What you said in 36:30 about the cultural difference between the west and other cultures.
I've had a really heated argument with my friend (who is also an artist) about anime style and that person was very agressive when saying that anime style is inferior and wrong because it doesn't follow realism. When I tried to explain that it is a simplification of realism and an exagerration I was simply rejected. But I think what I really wanted to tell them was what you just said. What you said is very true. It's a cultural thing you have to be able to understand. If you don't, you'll degrade it because it doesn't meet the standards of reality

if your friend is not able to listen to your arguments, then its better for you to keep your ideas for yourself, some people are very closed minded and its impossible to make them change their mind.

False some people are just stupid. That and your ignorant pretentous attitude. The idea with anime is to take thing from reality, bend it and make it look cool. If it looks good then do it. That and a matter of prospective. Western ideas are do it exactly like reality or you fail. Japan use reality as a suggestion and then bend it a bit. That and the west thinks opinions have value so something has to be objectively bad. Not really everything is subjective and opinions aren't facts nor have value its distorted thoughts based on experience which means nothing. Therefore it isn't bad or inferior you just don't get it and believe in black and whites not greys. That and you haven't seen good anime. Berserk is amazing..

I learnt of so many new things in this video my head hurt and I had to take a break (I might just be bad though). The stuff he explained about the stylized/anime eyes are the kind you'd struggle to find in self study - you won't figure it out through imitation and most books, even good ones, skip past it. It makes sense, and it'll help immensely with developing your own style.

When I was young I drew a bit but didn't stay with it, in the late 60's music was the thing. Then about 10 years back I started to draw again and was starting to feel it, but got busy with other things and didn't stay with it, which saddened me, I lost something. About a year back I started to get back into my drawing and found I had lost most of what I had learned, it tore me apart. But then I found folks like you and a few others on TH-cam with great tutorials like this one and it gave me hope that I could find my soul again. I am 65 and retired and coming across great teachers and artist as yourself have been an inspiration, you think outside the norm and stretch the imagination not confined by rules of how to do something rather illustrating that anything is possible. I was a web designer and earned a good living for many years but everything is becoming more and more canned that one day monkeys will be building our sites. I would just like to say thank you and keep up the excellent work.

The part about breaking reality for the sake of style is my favourite. Some of my friends mock anime/manga/etc because of the large eyes and the array of eye and hair colors. But what they don't understand is that it's not meant be realistic, but instead done for purposes like to better convey emotion, or to better tell the story. People don't realise how much thought and practice goes into creating an anime/manga style.
In short: love your videos and this is by far one of the best art related TH-cam channels I've ever subscribed to.

Yeah, this is my biggest frustration with people that write off Anime as simply being lazy. Simplicity, more often than not, is the complete opposite of laziness.
In order to simplify something you have to have a pretty darn good understanding of it, regardless of what it is that you are simplifying. Being it an artistic style or even how a factory line runs.
There is also a marked difference between people that have copied the anime style and people that have evolved to that point.

I was wondering if you could make a video on how to draw emotion in eyes? Not just emotion but how to draw animated eyes that show feeling. There arent any good videos that explain this process but I'm hoping you could take it a step further and show us why the brow angles this specific way or why artists (manga to my preference) chose to illustrate anger in this way and how when youre looking down at a character instead of a convex line you see a concave eyelid and why is that. thank you I hope you see this and can get back to me :) Sycra

Your tutorials helped me a lot. I was having trouble trying to figure out how to wrap the eyelids around the eyeball, but then figured out if I draw where I intend the iris and pupil to point, it's a lot easier for me to figure out how to wrap the skin around! I still have trouble visualizing how the eyeball fits into the eyesocket and rests in the skull however, especially when the head is turned. I try to imagine it and my brain tries to go "No, fuck you, not doing that"

These books are a comprehensive guide to drawing manga, focusing how showing you and telling you at the same time. This book doesn't have generic meaning-less images like tutorials have. I own all five of the books, not physically I found then online for free, however I do plan to purchase these books once I save up. ( I can help you get these volumes free if you want.)

recently I've been having some kind of artistic epiphany in relation to the form of the head. I've just thrown those manga guidelines into the trash and started studying what real heads look like. I find myself really fascinating with brow ridges for some insane reason, haha. In a manga they usually don't even draw them, and now I've started drawing realistically I can't strop drawing heads with deep eye sockets and pronounced brows, it's like I'm obsessed! it's so fun, rediscovering it all :)

The Iris is acctually 2 muscles, one sphincter muscle just around the iris which contracts when the eye is exopsed to too much light. The other muscle is straight, which creates the lines in the iris, which contracts expanding the pupil and the sphincter muscle letting more light in. This happens when you are in a dark room or when you become aleart, like if you are about to get in a fist fight or run from a lion.

Drawing is all about expressing your thoughts and feelings through visual art , it is all abou bending reality...actually relity is overrated , because fantasy fuels creativity and creativity inspires us to imagine things...each one of us has a unique way of thinking and imagining things . This makes our styles unique from one another and it makes us different .

I know this is an older video, but shit, I'm here so. My advice to anyone like me, just starting out, with very minimal drawing experience, is that when you (because you will) get frustrated, use it. It's ok to be upset, Sycra is doing all these things very fluid, very quick and with ease. Sycra has also been drawing for like 15+ years. I have been drawing for 15 second compared to that. And with that said, going back 30 mins ago while he was running through the "Comics" section, I was like damn I can't do this, I can't get these angles right and I was getting annoyed. So (as he mentioned in another video) I just started drawing eyes, trying to get that fluid motion down, and each time I drew one, I could look at the previous and realize wow im getting better. I would look at them and work on the ones that weren't good and improve them. THATS muscle memory paired with your mind remembering. THATS how people like Sycra can draw like this for simple examples and they look like what we aspire to draw. Shit dude I even drew probably the best near realistic eye I have ever drawn in like 3 minutes from this video alone lol
TLDR Just keep at it, you will get there, and these are classroom quality videos so. (for free)

Something I love about anime style is that there are so many possibilities for eyes and faces and noses even. Like you don't have to stick to the norm of realistic eyes(yes, there are many types of realistic eyes as well but blah) but you can't exaggerate certain things as much as you can with anime style. Just my opinion.

Yes you can get away with a lot in manga, any stylization really, but stylizing in a way that's aesthetically pleasing is the real challenge. It's the reason why you see trends in stylization based on popular cartoons and anime by so many artists, going off of something that's already pleasing to the eye will automatically draw people in. The ability to design characters that break from these molds and still look good is a difficult skill to attain.

Hahaha that sounds hilarious! XD Well it really depends on the artist's style. Some styles (esp the cutesy or older sort) like to flatten faces a little too much. Others strike a balance between stylising and making sure the structures are still there (browbones, cheekbones, nose)

Yes! Finally! Someone else that agrees with me that mascara looks like spider legs. My friend sadly did not share my views when she asked me if her make-up looked alright

It'd be so great if one day you talked about Noses. Then Lips. Then maybe the jaw. I would love that so much ;_; Thank you so much for lending us your amazing artistic knowledge. :)

Will you make another video about the subject from realistic to cartoons to manga but for the faces or even the body ? I think this video has been the best at this point to answer my question about how to create style and not copy style

oh i see well what i still do is time to time draw a specific eye or nose from X manga or even so my own and save them so later when im stuck doing some drawing i can go back and take a look and get inspiration from older drawings. i guess it can also help if u think about the character you are drawing as a real person and give them a personality and match their looks to each specific eye, nose, etc even if its just a sketch it helps visualize it as a whole but im sure u've heard this before.. :P
