It started in 2000 when Michig@n lost that shotout to Northwestern, even tho they would later beat OSU, Jim Tressel would be hired right after and the rivalry was never the same. They then lost to Ohio State A LOT and lost to App. State while being ranked in the top 5 and then lost Lloyd Carr, lost to Ohio State a few more times, a lot of bowl Ls, losing to MSU on a blocked punt, lost to Urban Meyer 5 times straight including one in double overtime and have lost a few head coaches who they thought would fix it but did not.

As an NDSU fan, I love watching FBS upsets, with all the cocky attitudes, the "You really think you're going to come to our massive stadium and beat us on our home opener?" Yes we will. Seeing all those stunned faces makes the victory so much sweeter.
15 years ago....it was one of the first CFB games I've ever watched and it definitely won't be the last. This game set the tone for the 2007 CFB season. Upset after upset after upset.
I can't believe this was 8 years ago... I went back and watched clips of this game and Texas vs. Usc in the 2006 Rose Bowl. Those are two of the most memorable games in my brain's college football archives.
This is literally the first time I've watched the entire highlights of this game. Holy hell. I completely forgot that there was two blocked field goals.
"AND THE KICK IS BLOCKED!!! Appalachian State has stunned the college football world! One of the greatest upsets in sports history! Blocked by Corey Lynch!" No matter how many times I hear that, it never gets old.
As a life long Ohio State Buckeye fan, I can say that this game, aside from major Buckeye wins, is simply the greatest ending I've ever seen. I cheered, and cheered and cheered.
That score is meaningless. They should'a pounded App. State back then and didn't. 52-14 doesn't impress me when the difference between the teams is so extreme.
This game changed both teams forever. Michigan has never retained the same level of national dominance, and has stilll not won a confrence title in the years since. App State got promoted to FBS, built a new stadium, and has become a respected & competitive mid major team with multiple top 25 ranked seasons. Talk about Parity.
That Michigan fan applauding the App State touchdown at 1: 26..."Oh that's cute, they scored, good for them haha." Would have loved to see his reaction at the end of the game LOL
fucking hilarious. i'm glad you added the little part at the beginning, too. "Mike Hart and his teammates eyeing a National Championship." Appalachian State was just too fast for them haha they were some quick little dudes.
We OSU fans are never going to let Mishitgan fans live this down. They try to cope with it by saying "Appalachian State won the National Championship in their division". Who cares? Mishitgan was heavy favorites in this game and they dropped from #5 to out of the top 25 completely after this loss so clearly the NCAA didn't see it the same way as Mishitgan fans did.
I was at Spartan Stadium for MSU's opening game of the season that day and they kept updating the stadium on the score throughout the game. As the MSU game was ending it sounded like Michigan was going to squeal away with the victory. But at least MSU won so all was well. So I'm riding the bus from the stadium back to the parking lot and wondering what is going on in that Michigan game. Me and my Gpa get off the bus and are going back to the car but we bump right into a tailgate at the parking lot who has a TV and has the App State game on. It's literally the final play of the game. The timing was incredible. So literally the only thing I see from that entire game is Michigan lining up for a FG to win the game. The kick gets blocked and the entire tailgate party goes crazy and me and my Gpa wander back to the car in stunned amazement and laughter. That was a great day.
Mike Hart came from Onondaga high school in my area, having scored 207 rushing touchdowns across four seasons in high school. He legit carried Michigan on his back this game and had no help... props to Appalachian State
What a lot of people didn't take into account was, App. State was coming off their 3rd straight national championship & was the first college team in their division to win that many in a row since the playoffs were instituted in 1978. I wasn't completely surprised by the outcome since it was the first game of the year & this one, to me, had upset written all over it. What's really funny was the Michigan fans who thought there were coming to watch their team beat up on some scrubs.Surprise!
One of the greatest events in all of any sports, #1 was the 1980 USA victory over the USSR ice hockey team in the Olympics. Nothing can top that one. Appalachian State beating Michigan is in the top 5.
U.S Navy Veteran served 8 years 🇺🇸!!! I remember this game like it was yesterday I was in my first year of my Navy service off duty weekend at a Down town sports bar in Chicago, Illinois Where I was Stationed at Obviously at the end of this game the entire Bar was Stunned/Shocked & yes including my self lol !!!
Around this time APP had won 2 div 1-AA championships and went on to win a 3rd in a row this season. They always drew local talent given they're a mountain school, sometimes the locals were big 10 talent who wanted to be near home. absolute monsters.
Why wouldn’t you take a knee on first down, then spike it with a couple of seconds left instead of kicking on first down and giving Michigan 30 seconds to get into field goal range? It worked out but the coach about blew it
Its amazing how quickly strategy changed in football for the better over the last decade or so. As well as App State played, they almost lost due to what today would have been considered an unbelievably stupid decision nowadays. App State kicked the eventual game-winning field goal on FIRST AND GOAL AND 30 SECONDS LEFT. Michigan had just one timeout left, which means that all App State had to do was kneel down twice to force Michigan to use their final timeout, let the clock run down, then spike the ball on 3rd down with 2-3 seconds left to set up for the chip-shot, walk-off FG as time expires. (App State was out of timeouts at this point, so they could not just call a timeout.) This all would have been extremely easy to do. Instead, for no good reason, they gave Michigan the ball back needing only a FG of their own to win. That meant that UM only really needed one big play to set that up, which they got. But, I suppose God was smiling upon App State that day, and instead we got to see one of the most iconic plays in, not just college, but all of football history. So, it worked out in the end, but the moral of the story is clock management is important.
I went to a college near App State and that year, The Longest Yard came out. In the movie, Adam Sandler referenced scheduling a tune-up game and hosting a team like Appalachian State. Many players at App State saw the movie and got pissed off and used it as motivation.
I would love to see a documentary about the WHOLE 2007 college football season, that season was so crazy. This game would just the start of the craziness of that season!
i really appreciate this video showing both sides of the action. it really sets up the great moments, and the finish when people upload videos like that.
The one couching mistake was to kick it on first down when u could have killed some more clock. You almost give up the game at the end good thing your players have the nfl style field goal blocking technique down. But app state was a great team and I see why they won 3 years in a row in the Division 2
I remember watching the replay of this game on ESPN classic that year, and most people don't give App St. justice just cuz they're not a division 1 school. App St. played this game like it was their 5th or 6th game that year. Armanti Edwards and his receivers' timing on routes and passes was that good. almost no rust whatsoever.
Michigan is one of the most storied programs in college football history, no one can deny that, but this win was undeniably one of the greatest upsets in sports history, let alone college football history. I have never watched a more exciting game in my life. Michigan takes way too many risks though. This loss and their loss to OSU last year were both caused by untimely risks where they went for 2 when they didn't need to and those points piled up.
Michigan fans in a nutshell: -Stop living in the past! This is one of the greatest games in the history of Ohio State football, even though the Buckeyes didn't play in it. Ohio State fans felt so good after Appalachian St's upset win over Michigan, it's almost like OSU was taking part in this game. I remember Appalachian St. fans were given free meals at restaurants all over Ohio after App St's shocking upset win over the hated Wolverines.
I once worked with a die hard UM fan and this very day we were both working while listening to the game. It's easy to tell when someone's mad but he was one step beyond that.
I'm not a Michigan fan, but they're playing an App State team that is a shadow of the team from 2007. They went 4-8 last season and probably don't have the play makers that the 2007 team had. Still, it'd be funny if it was close.
RollOnToVictory Actually, Appalachian State has won 3 FCS national championships. From 2005-2007. And countless Socon conference championships. They were considered one of the powerhouses in FCS football hence, the move to the FBS. In there first year in FBS they are 6-6 and bowl eligible which is extremely hard to do especially for a first year school. Lastly, Appy state has 6 current players in the NFL which is an impressive number for a FCS school.
Everyone gives credit to Jackson and Edwards for APSU, but that undersized o-line handled Michigan all day. This was all about taking your opponent lightly and not properly preparing. Even if that last second FG isn't blocked and goes thru, this game still ends up as an embarrassment for them. Good thing they choked at that FG too. Haha. #MichiganFail
Best thing about this game was that App state genuinely beat Michigan, no fluke at all they played really well

They had some nice play calling too. Cool play designs to utilize that speed.

Ohio State fans felt so good after Appalachian St's upset win over Michigan, it's almost like OSU was taking part in this game.
I remember Appalachian St. fans were given free meals at restaurants all over Ohio after App St's shocking upset win over the hated Wolverines.
As an Ohio State fan, I come back to this video many times a year just to have a smile 😁
Plus they've moved up to the FBS so they will struggle for a while until they get some top recruits.
so it would technically be an even BIGGER upset since Michigan is actually good and AppState is in a lull even by FCS standards.
Michigan 5-6 this year anymore excuses for getting blown out?
I'm a Purdue fan, I hate the Maize and Blue
Every single time I watch these highlights I get chills.
Who's here from App State Vs Texas A&M?
An irony about this game is it was the first game ever televised on the Big Ten Network.
Haha. #MichiganFail
i thought the same thing about those sturdy linemen, great analysis...starts up front
52-14 I was laughing uncontrollably lol
My App St. Football t-shirt is still my fav!
