I am replacing cylinder head gasket on my 2003 Honda civic ex, a 1.7 vtec sohc 16 valve engine and have watched numerous videos. I am most grateful for urs, cuz u go step by step, not over simplified but correct instruction, with great visual, which is way a plus! Thanks so much!
Is there any reason I cannot break the crank bolt loose first, before disassembling everything? It seems like I could break it loose then tighten it up again to turn the motor. Obviously, if I can't get the crank bolt loose it's a deal breaker on the timing belt replacement. Thank you for the great video.
Hello! Great tutorial! I was following it step by step but I had a problem. I broke two extensions when trying to take the crank bolt off. Just for you information, the car has the original belt. So that bolt was never been removed in 11 years. So, my question it would be: Were the socket and extension 3/4 or 1/2? If they were 1/2 I need to buy better ones.. haha. Thanks in advance. Regards.
What was the length of the breaker bar socket extension at 1:09, going into the wheel well? Thanks for the video, and not using an Impact wrench to remove the pulley.
Dear sir Greetings from Finland. I just bought a Honda stream 1.7 which apparently have a similar engine as yours. (not too sure though). I have noticed oil leak coming out under the black plastic covering the timing belt pulley down on the block. My question is, as you open up all the gargets in this timing belt area, (as l see you did in the video) is there an oil seal somewhere inside or near the water pump? Or where could the oil be possibly coming out from? Please kindly help as this is driving me crazy. I could send you pictures if possible. (your email add will be appreciated). Lots of oils pours out when engine is warm. Please help me. Thanks
Why did you skip the remainder of installing the tensioner? At the end of part 3 you're beginning to install the tensioner, and at the beginning of part 4 it's already installed. How do you make sure it is oriented in the correct position?
Great video! The only thing as mention below by pinetarsoap the tensioner spring is incorrect. My kit came with a paper showing the open spring towards the block
I am not sure why you back set the cam timing when removing the HB bolt. The belt would still be in "time" with the cam and the crank gear that holds the belt.
What cleaner did you use to spray after you took off the old water pump? Did you use "CRC 20 oz 05084 BRAKLEEN Brake Parts Cleaner-Non-Chlorinated" to spray?
oops, the head of the bolt broke while screwing one of the long bolts of the water pump. I have the abs breaks so it's a tight spot. it's the lower left hole that has a piece of the bolt inside. any ideas how to get that off? thx.
My 01 with 170k died while I was driving and as I was waiting on roadside I looked up a few things and read about the crank sensor and how itll run if you unplug it. At 1st I wass unplugging the cam shaft sensor and it would start but run really bad with bad throttle response and then I found the crank sensor on bottom and it started and almost ran perfect besides a slightly rough idol and I read it either had bad sensor or slightly jumped time. When I started it I didnt hear any engine noise or clacking so I knew more than likely it didnt jump time and or was hitting the valves but 2 month prior i left the oil cap loose and it came off and about a half qt or so of oil blew out over a month and the timing cover and around the oil cap was covered. I got a new cap but hadnt pressure washed the engine off yet and I'm wondering if a little bit of oil got on the timing belt and did make it jump 1 tooth.
I just ordered a new crank shaft sensor and may just order everything that I can replace under there besides the water pump since it's fine and cha ge the belt and sensors while I have it off.
I disconnected my ckp sensor from the harness then found top dead center....moved the crank around. then realized I'm wasnt supposed to disconnect it, only remove the bolt and push it out of the way. could this affect anything?
I have the top wheel at Top Dead Center, but I cant see the marking on the harmonic balancer, if the top wheel is at TDC, then the harmonic balancer should be on the mark automatically, right? Great work btw! I have a Honda EX so the damn ABS is in the way making this job a bit harder.
I was eventually able to see the harmonic balancer lined up, but only briefly. I jsut lined up TDC from the top of the engine and everything worked out fine. Also that ABS was an extra pain in the ass but I worked aorund it without completely removing it, just loosened it. Good luck!
+Gilbert Baldwin You can remove the valve cover, then with the car jacked up, go to the driver's side front wheel, and you'll see a whole, you can turn counter-clockwise.
Hi mate, there seems to be a lot of work involved changing belt kit and pump on this engine compared to my 1.9tid for example. Would this make for an expensive garage bill? Great videos as usual Thanks
i can't get my car to stay started. i followed the requirements for tdc but car will not run. what can be the problem? thank you for your video and for your time.
yes! always change water pump when doing timing belt. because if you do the timing belt, and water pump goes out 10k miles later, you'll have to do the whole job again.
Just like in other videos I've seen on timing belt changes. When the crank pulley bolt gives, it sounds like something broke. Takes a long lever to get enough leverage on that thing.
My bolt for the harmonic balancer pulley snapped off inside the bolt hole! Fingers crossed that don't happen to anyone who reads this comment. Also don't lose your key to the pulley, mine fell into a hole in the frame of the car of all places. Had to make one from a piece of key stock. Total nightmare of a job for me. Better luck to others who do this.
Thank you sooooo much for this video dude, I own this very car and now I'm totally comfortable with this job, which seems easier than my 99 Accent which was a pain in the ass dealing with the tensioner... Anyways, thats a new subscriber to u dude.
@@JM-yx1lm I don't, but I figured it wouldn't hurt, I also spray down all bolts ahead of a job if I can mainly on my own vehicles, I rebuilt the front suspension on my 97 s10 and long before I started I once in a while would spray every nut and bolt, they weren't particularly rusty but it gave it time to work, I figure anything's to make the job go smoother.
Dude, that jack stand was a genius thing. I know i can trust what you are showing here just because of that!!
Agreed. This is the only video I have seen using this technique.

Best video I've found on the timing belt job on 01-05 Civic 1.7L Nice job
One of the best timing belt vid series on TH-cam. Great job.
skweekah Thank you for the comment, glad you like it. cheers

Yes, inspect crankshaft front seal and oil pump areas. Oil can leak from those obviously.

Hi can you please tell me how my tensioner can move if I tighten the bolt that holds it on. Thank you.
Awesome camera work/editing. Realistic and informative presentation. Video was immensely helpful.
What if I did it wrong and removed the tensioner can I put back the pin on the tensioner and reduce my work?
I am not sure why you back set the cam timing when removing the HB bolt. The belt would still be in "time" with the cam and the crank gear that holds the belt.
That spring for the tensioner should be reversed 180°. The pointy part will claw at the timing belt and shred it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

At 1:02 should I use / did you use an impact extension? will 2 chrome extensions be ok?
This video was very informative and easy to replicate. This set of videos was very instrumental in allowing me to perform the same task. Thank you.

how much does a shop charge to change my timing belt on the same engine

2:51 what is this black thing with two ties on ac return line?
10:00 keep the cut end of the tensioner spring away from the belt!! Its been known to shred the timing belt to bits!
I was about to say this too.

hi nice video and very helpful can reuse the tensiner again ? and thanks for your time and share your knowledge..
Wouldn't it be easier to rotate engine with spark plugs removed?
just wondering if there is a way to inspect the timing belt, with out removing everything?any help would be great.nice videos may i add.

did u put the car in gear to lock the engine?
I thought you had to tighten the tensioner bolt after two turns and then pull the pin?

Depends where you are! Here in SoCal a fair price would be $250-350 for labor +Parts. GL
i can't get my car to stay started. i followed the requirements for tdc but car will not run. what can be the problem? thank you for your video and for your time.
should I get the water pump done at the same time? how necessary is it? I'm having the belt done at honda, please suggest for me, thnx in advance!!
yes! always change water pump when doing timing belt. because if you do the timing belt, and water pump goes out 10k miles later, you'll have to do the whole job again.
Absolutely! Also get a new tensioner, valve cover gasket set, and consider changing camshaft + crankshaft seals while in there.
My car cranks but will not start. Checked everything. But no luck. Can't it be that the timing is off?
Hello , what's the size of crank pulley holder mm ? 50 mm or 49 mm ? thank you
50mm
so how long did this actually take you?

I missed that bolt upgraded part!
What a big pain in the ass this job looks like. Excellent how-to video

I have a 2006 civic with a head gasket problem. I need some info if you don't mind
Excellent video, you saved me a ton!!!
Help the torque won't break I broke breaker bars! Yes plural i need this car done by tomorow
Amazing video! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this.
Excellent video. Many many thanks!
My Milwaukee impact wrench made easy work of removing the crank bolt after spraying the bolt with some lubricant.
Sure it did, thats what impacts do. But tell me, how did the spray lube do anything to help? What makes you think the lube made it do anything?

This video,,, verry goog to help me,,, to replace my car is timing belt.
That's definitely 90 inch-lbs on those 10 mm water pump bolts
No thread lock needed ?
Looks like i got even more to do
thanks for the time and info great video
Thanks alot for ur video... very usefull
how money n-m
you put the spring on the tensioner backwards.the open end of the spring is supposed to face away from the tensioner.
Thanks
show...very nice job!
This is a good tutorial
Big job
Timing chain much much much better .... I hate Timing belts
I’m like 1,000 :)
Great write up!
