I agree I traded in an Alfa Romeo Guilia Ti for VB BRZ. I like to drive hard with foot to the floor. The Guilia got me in trouble. Also nothing is more fun than sub 3k lbs car.
I have a ‘24 RF GT, mostly agree with you. There is nothing else at this price point that puts smiles on like a MX 5. It’s a drivers car; quick, great handling, fun the drive. Plus great on gas, cheap to insure, and no fussy maintenance. All the stuff people complain it doesn’t have would add weight and price. You want a car with every modern gadget and nanny systems to put you in a soulless cocoon? Buy a new Corvette for 3x the price.

Bought one of the first NA Miatas in 1989 and bought an ND2 RF in 2023. The ND2 reminds me of the NA, which reminded me of my old Triumph Spitfire. As it's a third car, I bought it used with 15k miles and saved $7k over new. I run the snot out of it in the mountains and still get 38 mpg. Fantastic car.
I have had My 2023 MX-5 RF MAN TRANS since Jan "23. ABSOLUTELY LOVE this car.Could care less about the infotainment system, except for the Bose system.I am not an audiophile but sound is just fine 4 me. I have added Michelin PS5 tires,Goodwin Racing excel back exhaust(12 lbs less weight +8 hp gain 2 rear wheels) polymer door bushings and a sound tube delete. As is this car is almost perfect.these additions help alot though. Oh and did I say I LOVE MY CAR, well it's worth saying again. ZOOM ZOOM!
I have 40K miles on my 22 soul red GT soft top. This car makes me feel like I’m a kid again when I give it the giddy up. So quick through any corner and fun to get it into a little slide and a quick recovery and when I do it with a friend in the car they gasp and then laugh uncontrollably and sometimes they say “do it again”
I've got a 2018 with about 20K on it. I've had zero problems. It's my winter car as well. It's a hand full in the snow to say the least. I'm keeping it until the wheels fall off. It' s one of the few cars I haven't gotten sick of yet.
This vifeo came in perfect timing. I'm about to place an order this weekend. As an owner of 2 previous MCs, So glad they still use real gauges and everything that still makes it an MX-5 unique and great :) the engineering they did under the car, from the chassis, suspension, to the engine and transmission, it will be a future classic and a car people will come back to once everything goes electric.
I’ve had a 1999 NB series since new. It’s the most fun you can have at legal speeds. As much as I like the newer Miata’s, both sentimental reasons, and from a purely drivers view point, the newer ones are much different from ours. Plus, it’s Dark Green with Tan leather…I’m not crazy about the newer interior color choices of white or black. Thanks for a great review on a great sports car!
Interesting they didn't go for a screen on the center gauges, pretty nice. Also love that it has a handbrake. Current electronic handbrakes on sporty cars are weird.
Great review video and it’s such a pleasure to watch it. And I love my 24 RF Club. The Recaro seats are a chef’s kiss on top of all the great things about a MX-5.
I love my 1990 Miata. Most fun car I have ever had. Drove to Mexico in it, great on the highway Have a little over 200,000 K on the odometer. Love it!!
I actually like Mazda's rotary dial. I have a 2022 CX-5 and it doesn't even have a touchscreen. I realize that may be an issue for some, but I appreciate the simplicity. I'd rather focus on the road over the potential distraction of tapping around on a screen.
We have a 2021 CX-5 and 2024 CX-90. We love the Mazda approach to navigating the infotainment screen. No reaching. No fingerprints. Quick access with commonly used screens with the surrounding buttons. And with connected services we enter our navigation address in the phone app and send it to the car before we leave the house. Works flawlessly. Build quality is amazing. Both made in Japan. They both look and feel like more expensive vehicles. MX-5 is next on our shopping list. We’re also looking forward to the new RX-7
Wonderful review!!! You covered every aspect of this vehicle perfectly. I love your rating system and expertise. A joy to watch and learn! Thank you so much, def hit the like and subscribed!
I have one just like that but in the Mazda red color with fawn interior. I bought it in June 2024. I love it. For practicality, I also bought a red 2024Alfa Romeo Stelvio Tributo Italiano at the same time. I love the Alfa, too.
I have a 2021 RF Club with BBS Package...I agree with all of your assessments. I plan to give my little sprots car a power boost by adding a complete new exhaust from the header to the muffler, which should make a pretty decent difference in performance when coupled with a tune.
The non-touch panel thing is for safety. The big advantage with physical buttons is that once they are familiar you can operate without looking or at the most just a quick glance, with a touch screen you just can't do that (if you think you do, then I challenge you to try operating one with your eyes closed).
Well done review. I bought a new 2024 Club soft top coming from a 2016 Club soft top. The infotainment non touch mode does not bother me at all. In fact EVEN if it were a touch screen the oils from your fingers mar the screen making it hard to see in daylight. Adding Alexa / Google maps to this system takes the MX-5 to equal the other Mazda vehicles in the lineup. The continual improvement Mazda engineers put into this car has been subtle since 2016 but the list would be very long. The engine being improved to rev higher adding more HP is good but not so significant that the 2016 Club model couldn't keep up with this 2024 Club version. What I also noticed is Mazda engineers put more comfort into the 2024 ( padded center console / padded sun visors ).
Bought a new 2024 MX5 RF in April. The build quality overall is very good, but I have had a few issues in particular: 1) The side window seals and the side windows do not seal evenly on both sides. The closed driver's side window sounds like it is cracked open at highway speeds (significant wind noise). Im not the only one to have this issue, and its well documented online that other RF owners have had this issue have also had it ignored by dealers and corporate Mazda. 2) Some of the leather on passenger seat appears it was stretched unevenly, resulting in odd wrinkles in a few spots.
The fact that you can turn it out of touch screen is excellent. Have you every driven over rough roads (like all our roads in New Zealand) & tried to use a touch screen? I have a NC & I threw the touch screen radio out because it was impossible to use most of the time & fitted one with some dials.
I LOVE that the video starts with measuring panel gaps. As an aside, try a Suzuki Swift Sport if you love a good handling light car that is also impressively practical
Arg I want one of these so bad, used to drive a gti, then 370z but felt too powerful too big, handling yikes... I missed those simple small light drive feel. Hope I'll get one next year 😊🙏
I’ve always loved the Miata but could never justify one due to family. Instead I just open all 5 windows and the sunroof on my 4Runner to simulate safari mode.
Get one when you become an empty nester like we did. Just don’t tell your kids how much fun you’re having sliding around a corner at 40 mph instead of the suggested 20. It’s true that it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
Hey David, would love to know what spec you would personally pick (for a second vehicle) and why. Soft top vs. RF model, GS-P vs. GT trim, with or without sport package. Appreciate the thoroughness in your reviews!
Between this and the GR86 what would be a better option as a daily driver for one person? I was going back and forth between the two with the mx5 slowly becoming the better option from what I’ve seen and read as I also want a car that will last long but something to have fun in, the boxer engine in the gr does come with a few flaws but for the most part is good but the miata also comes with the bonus of being lightweight and therefore more fuel efficient, the boot is obviously better on the GR86 however for one person I won’t be carrying more than will probably fit in the mx5, this though also comes at the cost that the GR86 will be around 6-8k more expensive than the mx5 which is a huge factor and the possible decider, I plan on test driving both cars before making a decision but if anyone has any insight on both or even one or the other any pointers would be appreciated.
I love my NC3 but the Hokone may be als0 a fun dance partner. (I love the bucket of aqua color) Overall Mx5 should be in the Hall of Fame, if there was one for fun cars!
Great and honest review. If you are considering getting a new MX5, do it. Don't let all the nah sayers here discourage you. Miatas are a true car guys and gals driving enthusiasts car. Not the fastest but not ever meant to be. Not everything needs to go from 0-60 in a lightening bolt to be fun. I'm going to put one in the stable before they ruin the design with EV or Hybrid.
There are no "naysayers" here. Everyone in the comments is taking about how they own one and like it. Stop shadowboxing ghosts so you can pretend to be a contrarian.
Everything is relative if you ask me, the cupholders are brilliant design. Nothing in the way of the instrumentation of shifting gears in such a small car. It’s a absolutely brilliant design how much time you want to drive and drink anyway put the coffee down until you get where you’re going, the interface is just fine with me. I love the rotary dial. It keeps my eye on the road and I actually give me the option of using it when I’m stationary. That’s not bad at all. How do I know this? I just got one. I have no issues here.
As a a matter of fact, after getting my new car, I realize that you could actually turn it off in the menu to be touchscreen at all times… for some reason why I don’t mazda don’t tell you this, but it’s there!
If there was room for an aftermarket subwoofer I’d be in an ND MX5. I did get a VB BRZ because nothing comes to sub 3k lbs. Porsche has even bloated up to 3200 pounds. Power is perfect in either MX5 or Twins. You can put foot to the floor without risking injury or tickets. I’ll admit the MX5 has better suspension setup and is drop dead gorgeous.
I might have a "Toyobaru" if I wasn't a convertible fan. I think the new ones look better than the MX5, but it could be that I'm more familiar with the Miata and the twins have a novel look to me.
A friend surprised me and got one a few months ago in red. We always talked about him getting one and he pulled the trigger. Very nice, but his only complaint is the interior noise.
I have a 2023 RF club and one of the first things I did was apply sound deadening butyl sheets and closed cell foam to the roof, doors, trunk, fenders and hood. It made a significant difference to me.
@@cstrx11 you need to apply both the butyl and closed cell foam. The butyl dampens the buzzy, ringing frequencies which makes the car feel more solid. Then closed cell foam is the layer that absorbs sound coming into the car from the outside. As far as which panels give the most bang for buck? IMO, sound deadening the doors, hood, and front fenders reduced the most noise. Sound deadening the trunk surfaces, roof, and rear wheel wells didn’t seem to do as much.
We dont want big expensive sportscars - yes. We dont want the big expensive MR2 as a Porsche competitor, thank you.... The Miata is the role model - hopefully - for the new Mister....
The paint is beautiful, but very thin. My 2020 Club has many rock chips after 60K miles. I would def recommend PPF or a bra. My display has delaminated in the corners, but I have a replacement. These are my only complaints. Considering the size, MPG, handling dynamics, lightness and chuckability, I wouldn't want anything else for my fun car. This is my fifth MX5 and they've all been a joy.
Sadly, yes. The only good think is that the trans problem (on non tuned cars) occure mostly during warranty period during the first 10-30 k km. THe safest years at the moment are 2017-2020 (and first half of 21), but the earlier models got new trans now. The current syncro issues of the MY 21-23 are bad, most bad trans already broke and have been replaced. Hopefully the ND3 doesnt have these issues.
On 6th Mx5 in 32 years never suffered a breakdown or fault. Latest has better ride and tied down rear axle .Great how the have improved efficiency 45mpg uk
I have a 2009 MX5-GT with retractable hardtop. I have winter snows on rims. In 2010 I took it from Peterborough Ontario to Victoria BC and then down to Maricopa AZ and back to Peterborough in April 2011. The drive from Peterborough to Victoria took me through northern US States and the first major snowstorm of the Winter. There were cars in the ditch everywhere but the Miata with snows was rock solid on the freeway. I was towing a black motorcycle trailer at the time for extra storage and was getting High Fives from every car I passed. Don’t worry, the Miata with good snow tires doesn’t get any better. I still have the Miata and trailer. You won’t regret buying a manual!
You have the cloth, leather or Recaro choices. I can only speak for the recaros, and they are the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in. They also hold you in well during high G maneuvers. I did have to alter the bolsters on the seat bottom by pushing them out (metal underneath) with brute strength for a more perfect fit around my fat a...
Hopefully Mazda will offer both an ICE and EV version of the Miata….I can’t imagine a Miata without a manual, especially considering it’s one of the best 6spd in the biz.
Cup holders is not part of the driving aesthetics and driving experience..we need to be paying more attention or driving anyway while driving! that is the premise behind control interface also.
Love the RF 6-MT MX-5 but the lack of appealing (IMO) color options is a bucket of ice water thrown on my desire to get one. Would jump at the chance to buy a new RF 6-MT in the signature Mazda Polymetal Gray Metallic "Carbon Edition" color (blue-gray color). Besides some 360-degree (all glass/windows) premium heat-reflective glass film like Spectra PhotoSync IRD, all this vehicle needs after purchase are some proper rolled-edge stainless-steel exhaust tips to complete the picture.
you say paint quality is high. and they definitely look good, but ND owners have widely reported that the paint chips badly up front, especially the soul red color. I know miatas are known for having thin paint, but My NC miata is 10 years old and the paint looks significantly better up front where it is going to take rocks and road debris than many of the ND's on the road.
I love my 2021 RF. Like you said the fact that we have to play with the rotating knob instead of just touching the screen is my biggest gripe about that car. I also love all the aftermarket mods available for it.
I dont know why noone talks about what happens underneath the mx5s? Here in the UK, these cars rust heavily underneath, more so than many of their competitors. It really is an issue, with people finding even 6 or 7 year old cars rusting. It seems mazda have really dropped the ball as far as the undeneath of their mx5s
Miata is synonymous with KISS. We don't need a huge infotainment system. We have a cellphone aleready. Give me bluetooth, and my playlist and I'm good. No more complicated crap in cars. That's why I plan on getting a new Miata next year....well all that and the MR2 is going to be 70k.
'Great car except for the graphical touchscreen controls. Physical knobs and switches are far superior to any touchscreen on any car. Physical controls are far more ergonomic and faster since eyes spend little or zero time away from road where they belong at all times, adjusting done by touch, muscle memory for location of the knob or switch. There is zero tactile feedback from a touchscreen which requires a direct visual sight line to locate the control and to monitor finger movement and any visual response on the screen-- that is eyes off the road where they really ought to be. To compare the new MX-5's touchscreen to any other car's misses the point entirely. There should be no screen at all! This is a driver's car! Would you expect one on the McLaren F1?
The only thing that I do not like is that these touch screen apps look so cartoonish! Not classy at all! Is there a way to darken the screen so that it isnt glaring while driving?
I question the paint quality. I was warned the red very fragile but when ahead only to discover that yes in fact the red is not for someone wanting a good solid paint. The red is certainly beautiful and pops under full sun but shame it’s definitely fragile like glass. Wished I went with white as I’m sure it would have been much more resilient to chips but love the car and aside from paint only wished they came with decent sway bars. The stock sway bars are a joke and should be stiffened in the top end model
@@richardmichael59haven’t had to consider it in any other vehicle fortunately. These days with all the modern tech one would hope for more resilience with what we pay and not to have to worry about such things. Appreciate the mention tho. My 4x4 has had less paint damage over 8 yrs than this has had in 8 months!
"Paint quality is fantastic" literally every Miata owner 🤔🤔 you look at this car wrong and the paint chips lol Ask ND owners if they have PPF and i bet its over 50% do.
i disagree with you nvh is not great even with hardtop and in the 'grand touring' trim, also gr86 is significantly better value however a special car it is in the modern world, we're lucky to have something still this honest to exist today
Yeah. NVH is still pretty high in the RF. I had to apply sound deadening butyl sheets plus closed cell foam sheets to the doors, roof, hood, insides of the fenders, and trunk. Made a big difference.
What happened to the comparison between the Miata and the BMW Z4?That’s what the title said all you did. Was talk about the Miata where is the comparison?😢
Have you actually seen all of my videos? I talked extensively about the Tundra engine recall, and I've given A to Mazda CX-70/90 and more recently to Infiniti QX.
I had a 2019 RF MX5. It was a fun little car. But it is a weak car. Ride comfort is poor. NVH is horrible. Early versions of MX5 don't even have air filters which means you'd smell the gas from the car before you. Refinement is pretty much non-exist and long distance travel is very painful. Weak engine means that you don't get sports car performance on the street. If you want to overtake some SUV over a twisty mountain road with very limited overtaking distance, well good luck. And forget about the engine note. A 600CC motorcycle sounds better. It's exceptionally small size and low roof mean it's harder to spot especially by tall, oversized SUVs. There have been multiple occasions when these big cars don't see me and merged into my lane too close. Again, it is fun, but if you think it is better than other more expensive 2 seat roadsters such as Z4, Supra MK5, Porsche 718 in the fun factor or any other factor, you are just deceiving yourself. MX5 is inferior in every aspect comparing to these, which is alright, because it's almost half the price of a Supra, 1/3 price of a Z4 and 1/4 price of a 718.
YOUR OPINION MATTERS TO ME ! I’ve been watching you for years , you’re very honest and a honorable man .
What a review! Thank you so much, I own a 2020 RF GT For over 10 months now and I absolutely love it,

Well put. I really enjoy mine and actually I am happy it’s not 100 percent perfect, if you know what I mean.
I also picked up a new 24 GT RF, what an amazing machine, pure engaging well built mechanical pure sports car.
A very honest review, thank you.
But a little harsh on the ‘ride’. I think it’s a perfect mix of comfort for track type suspension.

If the screen was fully touch enabled you could remove the rotary control and perhaps get a cup holder for the driver in a sensible location.
@@fmtien What do you think, which made do most difference?
@@cstrx11 you need to apply both the butyl and closed cell foam. The butyl dampens the buzzy, ringing frequencies which makes the car feel more solid. Then closed cell foam is the layer that absorbs sound coming into the car from the outside. As far as which panels give the most bang for buck? IMO, sound deadening the doors, hood, and front fenders reduced the most noise. Sound deadening the trunk surfaces, roof, and rear wheel wells didn’t seem to do as much.
@@fmtien understood, thx
Bikes require helmets, convertibles require ear plugs.
ND generation miata is awesome besides the transmission issue that seems to plague this platform even after ND2 revision.
Great Video, thanks!
I believe they don't have a touch panel because they want the driver to focus on the road. Using a touchpad while driving is a huge distraction
I have fiat 124 spider. It is fantastic car , beautiful handling but I wish screen would retract , only up when satnav being used .
Isn’t the RF too noisy top down compared to ST?
Got NC & ND we road & track… super awesome!!! 👍😊👊💥
I didn't know Jackie Chan does car reviews!!!!!
On 6th Mx5 in 32 years never suffered a breakdown or fault.
Latest has better ride and tied down rear axle .Great how the have improved efficiency 45mpg uk
How will it react to living thru a winter of snow and slush
Great review and well balanced! Just like the Miata 😂
Are the seats comfortable?
Yes
You have the cloth, leather or Recaro choices. I can only speak for the recaros, and they are the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in. They also hold you in well during high G maneuvers. I did have to alter the bolsters on the seat bottom by pushing them out (metal underneath) with brute strength for a more perfect fit around my fat a...
I considered buying one but chose a AP2 S2000 instead.
Hopefully Mazda will offer both an ICE and EV version of the Miata….I can’t imagine a Miata without a manual, especially considering it’s one of the best 6spd in the biz.
I wished Mazda offered a Coupe version. The Hardtop, even the ragtop, takes up space that could have been open for cargo/ dogs. .
Buy a volvo
Cup holders is not part of the driving aesthetics and driving experience..we need to be paying more attention or driving anyway while driving! that is the premise behind control interface also.
does a trunk exist in this small car ?
Yup, I have a SRC Club and my front end after 60K miles is freckled with paint chips. I still wouldn't have anything else for my fun car.
I love my 2021 RF. Like you said the fact that we have to play with the rotating knob instead of just touching the screen is my biggest gripe about that car.
I also love all the aftermarket mods available for it.
Like with any model * by time they make everything to perfection * THEY CHANGE 😓. .. Example Toyota loves to keep same engines for years ❤.
MX5 prices are getting too high. I know because I bought 2 of them in recent years. They need to keep it near 30k.
It’s not just MX5 pricing it ALL vehicles.
It's merely a targa top. Go for the soft top - that is a true open car.
I wish it was a bit bigger inside as the interior can feel a bit cramped and just don’t fit in it😅
I have never watched anyone call it Retractible Fastback consistently
❤❤🙏🙏 very good
The only thing that I do not like is that these touch screen apps look so cartoonish! Not classy at all! Is there a way to darken the screen so that it isnt glaring while driving?
Ride and nvh will be hard to tune in light weight cars. Unsprung mass ratio will be high.
How expensive?
$40k
I question the paint quality. I was warned the red very fragile but when ahead only to discover that yes in fact the red is not for someone wanting a good solid paint. The red is certainly beautiful and pops under full sun but shame it’s definitely fragile like glass. Wished I went with white as I’m sure it would have been much more resilient to chips but love the car and aside from paint only wished they came with decent sway bars. The stock sway bars are a joke and should be stiffened in the top end model
PPF solves that…..in any vehicle.
Miata is a solid choice for convertible…. But I’ll stick to my 2005 Honda S2000.
Good video!
Closed top.
I've got one ZOOM-ZOOM!
Most cars on the road are larger and larger SUV. Imagine driving a roadster on the wrong side of a Cybertruck.
"Paint quality is fantastic" literally every Miata owner 🤔🤔 you look at this car wrong and the paint chips lol Ask ND owners if they have PPF and i bet its over 50% do.
i disagree with you nvh is not great even with hardtop and in the 'grand touring' trim, also gr86 is significantly better value
however a special car it is in the modern world, we're lucky to have something still this honest to exist today
Yeah. NVH is still pretty high in the RF. I had to apply sound deadening butyl sheets plus closed cell foam sheets to the doors, roof, hood, insides of the fenders, and trunk. Made a big difference.
RF is nothing new - there was PRHT on NC which operates on the same principle.
Not quite the same.
RF ends up being a targa, PRHT is a full convertible.
You didn't just compare a Miata to a Murano convertible
That would be a great comparison ha ha
Origami in motion .
What happened to the comparison between the Miata and the BMW Z4?That’s what the title said all you did. Was talk about the Miata where is the comparison?😢
Hmm?? Where do I say it's a comparison with Z4??
I am 6’1”. The windshield is blow my eye bow line . The car is too small for NA market. May be it’s good for Asian market.
I am 6 1, 210lb and I fit fine on my club softtop.
See Jubbal and cars review. He is also 6’ 1
Because you didn't fit, it's not good for the entire market? Get over yourself.
I manage my nc at 6,3. I also manage a Caterham 7 and am about 210 lbs
@@benmarr352 ND NC NB NA model ?
@@junzhang2087 Next time you grow to 6'1", grow longer legs and not a freakishly large torso and head.
I wish they had made the Miata look little gown up instead of Japanese comic character. My daily is Mercedes SL.
This is why we have choices in life.
Your SL is not very comparable considering the cost.
😂 despite the praise it averaged a B for him. Has he given an A for any car?
'A' is reserved for Toyota only. Even if V6 turbos are blowing up by the dozens. He will not even mention it.
Have you actually seen all of my videos? I talked extensively about the Tundra engine recall, and I've given A to Mazda CX-70/90 and more recently to Infiniti QX.
Why review a convertible on a rainy day?😂
Because it rains a lot here in Vancouver...
Best way to test for leaks.🤷🏼♂️
The paint quality is far away from being good....its thin and especially the roof has orange structure....
I believe they are eliminating the 6 speed gearbox on the RF.
When they move to electric?
Sports car?
Mazda Mia?
Mia?
The Miata still looks ugly
It bothers me how he pronounces mazda
I am from Japan and live in Canada. The way I pronounce Mazda is the correct way here in Canada. In the US, it's pronounced differently.
In Australia we also pronounce it the correct Japanese way, same as Canada. Not the unusual Marrz-da pronunciation of the USA
@@davidgeorge3705 I think the correct way in Japanese is the US version?!
I’m in the U.S., where most of us say “Mahzda.” I like the Canadian pronunciation better, though. It sounds fun, just like the cars 🙂
