I'd agree with the previous comments about not stressing about feeding the media monster. It's seems to me that there's universal goodwill towards you Sam so please enjoy the process and share when you're ready.
Videos just like this are perfect! This right here is why I say you have the best sailing channel on YT... straight forward, no BS, shows the good and the bad, and hides nothing. Keep it up man!
Starlink is not available for mobile usage yet, your "home dish" will only be active around the billing adress. Mobile Starlink is coming though! They also require a substancial amount of power to run
Yea we tested it at and around the marina and those little motors in there just couldn’t keep up in any movement at all. And it burned HUGE battery power trying
Another thing to note is that your Starlink dish is tied to a particular “cell”. I.e. if you move your dish too far from your service address it will fail to connect without SpaceX reprovisioning you.
Go with the tried and true Iridium Go. Starlink will not be viable as a moving mobile platform for many months or longer-at the earliest. It will also draw a lot of power and will probably never be suitable for a 28ft. sailboat. Don’t mess around when you are talking about obtaining reliable (possibly lifesaving) info at sea.
You don't need the muffler, its just a little noisier if you're outside. The fuel pump works upright, but it supposedly last longer and has less air bubbles in the fuel if you install at an angle. I'd buy a back up fuel pump, only about $15.
You bought a double wall through hull fitting but then ran the exhaust pipe directly through the bulkhead? you also attached it directly to the hull in places. Unless I am not seeing that correct?
That's a good plan Sam about running the place out you'll have more income coming in more money to travel with and do better repairs on your boat while you are sailing and the paint job on the boat looks really nice clean do what you feel is best Sam your project your work anyting you feel comfortable with don't worry about what people think can't wait to see you back on the water my friend God bless you and be safe Sam and thank you for sharing your videos they're very knowledgeable from Ray Garrett in Roseville California USA
You should tweet at Musk or tag Starlink about trying to document your Journey of solo crossing and using Starlink. He seems to often look at thing like that and he might hook you up.
I think we are all here for the journey. It’s awesome to see what you’ve done and what you’re planning to do! I love watching someone following their dream
Don't stress over pleasing us, Do what you gotta do to make the best use of your time because We Will be here to watch your videos if you change and post them every 5 days or whenever. Looking forward to seeing the May 3rd Launch. What are you going to do to the shop when you leave? Awesome Videos, Thank you for sharing your, Sam Holmes style, Sailors Life 👍⛵👍
PersonallyI think their just fine. If your gonna solo sail then time will not allow a fancy production effort. Those subscribed are far more interested in content then a fancy presentation. So just go with your gut feeling and you’ll do just fine with daily or weekly updates. I do like the idea of a sequential number to each video, far easier to see and know if I missed one.
I love the videos Sam. I installed the same diesel heater on my boat. Easily one of my favorite creature comforts. From what I understand, the angle on the fuel pump allows the diesel to lubricate the piston appropriately. It will work in any orientation, but without the correct angle it may wear out prematurely. Keep up the good work!
If you turned the bolts around on your sewing machine such that the heads of the bolts were facing the floor, you wouldn't have to lift the table up so high AND the threads of the bolts won't scrape!
I have used both the Airtronic and Chinese heaters and found that a long exhaust will carbon up the combustion chamber fairly quickly. I found that if you run the heater at max temperature for about 10 minutes at regular intervals and I also mix 1 litre of kero with 20 litres of diesel to help burn of excess carbon. These heaters a easy to service but you need to replace both the gaskets at reassembly and also have a special plug socket to remove the glow plug. The screen in the glow plug chamber is a bit of a bugger to remove but they do clog up with carbon fairly quickly especially when the heater is at low speed and will stop the heater from starting. This is usually accompanied with blue smoke coming from the exhaust at the ignition sequence. I usually service my heaters at about 1000 to 1500 hours, to give you an idea of the service life. I think the quality of your diesel could be a lot better than ours in Australia so this will affect all the above problems. These heaters are excellent . I hope this info is of some use . Fair winds
Hi Sam, look at Raspberry pi 4 + moitessier hat 2 (radar, ais, and more...) with openplotter and opencpn like your friend. Cheap to setting. You can also have the autopilot with open py pilot. For maintenance or problem, you can buy 2 times to have sav items. Sorry for my poor english.
Star link is not a mobile service. It's to be used where you registered it. I've checked. I'm on the list for the Philippines where we have several homes we move around to and wanted to be able to go from one to another with it.
Wrap your exhaust with header wrap from any auto parts store. It will get real hot otherwise. I wrapped mine 5 years ago and you can hold on to it and never burns you. good luck
i had good luck exterminating carpenter bees by finding where they nest in the evening filling their hole with foam killer then sealing it with expanding foam. a long staw fed into the holes helps too. do it in the evening or night when they are nested. you are the best on youtube.
keep the videos raw. feels more on your toes and unpredictable. thats why i stay watching. to many sailing channels that make things to glamorous on camera. this is the one were we all can feel dirty after watching a hard days of your work. keep it up man!
Sam, I own a tv production company. I enjoy the Vlogs just as much the edited weekly segments. If the Vlog's allow for more content. I'm all for it. It's a better window into what you are thinking and doing. It seems very appropriate. Especially ramping up for your Atlantic crossing!! Keep them coming!!
I bought one of those mufflers, and it is nowhere near airtight, as you discovered. I am wrapping mine in several layers of fiberglass exhaust lagging over heavy aluminum foil. The German muffler from Espar is around $65!
Starlink is not a portable access. Meaning you can access the net at your home port but when you are crossing the Atlantic you cannot access the net. Nor while in Europe etc.
Diatomaceous earth sprayed/ puffed into those bees holes is a safe way to get rid of them without toxic chemicals....but those bees are really good pollinators.
For those carpenter bees, try putting up a fake wasp nest. You can make them from bags or crochet them (or have someone crochet one for you) or buy one real or fake off e-bay or Amazon.
Generally Not bad video, 1st I've watched in a while. Fully outfitting the shop, and going to rent it, keeps occupied (- carpenter bees /wasps... ). A ship to and reship/ mail to address... SkyNet is Future, afaict. And iridium? Seems Slow $. Check out Delos sat on back, see if they will go even smaller. Need more solar, batteries and water maker... You got a delivery & splash date, moving along... Exhaust / heater near fuel line seems problematic...
04:00 - A tennis racquet is what you want for carpenter bees. I cut the infestation in my barn last year after only a few weeks of consistent runs with mine. A fly swatter will only knock them around. The racquet will cut them in half.
This is great, I love the free-form style. Don't think too hard about the channel, make it what you want it to be and make the videos you want. You'll enjoy it more and people can tell. Keep up the awesome work man! Looking forward to this Summer's adventures.
Something to think about. If you get the Star link and place it on your stand you might have to gimble it, If the boat is rocking/rolling it's not going to stay locked on.
this type of video is how it all started for you and seems to be just fine to me. anyone who ever edited knows editing is very time consuming and a headache too.
I second this. I prefer the raw. Its more personal and intimate. all these yahoos with their constant Drones and Boom Poles, gimmick this and that, plus all the constant noise pollution of a soundtrack. I mean everyone once in a while sure. I like that one thru hikers channel called Homemade Wanderlust. She is a pro with editing, but still has a personal intimate style. She is good with the music and photography, but most these people aren't anything without their gimmicks. We like Sam cause he reminds us about the glorious richer simpler days of yore.
FYI Starlink is NOT mobile. if the antenna moves even a fraction of an inch it causes the receiver to reset. further if you move the antena to far from your registered location it dosn't work. ( I have read this on many forums, I recommend you research this before getting it.
Hope your shop is insured. You've got a lot of money in tools sitting around there..... Consider requiring your tenant to get renter's insurance as well.
When crossing Atlantic ocean I was able to upload pictures with Iridium go. Make sure to have external antenna (not the one build in). I was using the predict wind for weather.
Starlink is not available as a mobile setup and the constellation is like 9000 Satellites away from being completed and providing full global coverage. This is also exactly why they only allow stationary use and even then you currently experience signal drops because its very far from being done. If you want something that works everywhere and does it right now you got basically no other choice then iridium go
Even when starlink is open for mobile use, the current client can not keep a persistent connection while underway. Hopefully one day! You may as well get the iridium now and get familiar with the system.
Drawbacks of Starlink have been posted a few times, but I don't know if anyone has pointed out that there's very little chance that Starlink will ever work "at sea". They were approved for ground-to-satellite-to-ground communication. Essentially, if you're far enough away from a ground station that your signal would have to bounce between Starlink satellites to reach shore, that's not likely to happen any time soon. I think I read somewhere that about 20-25 miles from shore is about the best you'll be able to get.
I used to paint boat bottoms on big Wooden Boats when I was a kid and we would put a torch in the holes where the worm's lived. It would kill the worm and char the h o l e so they wouldn't come back there.
The terrestrial starlink dish has a 90W power draw so it might not be feasible for marine conditions. Maybe even the marine version has some hefty base requirements.
Starlink is geo fenced for now. I think its around 40km last time i saw someone on reddit testing. Its probably not going to work super well on a boat unless the boat is super still probably mostly on a mooring, because it will have to adjust a lot. I just got starlink hooked up but let me know if you have any questions. I signed up last august for the beta and got accepted in Feb.
I use those heaters to keep warm under the boat cover during the winter. That exhaust hose gets hot enough to melt plastic and start wood on fire. Trust me. You want that entire run insulated with at least 1/2" thickness of fiberglass insulation. Leaving it exposed anywhere along its length is inviting a disaster. Please fix this!!!!!
My number just came available for StarLink. It is not mobile, you have to be in proximity of a land-unit which is why the roll out is being done by geographic area. From what I understand mobile StarLink is on the horizon but not anytime soon.
just an FYI the starlink will not work out to sea like other satellite Internet until they re-launch all their satellites with the lasers to communicate between them they need to have a ground station quite close to where you are so it will not work once you’re 30 miles out to sea and the current dishes do not work with any motion so it will not work
Got a friend with NC SMAT thats testing the Starling right now and said he’s getting 80-130 mbps! He’s now testing reliability especially under less than clear conditions
SAM! get a large paper grocery bag.crinkle it up, fill it with plastic bags to fill it out. spray paint it grey. hang it up where the bees are. they will all begone in 12 hours. bees will think its a hornets nest. all bees are terrified of hornets..it works. I've done it!
Are you sure it works with carpenter bees ?(I think that's what Sam said) I have a lot where I live. BTW, a tennis or racquetball racket is what you need to get the buggers. They hover in your face, and whack! Split 'em in 2. Carpenter bees are strong too.
Sam, I think daily videos is a great idea. Your daily idea may spread through out u tube once others see the practicality of it. Maybe a patient would be in order. Btw will you be having a water maker for your long voyage? I don't remember if you had one for your Hawaii trip or not. So are you sailing back or are you going to fly back? ⛵
Great video like always. Just wondering about one thing, you sure it's safe to have the exhaust so close to anything whit fuel in to? And the hole through the boat is just wood on the inside, you sure it won't get to hot??
If starlink isnt available, you should get an INMARSAT BGAN (international maritime satellite, broadband global area network), with auto tracking satellite antenna (727).
Is Starlink up to global coverage now? Checked into it about half a year ago and the devices were geo-locked to home address, lost signal due to movement when mounted on a stationary revving truck had no coverage beyond 400km (or maybe miles) from a ground station because the satellites were not linked to each other. Figured it'd be a at least a year or two before it'd be suitable for marine use, but since then I've heard they've gotten the inter-sat link to work and launched at least some new models with those capabilities.
Still can't get over how much work Sam does with one hand while holding the camera in the other.
You know he can raise the mainsail with one hand with a beer in the hand. He did it in another video.
I'd agree with the previous comments about not stressing about feeding the media monster. It's seems to me that there's universal goodwill towards you Sam so please enjoy the process and share when you're ready.
Yeah. The thumbs down, few tho they are, baffle me. Sam's the nicest human on the planet it seems.
Since you aren't really posting "how to" videos I think doing stuff sequentially like this is totally fine.
Videos just like this are perfect! This right here is why I say you have the best sailing channel on YT... straight forward, no BS, shows the good and the bad, and hides nothing. Keep it up man!

Came here to say this!
Go with the tried and true Iridium Go. Starlink will not be viable as a moving mobile platform for many months or longer-at the earliest. starlink is presently geofenced, if you move off your shipping address it wont work. Mobile isnt allowed ... yet...
Get a plug for the heater exhaust on the stern. A following sea might douch water in.

It’s always a good day when Sam posts a video. Been my favorite for awhile now.

I like this new format. Do as you see fit with your work schedule.
Any video from Sam is a winner! This style is best, very honest! Inspirational to! Get those little jobs done! Go sail!
Paint job is awesome!
I can’t wait until starlink is available in the ocean....game changer for sailors and their TH-cam channels
Sam, the reason for the hole in the muffler is to drain condensation. If you plug the hole, the muffler will rust through prematurely.
If you turned the bolts around on your sewing machine such that the heads of the bolts were facing the floor, you wouldn't have to lift the table up so high AND the threads of the bolts won't scrape!
Sam, you are a very lucky man. You have the boat, that beautiful shop, and the brains to make it all work. Color me green with envy!

Harbor Freight has a mobile machine base that I used for my industrial sewing machine. Cheap and easy.
Gonna check out that drill press clamp. Good luck with remaining on schedule for your departure date!
Love what you are sharing with us Sam, like others have said, just be you, that’s why we are here. 👍
keep the videos raw. feels more on your toes and unpredictable. thats why i stay watching. to many sailing channels that make things to glamorous on camera. this is the one were we all can feel dirty after watching a hard days of your work. keep it up man!
Sam this works man. Just keep going!
I have never gone sailing and know nothing about it but youre so positive and i love watching these videos even though i understand nothing!
You are extremely likable- my respects to you young man!

Don't hire anyone to do any editing. Nobody cares. I think people enjoy the rawness of them.
The vlog works great! I sooo look forward to seeing what you're up to! THANKS!!!

Starlink currently won’t work on a boat or anything that moves, You also need to assign the location and not all southern locations are available yet
I like this format as well. I will continue to enjoy your how 2 diy videos as well.
04:00 - A tennis racquet is what you want for carpenter bees. I cut the infestation in my barn last year after only a few weeks of consistent runs with mine. A fly swatter will only knock them around. The racquet will cut them in half.

Really good format dude. Felt just as good as any other video.
Something to think about. If you get the Star link and place it on your stand you might have to gimble it, If the boat is rocking/rolling it's not going to stay locked on.
WOW, Sam is going big time, hiring a video editor. I can say I remember before Sam was famous. :)
Looks great Sam, you excel at all you do.
this type of video is how it all started for you and seems to be just fine to me. anyone who ever edited knows editing is very time consuming and a headache too.

Sam. Get braided hoses for your washing machine. They will never burst like those old rubber one you are trying to repurpose. Cheap at Lowe’s..
Hope your shop is insured. You've got a lot of money in tools sitting around there..... Consider requiring your tenant to get renter's insurance as well.
Always great videos. Sam is a real person that's sails. They are perfect
Wrong way with the thread tape Sam. Always wrap clockwise.
Two and a half wraps.
You commented that you *love* your box cutter; I can't find it anywhere even with the L-500GBP number. Help?
Starlink for boats/rv is not ready yet.
Hey Sam, have you ever thought of changing your rig to dyneema? Great vid btw
When crossing Atlantic ocean I was able to upload pictures with Iridium go. Make sure to have external antenna (not the one build in). I was using the predict wind for weather.

Leasing the workshop with or without the inventory?
Hey just so you know Starlink doesn't let you travel with it, you are assigned a "Cell" and if you leave it you dont keep getting internet.
The starlink won’t work the way you think. You have to be in a specific location, you can’t move around.
A mobile version of Starlink is under development. Musk commented on it last week in an article.
Perfect mate. Just perfect. Looking forward to the sailing.
Your paint job looks great as what is called a 10 footer. I like the cabin canopy. Keep up the good videos.
The terrestrial starlink dish has a 90W power draw so it might not be feasible for marine conditions. Maybe even the marine version has some hefty base requirements.
I've been binging (not sure if I spelled it right) your content. I really enjoy your channel. It's very positive, and keep up the great work.
3:50 u can paint some exopy on the wood and fill the holes with foam
I bought a 37-foot sailboat but it's down in Key West and I have to do a haul out new through holes Cutlass bearing
Woo boo! Your launch date is my birthday! I think we’re both kicking off to a great new chapter in our lives.
My number just came available for StarLink. It is not mobile, you have to be in proximity of a land-unit which is why the roll out is being done by geographic area.
From what I understand mobile StarLink is on the horizon but not anytime soon.
Good job! Keep up the good work! Fair wind and following seas
Honestly these are great. They in a small way remind me of Sail Life which he has a nice clean way of doing his videos.
just an FYI the starlink will not work out to sea like other satellite Internet until they re-launch all their satellites with the lasers to communicate between them they need to have a ground station quite close to where you are so it will not work once you’re 30 miles out to sea and the current dishes do not work with any motion so it will not work
great video.. keep up the great work.. looking forward to your adventures at sea.
Great video, Sam! Enjoyed it. Maybe hire a CPA and a video assembly person. Congrats on the launch date! Keep those videos coming!
The bee traps work you just need bigger holes for bottles
Got a friend with NC SMAT thats testing the Starling right now and said he’s getting 80-130 mbps! He’s now testing reliability especially under less than clear conditions
I am just happy to hear that you will be back in the water within days 👏👏👏⛵️⛵️⛵️😘
Honestly I like every video you post. If this means more videos I think it’s a win for all.
When u lease your shop does that include your tools?? I hope not...
Congrats on leasing the place. It will save you from worrying about it while your gone
SAM! get a large paper grocery bag.crinkle it up, fill it with plastic bags to fill it out. spray paint it grey. hang it up where the bees are. they will all begone in 12 hours. bees will think its a hornets nest. all bees are terrified of hornets..it works. I've done it!
I’ve heard the gray Walmart bags work too. No need to paint.
Are you sure it works with carpenter bees ?(I think that's what Sam said) I have a lot where I live. BTW, a tennis or racquetball racket is what you need to get the buggers. They hover in your face, and whack! Split 'em in 2. Carpenter bees are strong too.
As soon as he said it I popped up the comments to suggest exactly that. I use paper lunch bags and the bees LEAVE!
put a big black dot on the bag. They will think its a nest and leave. Trust me
@Peter Rahill i got that from a landscaper. It works.
A daily vlog like this is great.
Sam,
I think daily videos is a great idea.
I also agree your Life do whats best for Sam.............
I work at a remote site. My guys and I use the InReachs as well. They've saved our bacon a couple of times.
Nice video Sam. Do what you gotta do, I like the vlog format.
Really looking forward to seeing the boat back in the water again. ;)
