  • This week, we made some changes in our calf barn. I discuss exploring the possibility of feeding our calves in groups instead of individual hutches.

It’s great that you and your family looked how other farms run their farm. You can take what you think would or would not work for your farm. What works for some doesn’t work for others. I love how you explain everything so well

My way of looking at it is don't fix it if it aint broke. One thing to consider is labor. The things you talked about is labor saving things. If labor is a problem then these things you were talking about is probably a good idea.

That's very interesting the weight difference especially if your selling them. Great video

We're not selling any of these heifer, the main reason for weighing them was to see if we could improve their weight gain.

Interessante video Piet. Ik ben er door jou ook mee begonnen met 4 liter te geven aan de kalveren. Ik weeg ze niet maar als het in Amerika lukt, hier dan ook wel zeker. 15 kg extra is immens. Groetjes

New to your channel and this video was the first I’ve watched so very interesting. 👍 Coming from the UK, we use single pens and being closed now with TB means we can’t sell. We have had to group new born calves due to space issue and it’s a nightmare. Calves sucking navels and worse when bull calves are being sucked, drinking urine. Gets worse when they get older. We have ordered an automatic feeder to help with labour but importantly after visiting some farms, we have seen the auto feeder is a massive help in preventing navel sucking. Calve sucks after drinking it’s milk and eventually gets tired. Anyhow the single pens for us is the way forward

Group feeding here in AUS and have just moved to locking type for these pens. 12-14/pen. Total of 200 lockers with about 400 calves to go through in next 2 months. Previously quicker drinkers could easily pinch slower drinkers. Just started calving for this year but seems like they are working well and is making feeding quicker once calves are trained.

Thank you for sharing! Are you feeding with bottles?

    • @matthewglennen1172
      @matthewglennen1172 ปีที่แล้ว

@@pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047 on teats but not bottle. There 5lt buckets with a teat on them. Have 4 buckets screwed together on a 25ml square tube for easier handling. We then go along with our milk trailer (same theory as a milk taxi) and use a trigger nozzle to fill each one. Got plenty of photos of your interested.

Was so interesting to hear what and why your doing things. Thinking better for the calves socially and mentally. Unless one of the calves is abusive and then like you said would just separate. Can see why you like being in this barn. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes Piet for a fun and safe week. Deb

Hiya Piet, all the calves look absolutely great, clean and healthy! Glad you're looking at different avenues but looks like you're doing an awesome job ( crew as well ).
I think grouping few together good idea, they are happier! I'm sure you're aware of Jan @SASKDUTCHKID in Canada, they have an operation much like yours.
BTW I'm with you on hands on, no robotics....can manage better! I like the pink buckets for milk, do calves think they're udders? Lol😂
    Continuous success❤

A tip from another farmer Sandi Brock who uses a cart for big bales if you want to bed calves easy

First thing our cheese order came yesterday (Mar 29)!! The cheese is great!!!!! Also I am excited to see the move towards group pens inside. It will be interesting to see the results but I suspect there will be a lot of savings in labor time.

The metal part was made by a weld shop, the plastic dividers came from farmtek if I remember right.

Thank you! We try to move the calves into a clean pen with fresh straw quickly after calving. Once the calves are moved into our nursery, they receive vaccinations, a probiotic paste, and quality tested colostrum.

At what age do they go on to four litres ? Once or twice a day ? Having had group experience I’d stay with individual pens.
    Cheers 🇦🇺

For me as an german farmer ist normal to use buckets were the calf has to suck on, so they drink over longer time.
I really dont want to say you have to use some of these, but you should lock to feeders from the Company "milkbar" the "tits" on these things are going dawm fuckung hard and all in the group gonna get the same amount of milk.
And the a way better than feeding stations. If you buy one of those for a group of 8 buy a 10 times feeder or by 10 buy a 12 times.....you understand.
    Have a good day

Thank you! I tried a milk bar to feed our beef calves last summer, I am considering that as an option for group pen milk feeding.

Looks like lock ups and switching from milk bucket to grain bucket would solve most problems. Having them restricted to their grain right away dries their mouths out and takes away 90% of their sucking desire.
