Nice job Sam! I built a sail cover for my 37' in October, and then took it apart , flipped it over and made a stackpack in December. All sewing was done in the cabin of the boat, with a 1958 Singer, and all with a freshly shredded shoulder put back together with a titanium plate and 10 screws on the clavicle. I am more traumatized by the sewing project than the shoulder injury🤪 What a huge project. ... You've got a nice workshop and sewing machine!
Outstanding craftsmanship with the sail pack Sam! Looks great and some nice custom features. If you carry around that sewing machine and some sewing materials you can probably use that as a great source of income during your sailing adventures. Looking forward to seeing Pickled Herring ready to splash into the water again soon! Thanks for sharing!
Having two hands, one eye and two thirds of a brain gives you all that capability and even more. Unless you are one of those saying "I can't cook" loudly at any opportunity given.
All the projects are really starting to make this boat your own! I'm excited to see it all done! The shop is making for a great space to complete all of these projects! I'm so happy to see it all working out for you!
The sewing machine has to have earned its keep many times over. Sam's mastery over it is very impressive. I am sure he makes it look easier than it actually is.
sometimes for zippers I like to sew two sides together, then sew the zipper to both sides, then seam rip the line where I stitched both sides together. that way your material laps over the zipper on both sides without any gaps or overlap.
The overlap is a must for protecting the sail in foul weather or when not in use. The side by side would let rain and dampness in. His choice was for the better.
Nice, while underway that zipper string can be replaced with a ship shape sinnet. You can refer to your Ashleys for proper details on construction. A vessel as ship shape as yours deserves such refinement. Well done,
San, you a handy man my friend always a pleasure watching your videos. Even though YT recommends other sailing related videos I only watch your sailing related channel.
What skills! I wish I had the patience to do a project like that. The Turtle looks like a snapping turtle. Its best to release him/her in a swampy area. Great work, Sam.
You're doing a good job there Sam nice nice nice can't wait to see you get back in the water Miss watching your videos selling God bless you buddy be safe from REI Garrett Roseville California USA
Great content bro. One day I'll circumnavigate the world with my sailboat. But for now I'll just try to get some glimpse about sailing. Kudos from the Philippines 🙌❤️
My personal trick on zipper pulls is to give them to Dad. He is like the janitor in "Mrs. Toggle's Zipper"... Or whatever that book was I read to you when you were small.
Saw you on our local news (wcti12)...that's how I got here...now I wanna see you sail across the Atlantic. I've been to gulf stream fishing so I know a little bit about what you are fixin to go through. Happy sailing from Morehead city nc
Omg, I would love to go to England let us know how long it takes. I just read your storie on channel 12 news. I hope you have a safe trip, and good luck from New Bern NC!
Sam. You know whenever I click on my subscriptions, and see you've just posted, YOU MAKE MY DAY!!!!! So just smile and know, (it's not in a weird way), I just wish I were you and young again!👍👍
I do something similar with large scale Marquees..as soon as I saw you lay that fabric out I thought you might make one wrong because first time I did the same .
You mentioned in a recent video that you used carbon fibre on the strengthening where your stays that support the mast terminate at deck level. I did see an interesting video clip of the complete construction of a plywood hull - from scratch, covered by fibreglass. Would it be worth using carbon fibre matting instead of the usual glass mat? I imagine that carbon fibre weave would be lighter and stronger (less prone to impact cracking?) than the usual glass mat, but then what do I (as a retired Chartered Accountant) really know?
I use polyester. Its got some uv resistance but will usually fail before the canvas. The really UV resistant thread is supposed to be kind of hard to sew with so I haven’t tried it.
@@samholmessailing not sure if this would help, but have you considered a waterproof seam sealer like the stuff that's used for tents? That could help extend the life of the thread.
Hi Sam, great video thank you! We watched it many times 😅 We are in the process of making the sail pack and wanted to have the pockets as well 😃, what is the mesh material you used and where did you get it?
Buying that shop was a stroke of genius.
I wholeheartedly agree--- and am wholeheartedly insanely jealous
Word! Shop is buttery
I have never seen a video with this many likes and zero dislikes! Most genuine guy on TH-cam.
that baby tortoise is the cutest thing I've ever seen
Another good video.
I liked the turtle moments included & the subtle jazz music was a nice touch.
I like the music. Not too over powering or loud. Just blends into the video. 👍
Wish I lived closer, I would adopt that little sweetie.
Nice to know I'm not the only one who makes mistakes like making two of the same side.
just finished this project this winter with sunbrella for our Triton. Consider inserting dowels in your pvc for added strength
Great idea
Cowlings are a good idea. Had the pvc pipe break in mine.
Great investment for your sea crossing. Thanks for sharing.

Sam looks like he genuinely enjoys the craft of sewing.
Can't wait to see the boat out on the water!
It's amazing the skills we get....I sewed my 1st sail covers...oh, were they bad. Enjoy your channel.
Sam the sewing man. Another great video. Your extremely versatile Sam.
can't wait till you are out in the restored boat
Tradesmen/skilled work influencers; this is exactly what the world needs more of!
Yet more evidence Sam is a Disney Princess
Sam? ..... are you a genius or one of those master savants?? You are so capable in all aspects, how does that happen? Incredible to watch you!
Having two hands, one eye and two thirds of a brain gives you all that capability and even more. Unless you are one of those saying "I can't cook" loudly at any opportunity given.
Dad and I should surely get a little of the credit...?
Who dat?

Great one Sam. Your judicious use of music is appreciated!
The sewing machine has to have earned its keep many times over. Sam's mastery over it is very impressive. I am sure he makes it look easier than it actually is.
Sam, your talents are truly amazing. I love your thought process and I cannot wait to see you back on the water.⛵️⛵️😊
Great idea with the pockets. Now for a couple of pouches for your lines back at the cockpit...
As always, Sam, thanks for the video. I like watching all the tinkering and sailing.
I checked with some biologists, and they think you found a baby eastern mud turtle. Good job!
sometimes for zippers I like to sew two sides together, then sew the zipper to both sides, then seam rip the line where I stitched both sides together. that way your material laps over the zipper on both sides without any gaps or overlap.
I learned that method. Works well.
The overlap is a must for protecting the sail in foul weather or when not in use. The side by side would let rain and dampness in. His choice was for the better.
Always listen to your little sister....
I would've never thought of sewing zippers that way. Thanks!
Little snapping turtle. Back on the farm I grew up at we used to have these things all over the place in the most peculiar places

Shop looks great! How bout a shop update vid!
Zippers are such a pain. Some kind of industrial strength velcro seems like a worthwhile experiment, or even just old fashioned frogs.
I favor the overlap too for weather exposure. You did an awesome job, as always.
Sam you have way more patience than I do. I am sure I would be pulling my hair out trying to do what you have done with the canvas. Good job.
The external pockets for reefing line storage are inspired. I’m going to add them to our sail pack!
Good work Sam you're quite the seamstress
Nicely done. You should do a detailed video on sewing new cushion covers - an issue every sailboat owner winds up dealing with at some point.
My cushions covers are in good shape but i’ve got a video on that if you go back a year or two
Outstanding work, your skills are amazing!
I really enjoy your videos. Your versatility is amazing. And such an uplifting attitude! Thanks for sharing with us!!!!!
Great sewing job!! You are so skilled.
Good show Sam. One trick is using a stapler for making seam cuffs V your little clamps. Of course staple away from your stitch line.
Thats brilliant. I will have to try it.
Awesome work Sam 👍👏
Please look after tiny turtle, maybe he/she needs to go outside where there's food?
Nice Work, Brother! I'm Not A Sailor But Love Your Channel! 😎💥👊
"everything is easy", haha, bravo.
Well Done!!
Great job Sam!
Sam you haircut looks so good.
Love these videos, Sam. The anticipation for splashing the boat and the big journey is starting to build!
Love the jazz in the background. Also reminds me and makes me miss the mini sax haha. Love the videos man making me excited to see the voyage!

I think you could make good money doing this for other sailors ANYTIME Sam. That looked really nice when you were done.
Dude , you are kickin ass !!! CHEERS !

Good work Sam! She's coming together
Looking great!
Baby Gamera visited your shop, surely that's good luck!

Since you’re not too busy you should record some jazzy interludes on your sax to back up your sewing scenes.
Why use crap copyright free when you can do it yourself?! ; )
Not too busy ??!!
you should have given the turtle a new home :)

Awesome work!! How’s the healing coming along, not that it’s any of my business, just praying it’s successful 🤙
Never thought of using a soldering iron like that
It works great. Way cheaper than the hot knife designed for it.

Will a regular sewing machine be able to handle that fabric?
