I feel totally ok that your videos might not be that teacher - student thing. Giving an insight in your learning process just works as well for a lot of us, I'm sure of it.
Continue with the coil technique if you feel comfortable with it. No need to mix it up unless you feel like you're not improving wit the technique you're using.
I don't use the coil technique anymore after I mastered perspective. No, I'm not here to show off or discourage you, just to let you know the importance of perspective.
Honestly this makes a lot of sense to me. I like to think I'm good with dynamic posing but the poses often frustrate me if I try to over complicate it by neck goes here, hands go here. I've had days where I just kind of scribbled and didn't fuss with things until the end and found it worked better. I know my proportions enough that I am going to give this a try, because I learned then for your videos, Proko and Andrew Loomis. Thanks again Sycra for saving my neck.
if you feel like a newb, you'll always feel like a newb. skill and practice are relative. and relative to basically everyone, you're amazing. I hope youre doing better, man
This has been suuuuper helpful man! I love it. It's just what I needed: a way to dumb down the figure to see the volumes while still having room to change it up when need be.
super coincidental that I stumbled onto this idea literally the same day this video was released. I actually was questioning whether it was a good practice or not as I struggle with dynamic poses as well. Thank you for the unexpected validation.
@@pezvonpez For sure, after 3 years of still drawing I ought to be better. I don't use this method always (I actually don't stick with any set method. It kinda depends on my mood) but this helps with adding and understanding volume.
Thanks this didn't really work for me, but I went to your older anatomy videos and practiced a lot and now I'm back here I was stagnating and wasn't really happy with my work but this really got me over that hump, thank you.
Glad to see your making tutorials again. I understand you are going through a learning process as of now but don't be afraid to share your journey even if you reverse your position on a certain method. I think I can confidently say we enjoy seeing your evolution, mishaps and all. It parallels our own development as artist and lets us know that it is okay to make mistakes or change your methods to continue to grow.
This video could not have come at a better time! as I am currently looking for ways to simplify the figure. I also just want to take opportunity to add that I have been watching a lot of your videos and they have really helped me get back into art again after not drawing for year! Thank you so much Sycra!Love, from South Africa.
Sycra, you are more than skilled enough to start your comic(s) you've been holding back on so long. Seriously. There are people with 10 years less experience than you who are publishing professionally. No matter what you're worried about - style changing during the course of the comic - art not being good enough to justify the great story - don't worry. You will always be dissatisfied with your current skill and you will always get better. If you don't start NOW, you never will.
I've probably been subscribed to you for around a decade at this point. Thanks to your vids, I've made significant strides as an artist. And this vid in particular is one I like to go back to every now and then, especially when I get lost in the weeds of details and anatomy, forgetting the fundamental flow of figure drawing and poses.
I needed to come back to say this is the single most important video to me in regards to drawing. After 2 years, this technique has helped me more than any other video on the internet.
This is the most helpful figure drawing tutorial for me; I've watched dozens in the last couple weeks. The magic of drawing the figure in this way, is that instead of first doing a gesture, then a stick figure, then blocking out volumes, this does the first three steps of a drawing all rolled into one. Therefore, the drawing retains it's rhythm lines and gestural movement qualities. I believe it feels and looks "fresher" and more animate for some artists to go about it this way. It is definitely suitable for my way of rendering as I'm sure it will be for many others. Perhaps, it is especially suitable for simpler, cartoon characters. There really is no need to divide the pelvis from the rib cage/upper torso. We have bodies which are essential bean shaped, or for skinnier people, sausage or hotdog shaped. As long as we know how we fold at the waist (mostly), these shapes will read well with the limbs attached to the sides. Very well done; excellent! BTW, I'd love it if you'd do one on simplifying drapery/cloth (apologies if you already have -- I shall look for it).
thank you! I've been painting nearly all my life (it's a family thing) but I never had the skill of drawing. I've been watching your tutorials for the last 5 months and I just completely filled a big sketch book -- this is a big deal for me because I've bought a lot of sketch books in my life but never once used the whole thing -- until now. I'm putting in the mileage, I'm working on faces and hands and bodies. I can, for the first time, draw stuff out of my head. All thanks to your tutorials! thank you so much! My favorite words are "hey everybody, Sycra Yasin here..."
I think combining the two methods would achieve the best of both worlds. Similar to that first sketch of the guy with his hands on his back. Drawing in the ribs and the pelvis shape seemed to lend for a more accurate figure while still being dynamic and interesting.
This is so helpful! I have always done the box/shapes method that people tell you to do and my pictures are so stiff and boring, I can't wait to try your technique!
I have been in a semi-artist block for years due to trying to make poses look dynamic and watching this I feel like it's finally starting to click. Thank you so much
I miss your tutorials. But most importantly. For long time now i've been thinking that i need to find my own method of learning that something might work someone else might not work for me. Now that artist who is better and doing this for living says the same thing gave me confidence that i was right to think so and don't have doubts about things im doing =) Thanks Sycra. Hopefully ill see your tutorials in near future again
This, man. This is the missing piece. This has helped me wrap my mind around conveying energy and motion. Thank you so, so much dude. Keep sharing what you know. Subscribed
Does Sycra teach anything else besides art? Whether he knows it or not, his style of teaching something leans toward mindful learning, which may be key to learning anything creative. Introducing a technique and then encouraging a student to customize, change, and adopt it to their style helps them learn faster than telling them, "this is how you do this". I'll be watching more videos from him; absolutely amazing teacher.
Learned a similar aspect in drawing and perspective, but was described as contour lines that implicated the volume of an object. Very good lesson to understand if you are trying to have more organic and fluent poses.
I found this video at the end of 2019 and began applying it and let me be honest it helped me both save time and get better with poses and anatomy. Thank you for this one Sycra.

Don't take it the wrong way but it almost feels like you are a constant beginner, trying to find the shortcuts to getting great results and writing them down, even giving them cool names. Thanks for the new video! I've really missed seeing your tutorials in my sub box. After going so long without watching your videos I've found even my digital sketching has become different. for so many years I took inspiration from you by having a really thin sketching brush in a lower opacity so that it darkens in the places I add more refinement but now I've taken to thicker brushes where I erase to add details. In regards to the poses thing, I still can't quite come up with my own poses that have strong foreshortening or that twist the body a lot, but I did end up coming across the more bubble like armatures rather than the stick figure ones, same as you. I'm excited for you to continue to discover this sort of thing and I always manage to find something useful in any of your videos. I have to say I miss the critiques the most though.
Reminds me of fashion illustration! I haven't drawn in a while, but I really liked the moment of 3:52 when you showed that quick fun spiral perspective sketch out.. I found it really exciting :) I'll have to pick up the pen!
really, really great tutorial, love it, art can be such a struggle to define what I want to say to the viewer, but really when it comes down to it , I think of it I guess it's what am I trying to see, and explore myself, which at times seems endless.
I love your channel and videos, as a fellow analytical artist. while I try to figure it out myself, your knowledge is very helpful in addition to my own. (you also made me decide to do some basic anatomy research and practice.)
Yooooo, it is good to hear your voice again - even if it sounds a little bit different. Also, it is cool how you came up with that new technic. I must say, I have been doing something similar for some time already, but it is cool to see other people's take on it too! That head torso relationship thing, though, yep, that surely will help - I would usually go for head > shoulders > arms, and only then, torso. Thanks Sycra! We all really missed you! - but really, yeah, don't worry about making videos, do what you think is the best and focus in improving yourself /o/
This is very helpful!! My figures would generally be decently proportioned, but pretty stiff :/ tested this method and it's definitely going somewhere for me! I'm glad you're figuring stuff out & I'm excited to see what comes out of it.
I've learned this from a other artist b4 but didn't rly work out because he didn't teach us to put the circles in the shape. Glad u talked Abt that. Thx as always
Actually an intresting way of thinking : "I need to let my brain to not bothering that much with details to make it as ditalized as I wanted" . That was hell of a genius .
oh man, this is fucking weird, a couple of days before I was searching for this video, I swear I did seen it in my sleep when dreaming, but I couldn't find it in your channel, now this pops out? holy crap, anyway, this does feel like a complete dinamic posing tutorial, nice and simple, good job as always dude.
Sharing your way to do the things is always a good way to teach us a new thing. I use the stick figure method to draw, but now I will start with more of those loose lines too ^^ maybe using both lol idk.. Let's see if it will work for me ^^ thanks for the tutorial!
I feel totally ok that your videos might not be that teacher - student thing. Giving an insight in your learning process just works as well for a lot of us, I'm sure of it.

I love your channel and videos, as a fellow analytical artist. while I try to figure it out myself, your knowledge is very helpful in addition to my own. (you also made me decide to do some basic anatomy research and practice.)
THANK YOU! I missed your videos soooo much! Love your channel, it helps me in many ways. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are awesome!
U are a blessing I swear ur anatomy videos are Extremely helpful! Thank u so much for ur explanation !!❤❤
This is very helpful!! My figures would generally be decently proportioned, but pretty stiff :/ tested this method and it's definitely going somewhere for me! I'm glad you're figuring stuff out & I'm excited to see what comes out of it.
This is actually REALLY COOL! Imma try this new stuff you teach!
Oh my God I've missed these so much
HE'S ALIVE
Sycra you helped me so much,I'm really grateful for your tutorials!
I've learned this from a other artist b4 but didn't rly work out because he didn't teach us to put the circles in the shape. Glad u talked Abt that. Thx as always
This technique is by far the best for form/poses drawing. It actually make drawing more simpler that stick figure or coil...for me anyway.
Missed your art videos, nice to have them again! :D
I really like using the triangle shapes so much better thanks for the tips
Welcome back my good fellow! Keep it up! You are The Man
Actually an intresting way of thinking : "I need to let my brain to not bothering that much with details to make it as ditalized as I wanted" .
I remember i would do something similar to this. Blocking in the general shape of the pose helped position things.
Sharing your way to do the things is always a good way to teach us a new thing. I use the stick figure method to draw, but now I will start with more of those loose lines too ^^ maybe using both lol idk.. Let's see if it will work for me ^^ thanks for the tutorial!
needed this one. nice man.
