The Swedish Royal Gards still exists as one of the oldest battlegroups in the world (I did my military service there) . The headoffice of The Royal Guards (Livgardet) lays today just north of Stockholm (Swedens capitol) in Kungsängen. In The Swedish version of this song (Which actually is a Christian hymn "Fairest Lord Jesus", The Caroleans (as the Swedish army was called ) are actually planning for another battle. The Swedish version of this song is called "Livgardet"

This is actually a depiction of the skirmish at Bender. It took place a few years after the battle at Poltava. The battles do have a connection to eachother though.
Importen to note is that even it they are fighting the Ottoman Janissary in the video, Sweden was not at war with the Ottoman empire (that is why it is just a skirmish). The Ottomans had orders to just apprehend the king and his men and the king was not to be hurt so the Ottoman really held back when fighting.
@@ThomasVanhala Except they did hurt the King in this skirmish. So not entirely sure that they were holding back per se, they just didn't have specific orders to kill him.

Part of the melody is from an old Swedish/Nordic hymn called "Härlig är jorden"/Glorious is the Earth, that's sometimes thought to be a crusader or pilgrimage hymn.
@@kingseb2252 I know. I was a joking. Sweden and the Ottoman empire were allied against the Russians. But Bender didnt happen out of thin air either, there must have been some friction.
Thanks for your reaction, back in the 1600-1700 we had the best soldiers in the world and the Royal Guards was the best of the best. You should come and see us here in Sweden sometime😃.
if you want a story of another badass royal guard watch the last stand. its about the swiss guard during the sack of rome in 1527. 119 men held off 40,000 pissed off mercenary army that wanted to kill the pope just long enough for him to escape to a nearby fortress outside the city. 42 men survived and escorted the pope to safety
This is a great statement of the history of the Swedish Royal Guard. Still ,as a swede, my heart goes out to all the US troops that has defended the world. 4 weeks ago I visited Omaha beach and the American graveyard in Normandie. There rests the heroes that saved the world. Thank you for a great video brother. Hugs from me and the Tornado in Sweden.
If you want to watch a miniseries watch: "Arn: The knight templar & The Kingdom at the roads end". It's fiction based on events of how Sweden was unified in the 12th century.
Fun fact during the time the swede wheres som warpigs ruler!! the army where alot of Finnish soilder, alot of Estonian and from region of Baltic contries...So not all Soldier where swedish...Royal guard perhaps, but mostly the rest no! and i am a swede :)
Ah yes, the royal guard, the one unit that has through history suffered the highest casualty ratings during campaigns since the king deployed them on the most dangerous side of the line. Therefore that resulted in high numbers of casualties but they apparently never broke their oath or the line.
So many people has made corrections and I concur with them but I need to ad some of the history here. Carl XII rules Sweden during the hard prelude the the fall of our empire time. But man did he give it a great shoot! So when Carls father, also named Carl since why have any fantasy died from what I think was cancer Sweden was at its height of power. But it was also surrounded by enemies. So with youg Carl XII just 15 years old, the old royal castle just destroyed by fire and political infighting over who should lead the government until the king was old enought things did not look good. Russia, Poland, the Prince of Sachsen in todays Germany and the Danish Kingdome that at this time included all off Norway, saw their chans and formed a alliance to destroy Sweden. Carl was just 15 but also had a habit of hunting (bears, you know a Chad when you see one) decided that this malarky of not being old enough was not something he agreed to and just took the crown and told people to sit down. He got crowned and collected all of the caroleanen armies and crushed all of the enemies on the battle field. He was renowned for fighting side by side with his troops. In the end there was only Russia left. And after what at first was a strong start something that is true about Russia became apparent. There is just so much of it! Logistics got harder and harder to maintained and then winter came. This is a prelude to both Napoleon and Operation Barbarossa in a way. After trying to get a final battler for months finally Carl could fight Tsar Peter and the Russians at Poltava. And everything finally broke. The logistics left the army with a lack of equipment and supplies. The weather turned on the Swedish forces as a minor snowstorm came in and limited the visuals and Peter had studied the Swedish battle tactics and would not fall in any of the traps Carl had used to beat much bigger armies. Poltava was the battle that broke the Swedish empire. The king was wounded and had the flee with what was left of the army to the Ottoman empire. All the defeated enemies redeclared war the king got stuck as a guest to the Sultan of the Ottomans. For years Carl tried to convince the Sultan to declare war on Russia and for year the Sultan did stall his answer. But at the end he decided against it and sent his army to expel the Swedish king from his settlement in Bender. This is where this video start.
This is only the second video i watch from this channel, but must give a little constructive criticism. The audio is a bit strange. Voice is low, music is loud the jump between is kind of shocking. But other then that, great job! 🤘😎

The sabaton history Channel has 2 videos on the specific song and the history of the royal guard.
Proud that I spent some years in Livgardet back in the early 2000´s, so much history.
The lyrics.
From the frozen North, they came
Fought for founding father's claim
It was then, their tale began
Trace their roots from sixteen strong
By their King where they belong
En tid, Av Krig (Eng. A time, of war)
Wherever he goes
Near or far, they are close
For the King of Sweden, they lay down their lives
For the Swedish crown, they stand
By their King at his command
Five hundred years, for the fatherland
Marching across the belt
Crushing blow at Narva dеalt
Livgardet, our royal guard
Sworn protectors of the thronе
Royal doctrine set in stone
For the crown you shall give your life
By traditions from the past
Swedish soldiers stand steadfast
I frid, och i strid (Eng. In peace, and at war)
And if one shall fall
Yet another heeds the call
For King and for country, they lay down their lives
For the Swedish crown, they stand
By their King at his command
Five hundred years for the fatherland
Marching across the belt
Crushing blow at Narva dealt
Livgardet, our royal guard
För Sverige i tiden
Dit konungen går
De gör vad som synes omöjligt
Vad än framtiden spår
(Eng. For Sweden in time
Where the king goes
They do what seems impossible
Whatever the future holds)
Wherever he goes
Near or far, they are close
For the King of Sweden, they lay down their lives
Still for the crown, they stand
By their King at his command
Five hundred years for the fatherland
Marching across the belt
Crushing blow at Narva dealt
Livgardet, our royal guard
