The water is pulled from the ground to water crops. Water is absorbed by the roots of crops. What, pray tell happens to water not used by the plants? Oh, it returns to the water table...

That’s just not how it works dude…from a surface irrigation system like most farmers run the vast majority of water that isn’t respired by the plants simply evaporates.

That's why they call them senior rights!

Glad to hear this good news, I hope it is that, good news for the farmers. I hope this does not effect the ever rising cost of food.

Some did stop watering and they now have a damaged crop.

Doesn’t the Idaho Cobalt mine need more water? How can we fight climate change?

No , I don't think the junior water rights can be trusted anymore since they showed they are perfectly willing to ignore what they signed years ago.
Time for senior water rights to drill larger and deeper wells than them .
Making it so the shallower wells will just dry up first ... and gravity will be what enforces the pecking order of water rights.
Cuz at that juncture of not living with agreements ... who really cares if the snake river is not but a trickle anymore .

It's about the COBALT MINE to
Begin. Cobalt NEEDS LOTS OF WATER!

It's called Western Water Law, any water user in the West must either have the water rights are buy the water rights. This includes mines. This was a dispute between a senior water rights holder and people with lesser water rights. Did not involve any mines.

Come on people this is not that hard. Get your terms correct. Groundwater is water that is pumped from the aquifer. Depending on your elevation it could be a thousand feet or deeper well. Surface water is anything above that. Get it?

When I visited salem massachusetts I found out that witch dunking was not about evil spells it was about those in power taking land from desperate little old ladies. This sounds like big fish eat little fish. Dunk the little man and take his land. Dunk the little man and take his land. DUNK the LITTLE MAN and TAKE HIS LAND!!!

I foresee another agreement that kicks the can down the road again and we will be right back here again in a few years. The people that could actually solve this problem (hydrologists who realistically look at how much water there is to give) are going to be the least listened to at the negotiation…the same as they were ignored in 2016…and in the 1970s…and in the 1950s

Past time for Eastern Idaho farmers to ditch spuds and start growing hemp.
A fraction of precious water with no herbicides or pesticides.
There's a brand new hemp processing plant a hundred miles west of there.
