  • Dump trailer is done and out of here. These are some of the most common questions you all have asked me about the trailer so I decided to make a video instead of trying to answer each comment. Thanks for watching everyone!!

    The materials you used were top of the line. Your hoist system would dump 10 tons which is what they use on 20’ trailers. You built yours over and beyond which will last you forever. You did an awesome job and congrats on finishing it!

    I built my flatbed on my channel after watching yours but I would buy a used dump trailer. Its alot of work and I still dont have a shop ready for big projects. I can imagine the endless days and nights to accomplish this. Still a fantastic build.

    I was going to do that myself, You take your checkbook to the trailer shop in the morning and you are using it in the afternoon. You can't beat the trailer Mfg. For pricing on raw materials. It does look great and you did a fantastic job.

    I had a Big Tex 7x14 , the only differece was the doors at the rear were 2 that swung out to each side and it had ramps to load the skid steer, I paid 5k used in 1998, it was pretty beat up and used so 20 plus years later to have a new one built for 10k isnt a bad price, you did an awsome job and the paint runs will buff out easily with wet sanding, good work!

    I made a 14x5 single axle flat bed trailer. I've got 600 in the the whole material list. Including 10ft 2x6 and 2x10 wood deck and 4ft rear diamond plate flooring. I use it everyday. Dump trailer 5x10 low profile tandem axle is the next trailer. Not sure if i want a gooseneck or bumper pull but im making it also. Its feasible for me as i can get scrap material as i work in miscellaneous welding, metal buildings, barndominiums, etc.

    I think you are right about someone building there own trailer. with the cost of metal you don't save enough over buying one unless you have lots of time. a 14k 7x14 will cost you $8200. I keep thinking about but cant justify it. I;ve seen alot of 1t's with dump boxes for $3or 4k. Enjoyed your series yery much keeep up the good work.

    I’ve gone back and forth on building one and my numbers came up to around what you got. The only way I could see it being feasible is if I got a used car trailer for a super cheap price, and I’m talking like $1000 or less which would basically end a rust bucket at that point. On average a 7 ton 14’ runs around $10,000 so the real question is that between 100 to 200 man hours worth saving around $3000. Trailer manufacturers can buy in bulk at wholesale prices so their materials are probably running closer to $5000 and with an experienced crew I imagine they could knock out a trailer in between 40 and 60 man hours. Especially if they are assembling several at the same time. As you can tell, the amount of time I’ve thought about this I could have spent working and actually bought a nice dump trailer with that money.

    I have a 14' heavy trailer already that the bearing went out and destroyed the spindle. I'm figuring about $1200 in steel and $1500 in my hydraulics. It might make sense for me to do it but if you look around you can find used ones for around $3000. Still debating on tackling it

    limiting chains are set before you drop and run...it doesnt take much to learn where to set the chains and what speed to drive at to achieve the depth of material you want. i think the attraction to building your own trailer is building it better than what you can by. just like setting those axles back so far. something i always thought would be a great a addition is a wireless remote. much easier to lift the bed while spreading driveways in the cab than starting and stopping to raise the bed. i think it turned out great. nice job young man!

    • @spinningedge8790
      @spinningedge8790 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen people install winch remotes to dump trailers for up and down. Like you said you set the gap and raise your trailer.

    • @j_moffitt
      @j_moffitt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks sir, I understand that part but there is still that little bit of time loss to run and jump in the truck unless you wire up a wireless remote

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@j_moffitt i agree. a dump trailer is a less expensive alternative to owning, maintaining, licensing and insuring a dump truck. it is a compromise for sure. it doesnt do some things as well as a dump truck would but all around it is just fine.

  • @davidgarrett8640
    @davidgarrett8640 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You would have way less time in the next trailer. Simply because you don't have to spend so much time on figuring out the mechanics of it. For instance your tailgate to fender clearance, toolbox lid, and how you wanted to build your gate hinge and latches.

  • @IndependenceIron
    @IndependenceIron 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Don't forget the cost of quality. You can't buy the quality and durability like that. I am rebuilding a load trail 16k trailer right now and i was surprised by some of the corners they cut to build the thing.

    Great subject... Lots of capable DIY’ers contemplating this same question. Thanks for the answer.
    My $0.02: With the cost of buying all the separate materials and components at retail prices, it really doesn’t make a lot of sense to DIY. In my research the only way it becomes financially feasible is to buy old parts/pieces that have been laying around in someone’s shop, or to buy some basic materials for dirt cheap prices at an auction or similar (I.e., old car trailer), and to repurpose it.

    • @adammiller8415
      @adammiller8415 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i agree fir a basic trailer its not worth it. However for a more high end trailer build it can be. I just finished building a 14' gooseneck dump trailer. hydraulic jacks, 1/4" floor, telescopic hoist, and 8k axles. the closet company doing this is diamond c and they only offer a 7 guage or 3/16" floor. There price for it from any dealer within 4 hours of me was 25,000. i built mine for 14k in materials and finish. i did paint and primer inside and the outside, frame, and neck are all line x bedliner. it cost a little under half and only took me and my uncle whos a fabricator 1 week. for a basic trailer no its not worth. for a custom trailer it is

    Its shrodinger worth it. It's both worth building your own and it isn't at the same time. You can buy a cheaper trailer than you can build. But you can build a better trailer than you can buy.

  • @patrickmccallum5955
    @patrickmccallum5955 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Trailer came out great and as far as the paint runs just means there’s paint there as far as cost between 8 and 10k final selling price is reasonable cause you basically built a custom trailer

    There are only two ways building your own trailer makes $$$ sense.
    1. You are getting the expensive parts free or very cheap.
    2. You want/ need something very custom.
    Otherwise the big manufacturers buy those parts way cheaper than you can.
    Great build!!

    I've built several trailers over the years. Unless you have access to all materials at wholesale, you can't come close to building any trailer cheaper than you can buy it. But thats not the point, you build it because you enjoy the project of building it yourself.

  • @OceanofMaya
    @OceanofMaya 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's really hard, almost impossible, to build a trailer more cost-effectively than some of the mass production units. If one likes the fabrication process and the elements of that - that has merit at least for building for ones self. But, to build and sell...w/ the skills & equipment required to do something like this...not for that reason. GJ. I liked watching the series - your welds are much better than you think they are (unless you were joking:)).

    From a reputable company for a 7x12 or 14 low profile will cost you over 12-14k. Then when you buy a new trailer you have to pay sales tax. Also Iv bought a lot of work trailers and it don’t matter the manufacturer, they have all had things that needed to be modified, fixed. If you get into the custom built dump trailers your min 13k to start.
