    My hair got really matted after my labor then c section. I wasn’t able to wash or brush my hair for like three days. Once I was able to move, my night nurses did the kindest, most selfless thing for me: they combed my hair. They both sat there with water and combs and worked on my hair for an hour until it was mostly combed through. I was so touched and grateful ❤

    There is nothing better then amazing hair stylists who take the time to untangle and demat hair instead of making them cut or shave it. There's so much time and energy spent on growing out hair. And as someone who not only struggles with but have seen depression take its toll on people to the point they stop caring about things like their hair, it's hard for them to ask for help and to not just give up. So when they do ask for help it's so amazing to receive genuine care and understanding

      When you're in the ocean the water is constantly moved in different directions. When you have the goggle strap around the back of your head the hair catches a bit in the strap and as the water swirls and moves in different directions so does your hair plus the salt is very drying (makes it so much harder to untangle). It would be like teasing your hair in different direction under water. You can tell where the goggle strap was under the mat. Plus the goggles slide around a bit which pulls the hair in all different directions. Watch a snorkeling video with a woman with long hair that's not put up or braided. You will see how the ocean causes almost a washing machine movement with their hair.

    • @bishielurfer
      @bishielurfer ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can absolutely find other stories of people getting really awful mats from snorkeling. It probably got worse as I doubt she came straight from snorkeling. It would surprise me if she tried to fix it, realized how bad it was, and decided to not touch it and let the professionals handle it. So she's likely slept on it as well.
      But if your hair is not properly protected and tied up, it's pretty easy for it to get really tangled. The waves are constantly moving it in all different directions, the hair gets wrapped around and tangled in the mask, the ocean salt water dries out of your hair (not to mention whatever other gunk you encounter getting mixed in there)... It's just a mess.
      Not everyone will have this issue, as different hair textures are going to get tangled more or less easily, and hair that has already been chemically treated (such as by bleaching it) has the potential to end up even worse. But it's always a good idea to put your hair in a braid or other protective hair style and put on some kind of protector before going in the water (and that's true with any water. Natural water sources are all going to have various things in them and chlorine in pools can damage your hair).

    • @SirSealandLister
      @SirSealandLister ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s science!!! Curly hair tangles less than straight because in it’s natural state it touches itself less. You can see it when you draw two opposite wavy lines (because hair curls in both directions) and two straight lines

    • @tk7105
      @tk7105 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My mum and I thought I had straight just frizzy and unruly hair for most of my childhood. Turns out it’s just extremely wavy. If I treat it like straight hair and just blow it out, not matter what I do, it will tangle within by just existing. I had a professional blowout for a wedding the other das and my hair just kept working against ist. It already tangled while the stylist was still working on it. If I treat it like it likes to be treated, and feed it the products it likes (and it eats them up) I can keep that for almost a week if it doesn’t get dirty otherwise, without it tangling much. If I don’t do anything and just brush it out it tangles, frizzes and poofs. I’m just mentioning it because even my curls haired family members didn’t notice that might be what was causing the issue

    Hairstylists listening to their clients and actually taking the time to detangle instead of snipping away is so important for their identity and self esteem! During the pandemic I got so depressed my hair got all matted and when I went to the salon they didn't even try to detangle, just started cutting it. I hated how short and uneven they left it and cried because I went there to try to avoid getting it all cut off in the first place, I specifically asked them to detangle and only cut what couldn't be saved but they didn't even tried to save it in the first place! They said they could "fix it" with a hairstyle it but I paid and left because I didn't want them to keep messing it up. Seeing that other hairstylists actually try to keep the length of the hair makes me happy but also angry because that was what I needed and ended up getting a horrible haircut that made me even more insecure because the people that I went to didn't even care to try to help me and just took the easy efortless way out of doing their job.

      I’m so sorry that happened to you. I’ve had this happen a few times in my life due to depressive episodes too, and I’ve always been to afraid to even walk into a salon- so kudos to you for seeking help, even if it ended up not being a great experience- I still think it’s great that you sought support.
      I just got done getting one of these bad boys out of my hair a few weeks ago- it had been matted in one area for a long time, and it was easier to ignore it than face the shame and the seemingly impossible task of detangling it. There’s so much shame and guilt associated with stuff like this- I just always felt lazy or gross or like a failure- like who can’t even manage to brush their hair? But I learned more recently about its association with depression- and that it’s okay. It doesn’t mean I’m a failure or a bad person; it doesn’t mean I’m lazy or gross. It just means that I did the best I could with what I had at the time- and I made it through. 💪
      I did end up cutting some of my own hair too bc I was just getting fed UP and wanted it out and done with. I had to keep reminding myself that the hair will grow back, and it will be okay. ✂️ When I finally realized I could brush ALL the way through my hair, I straight up cried. It was like all these emotions and pain were finally released… like a weight was lifted. I didn’t realize how much of an impact it had on my psyche. I don’t even mind my new choppy haircut. Im just relieved. 😮‍💨 And proud! Because I didn’t give up. I CAN do hard things. That’s a great thing to learn about yourself. We were both able to get through it, and that’s what matters most. ❤
      I hope you’re feeling better now; it’s not an easy experience to go through. I always felt so alone and embarrassed and overwhelmed… But videos like these help a lot. Awareness is essential to growth! And kindness, patience, compassion… these things go a long way in situations like these.
      ❤ take good care ❤

    I have dematted my 3.5 ft long 1a hair after a month of not combing it for mental health reasons, several times. The key is lots of leave-in conditioner, patience (it may take hours), and using your fingers to gently pull the sides of each mat/knot to loosen it instead of combing downwards through the knot, which will tear out your hair.

Amongst other disabilities/ medical conditions, I have a movement disorder - basically, I twitch and shake 24/7 - and the combination of that and the night sweats from being a peri- menopausal woman, leaves my A2 locks matted up on the daily unless I'm super-strict about protecting every single strand - give it a few hours though, even during the day, and the resulting tangles can be enough to leave me (figuratively) tearing my hair out!
    In fact, just a few days of high heat with my hair down and no detangling last year, left me a scissor's breadth from chopping the whole lot off - we're talking, a good friend having to literally rip the scissors from my hands because of how much she (rightly) knew I'd regret it! Sure, it would probably make my life easier, but the fact I'm disabled doesn't stop me from wanting to look good with a style that suits me, the same as anybody else - which from sad experience is absolutely, 100%, and definitively *not* the pixie cut, lol! I do *try* to minimise the bleach, but I can't resist a slight lift to add purple tones, as well as covering my greys... but hey, that's vanity for you! And still, my hair doesn't look even HALF as gorgeous as this lady's does by the end here - what a truly fabulous result! As for the price though... OMG, I honestly dread to think!!😳

    I went to Cosmo school in Hawaii and we had a customer who came in with the same issue. It took 2-4 students and rotating them out with a ton of product and a couple of hours to undo her hair just to braid it and see her again in a couple of days.

    this same thing happened to my niece after spending about 5 hours in a pool with her hair down. we tried to brush it out with conditioner, apple cider vinegar, hair masks, detangler... after about two hours, she freaked out and had an emotional breakdown and wouldn't let us help anymore. we decided to sleep on it, hoping hours going by with stuff in her hair would soften it up. nope. in the morning, she refused anything except to cut it off. so, she got a cute bob 🤷🏽‍♀️

    I HAVE A TIP!! this happened to me when first started scuba diving even through I braided it. I was distressed as I meticulously combed through my hair for almost three hours with deep conditioner when I got home. USE COCONUT OIL! and i mean a lot of coconut oil. I coat my whole head until it’s soaking down my back. The oil crates a barrier between your hair and the salty water. Then put your hair in a ponytail and tightly braid the pony tail. Now wrap the braid in a bun and secure with a silk scrunchie. If you feel confident, stop there. But not me, i then cover the bun with a spandex like material(kinda like bathing suit material, you can cut up an old suit) and secure with another scrunchie to cover the bun completely. The less the hair can move the better. I look kinda crazy but I don’t dive to look pretty. It’s saved my hair from lots of trauma!! You can also use a cap but those just my head like no other. I hope this can help someone!

    I used conditioner, oils anything I could, it was literally beyond help. I dried it, went to bed, called my hair stylist, told her, she said I have 20 minutes come now.
    Long story short she had to cut the back into layers.

    Wow! I’ve never had matting from snorkeling, but a few years ago my hair matted after a major surgery. It took ten hours and I was in the hospital for two weeks. The entire time I didn’t cry once. But after the two weeks when I finally made it home, my mom went to brush my hair before I showered (I still had tubes coming out of my stomach and my parents are literal angels on earth), and discovered the back was matted. She combed and combed and was so patient! Finally, she couldn’t get the last little bit, and I was so emotionally spent at that point I told her to just cut it out. And I cried and cried! Surgery.. cool! Pain… whatever! Tubes everywhere… I’m good! Giant mat that gave me a tiny little bald spot that I knew would eventually grow out and I LOST it! Lol. It’s funny looking back on it, but it’s amazing how important hair can feel to a woman! Total straw that broke the camels back kind of moment.

    My experience with getting tangles out of the manes and tails of horses as a last resort is to use one blade of your scissors or a straight edge (even a pocket knife) is to insert into the bottom of the knot and pull through work out more tangles then continue working your way up so there aren’t any choppy looking cuts and it appears as a natural.

    Stylists that take the time and effort to untangle matted hair are a rare breed. I’ve got a few mental illnesses, mainly bipolar disorder and agoraphobia, that can make taking care of myself difficult. I’ve had matting happen many times and unfortunately, within the past 10 years, I’ve had to completely cut off my mid back length hair 3 times. It’s one of those things that honestly creeps up on me. I’ll have my hair in a ponytail, it’ll get tangly, and I’ll just wash it without brushing it first. Then when it’s dry, I often don’t have the mental energy to detangle it so it goes back into a ponytail. Suddenly, a day or two later, it’s matted. If I have the energy, I’ll sit down and work at the knots but often it just gets the outermost hair smoothed out and goes right back up in a ponytail. Eventually I just get frustrated and ashamed that I let it get so bad and I start hacking off the mats, usually resulting in a total disaster of a haircut. Fortunately I have a loving partner who is surprisingly good at tidying up and styling my hack job so I occasionally let him fix me up and help me feel beautiful again.
    My agoraphobia makes going to salons a difficult task but if there was a salon or stylist like this near me, I’d probably have far less impromptu hack jobs of my hair. Trusting a stranger to help you in such a vulnerable situation is so hard and I’m so glad that there are more and more stylists out there willing to be understanding and caring and nonjudgmental when it comes to fixing matted hair. ♥️
