Vir Sanghvi was our guest at the latest edition of ThePrint 'Off The Cuff'. In conversation with Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta, the noted journalist spoke about the credibility crisis in the Indian media and the changing environment in the media industry. He also spoke about how he managed newsrooms and how his career as a journalist gave him opportunities to interact with different kinds of people.
Sanghvi is one of India’s best-known journalists and has tracked politics, business, society, travel and food. The conversation focused on his now four-decade-long career that has straddled print, television, books and new media.

That is a norm. They want to give credit only to MMS because as they themselves said they have their biases and objectivity in reporting is not there. MMS was always a follower, had it not been for PVN he wouldn't have been able to take the right steps. MMS's legacy will remain having lost 10 years of the nation overlooking rampant corruption by Congress and keeping quiet and being a remote controlled PM.

Completely agree that physically printed media such as a newspaper or a magazine is in terminal decline and will continue to do so but quality journalism will survive and thrive. This is why I pay for thePrint for my india news and WSJ (Via employer) and WaPo for news in the US.

Remember as a technology consultant working early 2000 in the Middle East had a big culture clash as they never expected younger Indians to talk back debate argue with the Arab boss in govt - Something which the older Indians working for donkey years never did -Once the project was over we were ready to move to the next project or country which was a shock to them they thought we would live there for ever .
Same once flying into JFK on Emriates , as per security we had to show our passports to TSA staff after checking few Indian passports he said, why you guys don't fly with Air India? To which I said," we doing well so fly with the best Airline in the world" .
I still like the old India speak good English better than the Brits, secular something which my home city Singapore vibes very strongly condemns racial slur very strongly and is a melting pot investment destination .Something which has worked very well for Singapore ,there is no discussion about politics and politicians very approachable and not demi gods like India.

Mr. Vir Singh , hope you get to read this
I beleive they call journalism 4th pillar of democracy, and so it is very important that it is non-bias, neutral and fair. You can have your own opinions but you need to keep it to your self as it might influence your readers. And if it doesn't it is good but it also implies you don't trust the intelligence of your audience. Also understand most people hate extreme views and biased views (like Arnab, Rajdeep.....)
If you say that you can have your opinion and display it to the public is like a judge having his own opinion and passing a judgement without respecting the laws of the country. News media can be considered as important as our justice system as it can influence minds of our public
Hope to hear a reply from you if you disagree. Thanks 🙏

Not sure why the sin of communalism is always on the shoulders of BJP. Those seeds were sown far back in time going back to when for someone unknown reason many Hindus got massacred in the name of a random caliph in turkey. Till we don’t apportion part of the blame to Indian Congress, we are not going out of this struggle. True secularism cannot just be responsibility of one community while the other community behaves as they want. It’s the combined responsibility of all stakeholders.

How many people have been to the Doon School that Sanghviji mentions ? I don't believe people are angry at Doon schoolers. Only a few 1000 went there in the entire history of Doon and how does that matter ? What matters is Sanghviji belonged to the ecosystem which was very powerful and did rub each others back and looked down upon others. Today due to social media the field of expression of our thoughts have become much more democratized than it used to be back then. So suddenly Sanghviji feels this middle class hates the older middle class. There is no such hatred. People are tired of the narrative that has been pushed down their throat for 70 years by the Congress-Left govt at center. And people like Sanghviji and other journalists and historians specially have perpetuated some myths as reality. Now the younger people are seeing that "there is more to the story than what these sol called older middle class people" wanted them to know.

Sir None of the Indians say anything against Manmohan Singh the Finance Minister. But everybody speak against Man Mohan Singh the Prime Minister. Because Our expectation from Dr Man Mohan Singh the Prime Minister was more as we had enjoyed the benefit of him being the Finance Minister providing us this life which I as a child may have only dreamt of or seen in some movie. When Manmohan Singh was the finance minister then Gandhi Family's interference was not there on Indian Politics and that is why they could deliver but during his Prime ministerial tenure he was hand cuffed so that he cannot take any action, his mouth was taped so that he cannot speak and he was made a puppet which people of India could not accept and that is the reason of BJP's growth. You people are the intellectuals to whom we looked at in the 90s. So think sincerely and if possible discuss internally if not publicly "is Indian voter angry on Congress or on the Gandhis".

As long as you describe some tv channel as 'Ravan channel' and highlight your political bias excessively, while downplaying or blacking out good things done by political dispensations not to your likings (as perceived by us) your chances of getting subscription will perhaps be limited. Public are not so blind as not able to see through the agendas of (big as well as small) news houses .
I am 76 years old and stopped buying news papers years ago in disgust, after seeing printed news in such a distorted and biased fashion.
Your analysis is good and I listen to it sometimes. But I shall subscribe (by paying) your channel happily , when you present news in a somewhat balanced fashion.
Today I am happy with news headlines and some internet news portals available online.
I agree, newspapers(print) industry is in trouble. Electronic media is in a somewhat better position.
Today, I can choose news to my liking, not chosen or highlighted by you. So you are in trouble.
It is a pain to see how newspapers, even tv channels , black out negative news or incompetence of governments, for fear of loosing advertisements.

But when it comes to SUCCESSFUL economic reforms of 1991, these people give all credit to then FM Manmohan Singh, forgetting Boss of Manmohan then was sh Rao.

Greetings to the two media stalwarts, on one stage so to speak, who I have followed these past two decades. You are the best bet to address, my question. There was a time in the 1960s, my school days, when the refrain was “Oh if it is in the papers (Newspapers) then it must be true”. Alas! We can’t sat the same about the media these days - the reasons for this media decadence and reduced confidence in it are many and recognized.
What can the media do to regain the lost confidence?

Just read why 1st amendment of our constitution took place as there was a news magzin ee from kerala was one of the reason . Also just check the benefits editors and other press people from various goverments to judge . It is very easy and conveinant to put light on others by calling "Godi Media" . @@Vizorfam DB I endorse that SG has come into his own and exudes class. I would not have said that of him before he started The Print. The print has varied programmes with the intention of disseminating information rather than trying to influence.
Having said that, in my comment I did not mean that the media should just keep asking questions for the the sake of exhibiting “free speech”. In China nobody can ask Qs, so the Govt goes ahead and does what it wants. China is far ahead than many of the advanced democracies in its economic outlook. The other extreme is excessive freedom when nothing constructive can happen as questions are raised and protests are held for anything and everything. I wonder whether the Nation is aware that India has a reputation of being a laggard democracy, with no progress as it should have We do not want to be another China without any freedom, so to speak. Neither do we want to be a democracy where only questions are raised.to impede progress.
Media has to always present a balanced view. The Print is close to doing it.

Even fewer respect Rahul Gandhi deep inside but are too incompetent to say that. Billi ke gale mein ghanti kaun bandhe.
