    I hope this video reaches out to a lot of people. This is the most important thing i got from my psychology degree. This stuff can be extrapolated to many things, like politics, religion, sports.. Just accept what is different and respect it. It's about time humanity embrace tolerance among each others. Let our diversity be our greatest asset. Thanks Troy for this video. Let there be kindness.

    Well there are certain standards in each genre. And I totally understand judging guitarists by that standard. There’s no the best it’s just that there’s guitarists in each gerne who really stick out for various reasons. So I always say they’re one of the currently best leading guitarists in that gerne. But I agree with your general sentiment. Very good attitude!

    An interesting paradox: social networks were created so that people could better understand each other. But instead, now it is on social networks that people argue and do not even hear themselves. And they constantly argue about what in real life it would never even occur to them to discuss.
    Thanks for the interesting lecture, Troy!

    • @TroyStetinaMusic
      @TroyStetinaMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed. I’d say Social networks have given a perceived insulation so people feel free to say what they really feel, without contemplating it. As a result the true ugliness of humanity is being revealed for what it is. It’s just a reality check IMO. Politeness is a mask we put on to get along better in society, and the internet has largely removed that mask

    Spot on! Over the years the concept of "greatest guitarist" has blighted music media and has actively drawn people into this pointless conversation. Periodically a new technician will surface and is hailed as the new guitar messiah based on innovative or flawless technique. They have a fleeting period in the spotlight before a new messiah appears and they relegated into the background. Music and musicality is about the connection between performer and listener, which will ebb and flow depending on the listeners frame of mind and current musical appetite.

    Troy..You hit the nail right on the head!! We used to argue about music and guitar playing all the time when we were kids. I literally used to see the occasional fist fight over it. And it was all nothing but childish pride and ego. But now that I am much older, and looking back…Oh how juvenile and childish we really were!! If we didn’t have such stubborn, immature egos… Perhaps WE OURSELVES would’ve ended up better guitar players!! THANK YOU Mr. Stetina for all the playing tips, and for putting these words of wisdom out there for our younger generation! 👍😎👍

    100% agree. There are many talented guitarists out there. I don't have a "best" guitarist, drummer, bassist, band, song, album, movie, book or whatever. I wouldn't want to limit myself to just one of any of those things.

    As I've noted in the past: Science is the methological pursuit of ignorance--the more you learn, the more you realize you how ignorant you are about deeper and broader topics.
    Thanks for sharing, Troy. I picked up Speed Leads in 2007 and still use it to this day--though I don't practice it enough! Life has a funny way of getting in the way of things we're trying to do, and it's too often found me putting creating music on the back burner. I hope that as my children become more interested, I can help them avoid this mistake.

      Agreed. It’s all about the How, which really reveals the underlying stance of the heart. And I’d say nothing wrong with expressing one’s favorite… it’s when people forget the word “favorite” and substitute the word “best”, implying some kind of objective truth behind the opinion, which, consequently implies other opinions are “less valid”… that’s where it goes into the ditch. It’s the premise that there is only one Truth in a world of 7 billion perceptions

    I feel that in recent years the world of guitar has changed a lot. Everyone is competing who plays more exaggerated. Guitarists come out with such extreme things that they seem unnecessary... well, they don't express anything. time a Japanese boy playing the caprice 16 with his left hand and with another guitar in the other hand playing bass. 4 arm guitars. videos with a lot of alien... but I don't hear melody anymore... I feel like guitarists used to improve their technique to express themselves better. now he is the one who plays ridiculously exaggerated.

    Here's the criteria for judging the best guitarist. Could guitarist A reproduce the music of guitarist B with no difficulty and would guitarist B look like a fool trying to reproduce guitarist A's music. There is no ambiguity in this. If one guitarist lacks the skill to reproduce the music of another then that guitarist is inferior.

    • @TroyStetinaMusic
      @TroyStetinaMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if you are talking exclusively about technique alone and disregarding creativity and unique artistic expression. Also this idea is problematic because to “copy” another’s playing is to assume that it’s just a matter of playing the notes correctly, when feel, tone and nuance can make all the difference. But in theory I agree with your statement excepting those 2 points. And I’ll also say that as a person who’s recorded not for note performances of a number of artists is Sig Liz series, I actually do have experience in this area… which leads me to a 3rd point: top guitarists are in most cases not capable of recreating other top guitarists music faithfully for the most part

    • @JohnPrepuce
      @JohnPrepuce ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no unanimous definition for "best" so the question becomes an exercise in futility. If you truly wanted to "rank" guitarists, perhaps a better method would be to ask: "Which guitarist is best at this particular skill, or genre." Even then, most answers would rely heavily on subjectivity but it would at least narrow your options.

  • @camxgtr
    @camxgtr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    you make some excellent points ...and i agree we can have diffrent opinions ...but some of what u say sounds like subjective oriented psychology...like theres no truth only our oown opinions...and we all have a right to our own opinions...and u have yours...well sometimes theres right and wrong...truth and error...and good and better...and sometimes people are better at soome skills than other people...we all have god given strenghths and gifts....and u can see it...the bible says there is right and wrong ...and truth.....i totally agree u need to be humble aand be teachable...and admit u dont know everything....but sometimes some playeers simply ARE better at some skills...cos god made tthem that way....and i think the real issue is how those gifted players treat others and wether they give god the glory ...i dont see a problem with voicing your opinion and saying a certain player does something better than another...sometimes it IS a fact...and obvious ..not just an opinion...i totally agree the iidea of a greatest player is ridiculous...but dif players all do dif things better than others...and its not just an opinion..and we can all learn something from dif players cos of the things they do better than others.....if u take this everyonne has a right to their own opinion thing to an extreme...then u cant even tell people your a christian and bible is the truth...cos its just your opinion..and not a fact...

    • @TroyStetinaMusic
      @TroyStetinaMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like you maybe missed the 2nd part of the video at 5:50? No, not everything is subjective; there are facts in the physical world and there are also what I'd call 'human truths" such as the primacy of Love, the wisdom of Forgiveness, etc. Clarity comes by knowing the difference between opinion, which is born of perspective, and abstract truths, which are ideals we strive to live by. Those Truths will tend to create consequences throughout life, which we must each bear out. "You can deny reality, but you cannot escape the consequences of denying reality."

    I'll say this - clearly Troy is the "world's smartest guitar player" (kidding). But seriously, he's right on all counts. What we also should recognize (in the larger context) is that there are people in the world (particularly in the US) who derive their self-worth, power, influence, and (wait for it), INCOME from conflict. Continuing on-going conflict in the US is a multi-billion dollar business. I won't mention the names, but there are people who would have no power/influence/income or self-worth if they did not intentionally continue some form of conflict (aka "hate") - pick your form of bigotry here. It creates a division from within that is bad for the Country. (By the way, the "Big Red Machine" was the best baseball team in MLB history.) Good job, Troy. Miss ya bud.

      yeah. It comes down to a matter of definition I think. What does 'best' really mean? And the good folks at the magazines seem to skew toward defining 'best' as those who have made the biggest impact on the social sphere. That's not about guitar playing, on the one hand, so one might argue such considerations should be irrelevant. But on the other hand, if the purpose of technique is to facilitate artistry, and the purpose of artistry is to create a social statement and impact society in some way, then those guitarists who have done so may be included. That's the reasoning I think. But yeah, Kurt Cobain wasn't a guitarist IMO. He was a singer/songwriter who happened to play the guitar.

    Yes there are for the most part no right answers. Mostly it's subjective, HOWEVER there is one caveat. Any list that doesn't have Hendrix as #1 and Eddie Van Halen as 1A is in my humble opinion fraudulent. Doesn't matter who the list has after that in whatever order. If they don't acknowledge the two guys who made the most impact on modern guitar playing at the top of the food-chain, then I don't want to hear what the list in question has to say after that.

      @@TroyStetinaMusic again I agree with everything you're pointing out with the exception of it applying those two guys not getting additional recognition above and beyond the rest of the great players who've come and gone. Everything has sacred cows and as far as I'm concerned (and as millions of others would likely agree) those are the sacred cows of the guitar world/genre. And possibly an honorable mention should go to somebody like Segovia who many essentially view as the first guitar hero.

    I think it can be looked at objectively, if you're open-minded & logical.. Even scientific test with babies prove that beauty is objective, not subjective. Same with audio, but most people hear with their eyes 🙉... I'm not a fan of Allan Holdsworth or Frank Gambale's music but objectively in the year 1984 the best guitarist in the world were: Allan Holdsworth, Yngwie, Eric Johnson, Frank Gambale, SRV, Neal Schon & a few more. Not only for technical abilities but because of their beautiful vocal like qualities with precision & vibrato.. there are a lot of guitarist who are technically skilled but their vocal like qualities on the instrument sound like a goat stuck under a car 🐐🚗.
    Anthony Kiedis & Christina Aguilera can sing the same simple melody & hit all of the right notes, but objectively Christina Aguilera is a better singer, I'm not a fan of her, but the tonal quality & precision objectively make her a better singer even if it's the "same notes". That same standard can be applied to guitar players.

      Yes, technique has an objective element. But go deeper. What is the point or VALUE of that technique? Here it becomes about art, and opinion. So if technique only exists for the purpose of art, then in the end opinion runs the show, dictating what is important and what is not.

      @@TroyStetinaMusic Not necessarily, opinion steps aside at that point & hard work & experience would run the show. Opinion can run the show if you put in zero effort whatsoever too, Da Vinci could have made a painting that looked like 💩 on a 🖼️, but someone who ony paints 💩 on a 🖼️ could Not make one that looks like Da Vinci's. There are people who love famous guitar players who bend out of tune & have spastic sounding vibrato. The same people will hate on Yngwie, without ever practicing enough to achieve what he has. People with no abilities or people who have perfected their abilities can have equal sized egos. Society can ONLY go to a better place if people recognize quality... That being said, punk music or tramp-art would not disappear, it would still have its fans, but those fans could never force society into falsely believing it is the Pinnacle of mankind's ability🙈🖼️, 🙉🎶... Only self-evident👁️ 🖼️, 👂👂🎶 could be acknowledged that way. It may seem cruel to think that way, judgment based on qualifications vs. Judgment made on egotistical jealousy could never run the show. And true mastery is least likely to judge because they know what it takes to make it down the path, or to the top of the mountain.

      @@BaroqueBlues well we are now discussing values. And I hear you saying that there are some values that are “higher values” than other values. We have to be careful here I think. For example I would agree that Love is a higher value than Vengeance. But it cannot be “proved” in any way scientifically, at least with our current limitations. The value of art is always subjective, despite the fact that one fixed creation may require highly developed skills and another require no technique at all. And therefore, because it is a subjective Meade of value, it’s merely my opinion that DaVincis painting are “better” than a pile of shit. A mystic would see all of the energy of creation equally in both. So When I start telling you that my opinion is grounded in “absolute truth” we are heading toward argument… on a path to unnecessary conflict. But if I recognize that my opinion is true for me , but yours may be different based on your experience and values, and I respect your right to disagree, we can coexist at peace and yet have different perspectives. I’m not saying there’s no objective facts. I’m saying that in the end, which facts are deemed meaningful and which are meaningless is a matter of perspective. And furthermore you are most welcome to disagree with everything I say including my paradigm that subjectively chosen values underlie our choices of what is important. I’m merely expressing my opinion

      @@TroyStetinaMusic Values can be proven objectively, by their fruits 🥭🥥🍅🍇🍍🍎🍏🍐. Re-watch the Wonka chocolate factory movie from the '70s, it's the story of these higher values & how if you have them, they take you to a higher place, it shows you there are certain qualities one must possess to reach those higher values (one of them being work)... It also shows that you don't have to be at the perceived Top of society to obtain those objective values. Observe their circumstances, observe the lyrics to the music, observe why the candy/fruits of one's labor aren't always handed out for free. I purchased several of your books through the years, the same way you don't just hand out your teaching method completely free. Shows you have value in your abilities & methods, & your fruit is your fan base & students accomplishments. The value you put on your work is the same value Wonka had for not always leaving the doors of the chocolate factory open for anyone to loot. The movie shows the main kid who had the highest values, did the hard work & the value it brought to others was evident, even though it was tough on him & the shortcuts were tempting, in the end he was at the top of his mountain 🏔️, even against perceived limitations.

    hey troy how about proof reading as a thing with youtuber with hal leonard music. people put their video of doing hal leonards stuff on youtube and then let a group of fan club members view and rate each other on ability to do it right which just means grading people. this make it an interactive class and would improve people watching the site you just have to have sight admins. also video game server that are hourly at 4 hour per sub per day equal 6 times the value of a sub from one to 6 as in 500 people at 12 per year is 6000 but with 6 server per day for the working man in a game like rust you get 36000 bucks. per server at 500 dollar a months.gg
