Welcome to the 4fun live comedy show! Tonight, we have three comedians performing: Jonny, Dion, and our headliner, a person we’ve never met before, Mr. Jay Hewlett: A local comedian who was unfortunately the first person who responded to us about a comedy show on gigsalad, Jay is today’s subject.

I was one of the mimes (up front left), and it was *very* difficult to keep a straight face when Jay was up. Dude is really funny. I'm glad he came back out too! Class act dude!
Dude I felt so bad for Jay, He was fucking hilarious in my opinion... Honestly they dragged the prank on too long, it was painful.

He complimented the hat, he gave him advice thinking he was a first time comedian and pumped him up wishing him luck… this guy is so nice. Then he was so funny. I feel bad for him for having been given such a hard time. He is probably never going to agree to perform in this theatre ever again.
This is so true. He seems so sweet, i wanna cry. But with this hard situation he proved how amazing he is as a person and as a comedian. Seriously. What a man. He did so well.
This feels like those nightmares you have as a kid. It has the potential to be traumatizing.
Still, Jay managed to make me crack my ass off with the jokes.
He sounded cocky and full of himself to me. Dude barely has 500 followers on Instagram but acts like he's a star. I've heard funnier stuff from 5 year olds. His attitude when finding it was a prank just sealed my dislike for him.

These guys completely botched the prank. Mimes aren’t emotionless, they simply pantomime their emotions instead of verbalizing them. Having the mimes was funny; instructing them to remain stone-faced and silent was not.
he did amazing. i can imagine him feeling upset about it. but he was an amazing sport about it. i can say i thought his jokes were good and he even made a mime chuckle with one!!
14:55 'You taking food out of my mouth...' and essentially away from his family. The host responds mildly repugnant. But that's the point!!! Snide skits like this can destroy valid comics such as him.
This is a perfect example to show that professional comedians are not all goofy, charismatic, and easygoing. We may think that because he is a comedian he would laugh, have fun and go along with the prank, unfortunately he just got angry. Some comedians have a more serious personality and are still excellent professionals.
“Unfortunately”? What if you came home to someone pranking that your wife or girlfriend is getting smashed, and you “unfortunately” get upset?
What kind of response is that? He has the right to respond how ever he wants. He was professional about it, so kudos to him.

He knew right away that it was a gag, WHICH IS STILL A PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IN FRONT OF AN EVEN BIGGER AUDIENCE, and he absolutely refused to get into it. He didn't for one moment even try to play along; he was not joking when he said he had completed his contractual obligation.
He was right in every way to be upset. Then he realized after a few days that this actually helped his career. Any one with and understanding mind will see this. And great! On his part for recognizing that!
@wendufeng I only say unfortunately because having a laugh and going along with the prank is generally a better outcome than getting angry. Not saying he didn't have the right to get angry. Some people are inclined to get angry, others to have fun with it. Which goes along exactly to my point, not all comedians are goofy and would just have fun with it. It is a preconception people generally have. Once again, a great example of that.
Not many comedians could perform that well in that situation. Jay is impressive. Truly.

Those mimes were doing everything to not laugh, Jay is amazing and this is the first time I have ever seen his act.

Bro walked onto a stage in front of a bunch of pros who excel in being emotionless. They are told specifically not to laugh. This man still made some of them crack.

I think this would've been even funnier if it had been silent the whole time. Have the first two comics come back and be like, "this crowd is dead man, it's horrible". Build up the dread for Jay, "why is no one laughing?" and then he finally comes out and it's because they're fucking mimes.

This same prank was done in Hungary 20 years ago. No mimes, just completely silent treatment, of many stand-up guys (each) . The most skilled stopped the act, and literally tried to talk to the audience, what is wrong, how can he help, no charge, just out of empathy, and successfully talked 10 minutes before the reveal. He said that this was his most horrible time in life, and the entire audience was in tears.

Man I would hire Jay, he actually was really funny, he had good texts, good reactions and handled the situation like a man.

You can tell what kind of guy he is by his jokes, talking about being beaten by a belt as a kid and then acting all agro and staunch over a prank coz it hurt his ego. Fuck that guy.
Without laughter, the show felt quite melancholy. Being able to share such stories with each other and find humor in them is the real therapeutic strength of comedy.
Yeah, without the laughter it felt like listening to an older uncle or grandpa, or a a father in law, as he reminiscences on the past, and that was hilarious even without an audience laughing.

I want to see a whole show with Jay Hewlett as the judge called "Break the Mimes" where they get comedians to do this exact thing and score them based on how many mimes they can get to nod/crack/laugh. Awesome concept, great prank, but a brutal thing to do to an unsuspecting dude. Mad props to Jay for delivering a great set, under the worst situation possible. I am now a fan.

When he later talks about how he was afraid that this gig would ruin is career, if people thought he would realy bomb.
I get that, but like all things that we are passionate about, when it becomes our source of income, a lot of the original passion is lost. If he were a fresh comedian, and not so polished in his jokes, he might have been able to play off that audience by doing some mine sh** with them… cast a fake line and reel one up on stage, or something. He might not see it, but this prank was a gift in disguise. I hope that he does great in his craft after this.

Jay's a rock star. Don't forget, he just got done standing there for 10 minutes in front of a dead crowd with every worst case scenario going through his mind, it's going to take more than 10 minutes for his mind to snap back from that. That he did his full time in the middle of being surprised with every performer's worst nightmare says so much about him. This is the guy you want to hire. 👍

He may be established and everyone is saying great things in the comment section about how funny he is, but he didn’t make me laugh. His joke about his “blind” dad was the only thing that came close. So much of stand-up is so predictable and worn out. I feel like I’m fake-laughing because that’s the punchline and I want to be a good audience member.

And of course if you have watched way too much stand up comedy, you're gonna find a lot of recycled lines or not find it too funny anymore. I mean look at rap. There are only so many words to rhyme and things to talk about for the average person to relate. This type of comedy is the same, there are only so many ways to tell a joke for an audience that is relatable and funny. Btw I found him funny.

If he just retells this story as it happened in one of his actual gigs, with the fake comics before him getting huge laughters and he walking out to an audience of mimes and how everyone understood the joke but him, i'm 1000% sure it'd make his real audience laugh. he gained an extra funny story for his repertoir
It really is a great anecdote. You can see in the interview at the end that he's already told his friends about it and they've all thought it was a hilarious story.

Feeling “bad” about it shows that you’re compassionate. Telling someone that they are a comedian and that they should laugh about it is wrong and mistaken on so many levels. Goes to show the level of intelligence.

I think his heart broke when he didn't hear laughter. His whole life he has been making people laugh and just broke his heart when there wasn't any. I think it is a mean joke

So just being brutally honest, Jay wasn’t a good sport about it. His comedy was good, though he did seem a little full of himself in his comments before and after the show. Even if he was more okay with it after the fact, that doesn’t change his behavior during the prank. Not suggesting he didn’t have the right to be upset, but the way he showed he was upset was reminiscent of a child having a temper tantrum.
Another channel pulled the same prank on Lewis Spears, but they didn’t dress the audience as mimes, and they did it at a venue he has performed for before and enjoyed performing at, so he didn’t even know it was a prank till the reveal. Jay knew it was a prank, everyone was dressed as mimes, whereas Lewis thought he was just absolutely bombing the show. Granted, Lewis did get legitimately upset initially, but even when he was legitimately upset instead of raging, he came back out on stage and made jokes of it, and when he found out it was being filmed he wasn’t even upset.
Not saying anyone is a better comedian than anyone, but I am saying the way Lewis handled such a prank was way more mature and graceful.
I would love to see this concept with comedians who take it as a challenge to break the mimes
I was thinking that before I watched. Like an elimination thing where the more mimes you eliminate by making them laugh the better you did.

Jay did great. Extremely professional, had some good jokes, even got a mime to crack a little. Making a mime break character shows you're good. It's definitely one of those pranks you'd rather hear about than get pulled on you, but it makes a great story. Plus you could always prank your comic friends the same way.
If i was jay i would of busted out laughing as soon as I seen all those mimes.
I REALLY appreciate the fact you guys showed a portion of your call with him and let him explain himself. It seems like he really got inside his own head. I get the impression that when he got out there and saw all of the mimes, he realized he was being pranked but didn't want to run into an issue where he could later be accused of reneging on his contract.
He did his set-- and he did it well-- but it's easy to see how demoralizing that is to stand up in front of a silent crowd. Maybe he thought, "Well, I'm gonna defy expectations. I'm gonna pull a miracle here and make the mimes laugh!"
But they are professionally silent. So then he maybe starts playing out various worst-case scenarios in his head-- edited clips that show him performing in front of a full crowd that, nonetheless, remains completely silent. And when you start thinking like that, it really becomes a downward spiral and can be really hard to take a step away from it and realize how absurd the whole thing is.
And then, as he said, a few days go by, and he gets some breathing room, and he can see the intent was not malicious and that he wasn't the best version of himself.
All of that is to say, I get where he's coming from. I'm glad you guys cleared the air with him. I would absolutely love it if he included this experience in one of his future sets-- I laughed my ass off, and I admired his commitment to the set, but I'm not gonna lie every time the camera cut back to the mimes I absolutely lost it.
