when I we went to pick up my father in law. We were crying because he had my mother in laws ashes. During the pandemic, he was the only one who could go to be there for her, but she passed away and he brought her back. People were clapping because they couldn’t see the urn.

I’ve been in this country since I was 3 and I have yet to even get a green card and I came with a visa. Getting a green card/citizenship is not that easy. My brother in law’s brother became a citizen and petitioned for him when he was 14, he’s 45 and is still waiting to get any legal status.

I haven’t seen blue bayou yet but man, it sounds heavy. The story line does remind me of a documentary that I saw years ago about Shin Song Hyuk, who got his named to Adam, I think during the adoption process. I don’t think his was as intense as the story line but there was a lot of similarities.
There was another documentary about Korean adoptees that I’ve watched. I think the majority were female. But they talked about their struggle of not really fitting in anywhere. Some were single moms, some ended up adopting themselves and some went back to Korea to try to find themselves. It’s really interesting.
The common theme, was finding a place where they belong and as you stated about the film, dealing with trust and abandonment issues.
There are people who are adopted in their own countries that have this issue, but coming from one country to another and having to deal with extra trama is intense.
I think these types of stories are important and should be told. I’m glad Justin got to make it and share it. There are some movies that open up a whole new world that you would’ve never would have know about had someone not decided to write a movie. I look forward to checking it out.

    S. Korea pulls a lot of bullshit like they're talking about here. If you're a boy born to a Korean citizen parent (at the time of birth), Korea automatically claims citizenship on the child and can force them to serve in the military. You have to file to give up your Korean citizenship even if you have no idea that you had it in the first place. They also make it a huge pain in the neck to do it.
Theoretically, this would still apply even if you're like 3rd or 4th generation if none of the previous generation knew to file to give up their citizenship, though I'm not sure how the Korean government would know it...

Referring to the story of the surfer friend and David’s brother, I think Korea determines nationality (citizenship) more by bloodline/family line rather than the place someone is born. Someone born in the US to Korean-citizen parents during a certain time period are technically born with both citizenships. (They can give one up by choice or automatically later on.) Similarly, there are people born in Korea to non-Korean parents and they can only gain Korean citizenship through naturalization.
It’s definitely different from how the US determines nationality! I wonder if it has to do with Korea seeing the Korean people as one (to a degree)? Maybe one’s country is seen less as a physical place/home, and more as the people group you belong to? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Korean citizen parents must be very careful when registering their child born in the USA as they can inadvertently make their child a citizen of South Korea. It gets worse if they tell their parents in Korea who will register their child in Korea's records, making them absentee citizens by default. Japanese can renounce their citizenship at 21 if they want to be Americans but Koreans have to go through another process altogether. What Korean citizen parents must do is not inform anyone in Korea about the real name or birth date of their male children until they are confirmed to have renounced citizenship at 12-13 years old- Korea already puts male citizens in a register at that point and 'waits' for them to sign on before they are 18.
And no David, being born in the USA doesn't negate Korean citizenship either. Most countries do not practice juis solis any longer, European countries stopped in the 1980s, the UK and Australia nearly completely block citizenship for anyone born there without a citizen parent, even Ireland stopped in 2004. So some advice to Koreans on a green card thinking their boys will not be called up due to being born in the USA- don't be naive, renounce their citizenship as soon as possible if you want to stay in the USA, don't tell omma and oppa their real names or date of birth; so they are invisible in Korea and can't be called up for anything.

all of you don't know how to roast saying things like "oh David hasn't done enough film" or "he's so opinionated" he has literally said that he is hyper opinionated you want to roast here is an example: Shang chi - biggest representation for Asian Americans in Marvel, "Minari"- award winning film featuring sexy Korean male main character, blue bayou- no awards, not very relative and only known actor is Alicia from tomb raider and ex Machina , Gooc- this was a film, who allowed the title?, remembered by no one , way to controversial for Asian Americans considering what happened during the la riots
