Dry Camping at the Trona Pinnacles in California

Our last desert boondocking spot during this years snowbird season was the Trona Pinnacles BLM area in California. It's located on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains a few hours drive from LA.
In an otherwise flat featureless desert about 500 ancient tufa pinnacles sprout up from the desert floor, as high as 140 feet.
In this video I show you some of the bizarre landscape and our campsite location.

I actually had to look it up as neither me or my wife could remember! The plant is the Searles Valley Minerals Company and they still harvest soda ash. The town was named Trona, for the 'soil' called trona. The plant processing causes the smell. I'm not sure if you would have smelled it out where you camped. I remember it well when in the area of the town, kind of like the rotten egg smell in Yellowstone, but different! Should you ever pass that way again, and spend any time exploring, I recommend checking out the small town of Randsburg. Mining is still a big business in that general area and Randsburg is a very small touristy town that was a mining town. At least it used to be, haven't been there in at least a decade. We lived in a town called Phelan, about 8 miles west of Victorville from 1989 to 2006. As I'd said I worked for San Bernardino county and would get calls out to Trona on occasion, 2 hours from our house just to get there!
My wife and I are starting to take aim at retirement and that's why I really enjoy your travel videos and the care you take to explain everything at the place you're taking videos of. In the late 80s and through the 90s we used to travel all over on Honda Gold Wing motorcycles, towed a fold out motorcycle tent trailer and took 2 of our kids with us. Been to Canada to back east on the yearly family trips. Still have one of the Gold Wings but now enjoy the comfort of our air conditioned chevy diesel and our full size trailer. Take care!

Beautiful, but very remote, I would want to be armed in some way. I look at some of the terrain and I keep thinking of Mad Max ~ Beyond Thunderdome.

I tried quite a few but this one supported 64bit and runs really well on my laptop. I have version X7 and will upgrade to X8 soon as it has a bunch of new features.

You got to the general area I used to live. And you drove near where we lived if you came up through Victorville on your way to Trona. I used to work for San Bernardino county and Trona is the northernmost city in the county, I was there many times to the city that was in the distance shot of the plant there. Did you get a whiff of the famous Trona smell? I too do not miss the heat of the area you talked about now that we're in North Idaho. Another great video! You've posted videos of several places we hope to travel to, alas, Trona is not one of them!
Joseph Brown Thanks :) Luckily I didn't didn't get to smell the famous Trona smell, what is it from?. We did pass through Victorville, seemed like a nice little town.
The smell is from the sulphur mines, which smell like rotten eggs.
What's interesting to consider is, if those tufas are anything like the tufas at Mono Lake, then they were under water at one time as the water bubbled up and deposited the calcium carbonates. That's a lot of water that's all gone now.
Williams Justin Yes, pretty cool. There are actually three sets of tufas there of different ages from three separate ice ages. The runoff from the Sierra Nevadas when the ice melted would form an inland sea.
Yes you pan too fast but when I pause it's very clear what camera set up are you using?

No freebies ;( They work well for me, very durable. I'm pretty rough with my cameras and they keep on ticking.
Another out of the way gem you've discovered. Is this BLM free camping or $$$? I can imagine that area is very dusty and hot when the wind kicks up. Looks like it was fairly calm. What's with the drums you heard? Looked like something weird going on way out in the desert? Calif. so anything is possible.....LOL Adding this one to my long list of places to check out. Thanks for the great video.
NWHiker Yup, it is free BLM camping. The drums turned out to be a couple young musicians filming a video for their band. :)

smacdiesel We'll spend the summer on Vancouver Island in BC and then when it gets too cold by November start making our way back down south again. Love exploring the south west, we have done it the last 3 years and still so much left to see. Cheers Ray

Do you have any GPS coordinates for the spot you camped? It would help if you gave them for all of your videos so your fans could find where you were.

Do you know if some safe target shooting is ok in this area, or have you seen anybody shooting up there?
Being that it's a conservation area I kind of doubt it but you could contact them.

I stayed in the area for several days, awesome mining sites about with the borax mines at the end of the valley. I have a 4x4 and camper set up for the roughs of British Colombia so the little desert was no problem. Carry everything I need - usually 40 litres of water, spare fuel etc. To answer a question posed by a viewer, yes, there are quite a few coyotes around but they don't pose a problem to adults.
