    your books changed my life. they were the first thing that actually made me feel like i was making some progress on guitar. back in the day i couldn't afford a teacher, and when i saw the metal lead guitar vol1. at my local music store i picked it up out of curiosity. that's about 15years ago now. been a fan of yours ever since.

    Troy, I bought your Heavy Metal lead guitar volume 2 book with the cassette tape back around 1990...I still have it. The original tape still works and I made a copy of it. I also got you series HM lead guitar volumes 1, 2 and 3 w/CD's. Your books changed my approach to playing for sure. It opened my mind up to real musical concepts and theories that the players and bands I listen to use. Your books kicked open that creative door to the long corridor of musical possibilities that the other instructional books did NOT! Thank you to no end Troy!

    I have seen that guitar. You used it on the DVD Guitar Shred DVD that came with the book of the same name to teach sweep picking. I love that book and DVD Metal Guitar.
    And as for scalloped frets, another notable player who scalloped his frets was K.K. Downing of Judas Priest at one time (he can be seen playing scalloped V's these days)

    Troy I also wondered what guitar you actually used in recording those books. I kind of knew it wasn't that red guitar on the cover. I also noted how the name change of an exotic scale called the Spanish-flamenco scale is now referring to the Phrygian-Dominant scale. The original books on HM lead guitar are still completely relevant. I definitely consider you as one of my guitar teachers...actually the first real one who opened my mind up to the academics to music. I appreciate how you stated in the forward of those books to use what you can theoretically "without burying yourself in the academics of music theory". That profound statement removed the fear and intimidation often associated with musical approach many players succum to. Your teaching style cleared the way for many players...You did that for me Troy.

    • @TroyStetinaMusic
      @TroyStetinaMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well thank you for that! BTW, back in the 80s I only heard of that scale as 'spanish flamenco' but at some point I remember reading Satriani talking about it as Phrygian Dominant, which frankly is a much better label since it's descriptive of what it actually is (Phrygian b2, and contain the Dom7 arpeggio). And spanish flamenco is a terrible name because the reason it's associated with Spanish style guitar is because of the influence of the Moors (Arabic) in Spain when they ruled it for centuries, so they brought that Arabic influence. It's more on an Arabian scale, which is why it's also in Balkan ethnic music and Jewish music. It's "middle eastern" then. Calling it Spanish Flamenco is about as historically ignorant as saying Amerigo Vespucci "discovered" the "new world." Well, it was there, with people, cultures and even civilizations. Very much a matter of 'causasity' it would seem.

    I remember Troy casually telling me about this guitar in an email several years ago when I had the guts to just write to him to say that the tone on the Lead methods was incredible, and that I have never heard a more impressive one than that. I still keep the email. Note that he didn't know me....I was just a stranger who wrote an impulse email through his website. I dare anyone find a more monster-like tone than Troy has on these recordings....that guitar is the perfect metal guitar. Everything else sounds tiny and buzzy in comparison. Coupled with the very loud Marshall, the St Blues just sounds incredible.... Tube amp simulators can never replicate that. Some guitars just seem to have a more "piano" like sound, with more natural harmonics and natural sustain, even without plugging in. But to find one it's the luck of the draw; I would never have parted with that tone on the Lead method....I think Troy really shines there, but of course this is now very well known. Right off the bat, the Lead methods grab your balls with that Godzilla-sized tone.....Thanks Troy for the video 🤘🎶

    Hey Troy I used to play guitar and started playing rock and metal 17 years ago back in my country and copy of your book was the only way to enter the world of guitar and all the generations in that Era were so eager to find your methods anyway but the thing that happened to me as far as foundation and musical aspects are concerned I always asked myself Hey wait a minute what I'm doing and where actually those licks and practices in your books do they get me so and after so many years I realized that many many great guitar players specially in metal scene aren't actually playing fast and they all have their own unique sound ..long story short there is a trap in your methods which is double edge one side provides you with skills but the other side gets you stuck in a box that's the thing I didn't like about your methods. And I sold my guitar but recently I bought a LTD guitar and started playing after many many years and Hey I ordered your methods again on Amazon so I could support you because we used the copy version. I'm happy that you are active in TH-cam keep up the good work 👏 🙌

    • @TroyStetinaMusic
      @TroyStetinaMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First, thank you. In regard to the 'trap' you speak of, I'd say that the first stage of learning is technique and mimicking established styles, then comes deepening the connection to your own inner musical imagination and vision. You'll find that is addressed to some degree in Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar and also in the later book, Fretboard Mastery. There are stages of learning, and MLG is intermediate level. Also, my upcoming methods delve deeper into that aspect of following your own voice.... and some new material on that at patreon.com/TroyStetina

      @@sisajtegabre the only issue I have with Gibson is the one piece neck , gets real thin at the nut ( broken headstocks ) . So I actually prefer the scarf joint on the epiphones . The one I have is at least 3 pieces in the body , but it just resonates so well ! Feels alive in my hands when I'm playing. I also came up with a solution to the neck dive , I purchased strap locks and a small spacer and longer screw for the upper bout . Now it hangs comfortably in the playing position . Cheers.

      Technique must change to play faster. I've laid out the process at Patreon.com/TroyStetina tier 6 "Face Melter" with practice materials. Basically you start with tremolo picking, slow it down and time it without changing the motion. Then you work on each of the string crossing mechanics. And no, it's really nothing to do with talent or lack thereof... it's a matter of having the right approach
