It is a rare thing to come across a technocrat who speaks so passionately and intelligently on the pressing economic and development issues of our day.
I congratulate Neha Bothra for her precision-phrasing of remarkable questions to Sanjeev Sanyal. They elicited remarkably insightful responses. It was akin to a Dave Brubeck Jazz Concert that concluded too soon. Thank you for this piece, Neha Bothra and Sanjeev Sanyal.
Decline of the Calcutta City (Kolkata) under the Communist rule and the Socialist Congress at Delhi resulting in the economic crisis in the 1989-90. I have seen these and experienced these in these cities. Dr. Sanyal is very correctly putting the issues and suggesting remedies for the development and growth of the country and the world as a whole. Good to see him in the Prime minister's team.
Nice to hear Sanjib. I can not but fully agree when he says "decline of Calcutta (for that matter West Bengal during Communist regime. Unfortunately, the decay has reached its nadir at the present political dispensation.

It is bad to say, but it is true that Independence of India ruined Bengal as the anti-Bengalis took over India after 1947. Hindu majority areas like Jessore, Khulna, Barisal and Buddhist majority area Chittagong Hill Districts went inside East Pakistan, but Gandhi-Nehru-Patel never objected. Nehru made a treaty with Liaqat Ali to expel the Hindu Bengali refugees from India and stopped their stipends. Nehru declared West Bengal a developed state and refused to allow any central industrial projects for West Bengal. Durgapur steel plant came in exchange for Dhanbad coal fields. Morarji Desai refused to give any contracts for the large private sector industries in West Bengal. He asked all banks and foreign companies to shift their head offices from West Bengal to Bombay area. YB Chavan removed all defense related industries from West Bengal to his home state. Krishnamacharya equalized the freight rates for all industrial inputs all over India thus destroying all natural advantages of all Eastern states. Bhutalingam removed all railway related industries to South India. Kumarmagalam removed a part of the Durgapur Steel plant to Tamil Nadu. Maran closed down Dunlop in West Bengal but kept it alive in Tamil Nadu with government subsidies. CPIM and TMC also destroyed West Bengal with great violence so that most private sector industries went away. The leaders of CPIM are also anti-Bengali, as none of their buildings are named after any Bengali Communist leaders. TMC is all for the Muslim illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
roads and contruction is a winner,so can be defence exports, but i believe creating jobs is not as difficult as the govt thinks,i have an idea wherein indian educated homemakers who have left their it jobs or other professions can be engaged both in india and abroad in the teaching profession.these women can work from home and part knowledge to students or young professionals their skills, this will result in added incomes for these untilised assets of the indian economy and help in job creation.Even schools in smaller towns can be imparted computer education using these women as teachers online.tcs, infosys wipro all can be pooled in with govt giving grants for the programme and employing all this talent.
It surprises me how channels are so careless about their anchors. The least you could do is, hire someone who is better informed, asks more sensible questions, and please, doesn't lisp.
Jobless growth is reality. When its pointed out , That does no mean its anti growth or we dont need more growth. India has huge issue of under employment and unemployment. India growth is mostly by favorable demographics. India is adding more people to workforce every month so obviously GDP will increase every year. Look at GDP per capita and per capita income its slower growth than Bangladesh in last 10 years. Again Bangladesh is also poor and has no advanced industries still they have managed better growth and human development metrics. Bangladesh has moved ahead of India in per capita income, gdp per capita and most importantly HDI ranking. They used to be far behind 20 years ago. India maybe 5th largest economy but it cant manufacture its own rifle for its army. Thats bcoz it lacks the skills, its true with everything from automobiles to drugs to cell phones most of the parts/components are imported. France is 8th largest economy but they make Rafale jets , India cant even make a rifle thats bcoz on per capita ranking India is 130 in the world. All countries below are African and other poor countries. Its true 5th largest economy but thats the output of 1.4 billion people and UK is also producing 3.5 trillion GDP with 60 million people. One exception is IT industry which has done very well with $350 billion in exports. IT industry employs only 5 million but it generates so much wealth bcoz its an educated workforce at lower cost. In Good and services india has a $200 billion trade deficit, its IT services trade surplus which is helping to cut the deficit but note IT output is from only fraction of its population about 0.1%.
Enjoyed the discussion. It's always a privilege to listen Sanjeev.

Good discussion but my god the editor needs to stop switching to the interviewer every 5 seconds. Like focus on who is speaking.

but the govt budget expenditure on education needs to be raised for this programme to be fruitful.
Just talking talking without an end, but NO RESULTS!!
In GDP of India: Current and historical growth rate, India's rank in the world article you have shown wrong map of India . Please correct it

11:26 - You don't have a demographic dividend. Just look at your national average IQ.
