  • Patch was created by sampling the word "how" from the lead vocal into a Yamaha VSS-30. Recorded back into Pro Tools and dressed up with some reverb and SoundToys plugins.

Hey, I have a really important question:
I am thinking about buying the YAMAHA VSS30.
In the future im going to kinda travel arround the world and wont carry an external audio interface with me.
Is it still possible to record the sound from the VSS30 to Ableton for example? I will only carry arround my Laptop.

The VSS was designed long before USB MIDI, so you *will* still need a way to get audio from the VSS into your laptop. There are many portable USB-powered interfaces, such as the Apogee ONE, which I travel with.
It's also possible that some PCs still have 1/8" headphone inputs, in which case you could connect audio from the VSS directly to the laptop (Mac unfortunately did away with this around 2008).
If you're looking for a very portable setup, you might also explore some iPad recording apps. You'd still need an audio converter, but I've seen some quite portable iOS interfaces.

Hey! Thx for posting. I just bought a VSS-30. Had a couple of questions tho. 8th inch to 1/4 inch out to go to Pro Tools but should it be a mono or stereo 1/4 inch? I tried the stereo 1/4 inch plug and there was sooo much low end hum going into pro tools from the VSS-30. Have you experienced that? Also, to go from Pro Tools into the sample in I'm still confused on what chord to buy. TRS to RCA? But I've only seen stereo RCA (red and a white RCA, never just one RCA). Can you let me know what you used? Thanks so much!

Hey dude! Apologies for just seeing this now.
The VSS-30 has a mono 1/8" out. I've used a couple different cables, but a Y cable (stereo 1/8" to dual mono 1/4") has worked well and I only record one channel of the 1/4" outs.
Same thing on the way into the VSS-30- stereo TRS to dual RCA works well if you only send one channel into the VSS. Sometimes I'll hard pan it within Pro Tools to make sure max signal is going into the sampler.
Hope that helps- would love to see how you've been using it!
